Nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane-oxidiz- ing （n-damo） bacteria and anaerobic ammonia oxidizing （anammox） bacteria are two groups of microorganisms involved in global carbon and nitrogen cycling. In order to test whether the n-damo and anammox bacteria co-occur in natural saline environments, the DNA and cDNA samples obtained from the surficial sediments of two saline lakes （with salinity of 32 and 84 g/L, respectively） on the Tibetan Plateau were PCR-amplified with the use of anammox- and n-damo-specific primer sets, followed by clone library construction and phylogenetic analysis. DNA and cDNA- based clones affiliated with n-damo and anammox bacteria were successfully retrieved from the two samples, indicating that these two groups of bacteria can co-occur in natural saline environments with salinity as high as 84g/L. Our finding has great implications for our understanding of the global carbon and nitrogen cycle in nature.

This article presents the results of hydrochemical and hydrobiological studies of shallow saline lakes of the Borzya group(Zabaikalsky Krai, Russia) at the initial filling phase. The lake-margin ecosystems of the studied lakes are characterized by varying degrees of salinity from polyhaline to brine water. Cyclical variations of meteorological conditions and high salinity determined that the compositions of the aquatic organisms are specific, mostly between stenohaline and euryhaline species, the quantities are low, and the community structures are simple.

Inland waters are important sources of greenhouse gases(GHGs)to the atmosphere that may partially offset the terrestrial carbon ***,GHG emissions from high altitude saline lakes on the Tibetan Plateau are currently poorly *** this study,we measured methane(CH_(4))and carbon dioxide(CO_(2))concentrations and their carbon stable isotope(δ13C),and calculated diffusive water-to-air fluxes from two saline high-altitude lakes,Qinghai Lake and Hala Lake,located in northeast Tibetan Plateau in October *** two lakes were mostly supersaturated in CH_(4)(89.8%-4623.9%sat)and acted as sources of CH_(4) to the ***,more than 96%investigated area of Qinghai Lake and all investigated area of Hala Lake was a sink of CO_(2).The average diffusive fluxes of CH_(4) and CO_(2) in the surface waters of Qinghai Lake were 34.51μmol m−2 d−1 and−1.29 mmol m−2 d−1,while diffusive fluxes of CH_(4) and CO_(2) in Hala Lake averaged 5.48μmol m−2 d−1 and−5.24 mmol m−2 d−1,***(Sal),fluorescent dissolved organic matter(fDOM),temperature(Temp)and dissolved oxygen(DO)are key factors for diffusive CH_(4) and CO_(2) flux in Qinghai Lake and Hala ***_(4) diffusive fluxes across water-air interface from Qinghai Lake and Hala Lake were found to be significantly lower than other freshwater lakes,likely due to their saline nature.A simple isotope mixing model(Miller-Tans plots)revealed a distinctly different isotopic source values of CO_(2) and CH_(4) in Qinghai Lake and Hala *** CH_(4) production pathway of Qinghai Lake was mainly by the acetate fermentation,while that of Hala Lake was mainly by the CO_(2) *** results show that the continuous measurement can help capture the spatial variability of GHGs fluxes in saline lakes.

The spatiotemporal variability of lake partial carbon dioxide pressure(pCO_(2))introduces uncertainty into CO_(2)fluxestimates at the lakewater-air *** the variationpattern of pCO_(2)isimportant for obtaining accurate global *** we examine seasonal and trophic variations in lake pCO_(2)based on 13 field campaigns conducted in Chinese lakes from 2017 to *** found significant seasonal fluctuations in pCO_(2),with decreasing values as trophic states intensify within the same *** lakes exhibit lower pCO_(2)levels thanfreshwater *** pCO_(2)dynamics result invariable areal CO_(2)emissions,withlakes exhibiting different trophic states(oligotrophication>mesotrophication>eutrophication)and saline lakes differing from freshwater lakes(-23.1±17.4 vs.19.3±18.3 mmol m^(-2)d^(-1)).These spatiotemporal pCO_(2)variations complicate total CO_(2)emission *** area proportions of lakes with varying trophic states and salinity in China,we estimate China's lake CO_(2)flux at 8.07 Tg C yr^(-1).In future studies,the importance of accounting for lake salinity,seasonal dynamics,and trophic statesmust be noticed to enhance the accuracy of large-scale carbon emission estimates from lake ecosystems in the context of climate change.
