Current practice in autologous rib and costal-cartilage harvest for rhinoplasty:A systematic review

Background:Autologous costal grafts are used universally in clinical practice for rhinoplasty and ***,surgeons worldwide have not agreed on the details of graft harvesting,including rib selection,side preference,operation mode,cutting methods,and handling of the periosteum and *** study aimed to provide an overview of the novel techniques used for auto-rib harvesting in rhinoplasty within the past 5 years and identify potential avenues for future ***:We searched for related articles in PubMed,Embase,and Web of Science from 2019 to 2023,summa-rized crucial but controversial steps in recent practice,and analyzed their theoretical basis and clinical ***:Auto-rib and cartilage open harvest is still mainstream in rhinoplasty and reconstruction,with the 5th to 8th ribs and cartilage being the most *** laparoscopic harvest is gaining attention,being second only to the open harvest,with the 9th/10th ribs and cartilages being particularly *** clinical applications of full-cut and split-cut methods differ in their *** for some special reasons,almost all studies tended to preserve the periosteum and perichondrium in situ,and few surgeons chose to harvest the grafts on the left ***:Multiple techniques have emerged,requiring surgeons to balance the benefits and risks of various strategies at each *** theories and techniques should be fully tested promptly and in clinical practice before wide ***,a professional consensus is needed for better directivity,precision,and stability in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND Periosteal chondroma is a very rare benign tumor that develops adjacent to the cortical surface of bone and beneath the periosteal *** chondroma of the rib is an extremely rare *** SUMMARY The patient was a 43-year-old man who had been incidentally found to have a mediastinal mass 1 mo *** computed tomography showed a lobulated soft tissue mass on the right side of the T4/5 vertebra that measured about 47 mm×28 mm in the transverse view and contained diffuse stippled *** mass caused cortical scalloping of the right fourth rib and marginal bone *** computed tomography showed mild enhancement of the *** resonance imaging showed a lobulated mass on the right side of the thoracic vertebra with long TI and T2 signals,mottling,and patchy long T1 and short T2 signals *** lesion had a hypointense *** magnetic resonance imaging showed enhancement predominantly at the periphery of the *** tumor was approached through a right posterolateral thoracotomy,and parts of the fourth and fifth ribs were excised with the *** pathological analysis revealed periosteal chondroma of the *** Periosteal chondroma of the rib has a low incidence and typical imaging *** its imaging features is helpful to ensure a correct preoperative diagnosis.

rib stability: A way forward for safe coal extraction in India

Ensuring rib stability during pillar extraction is of prime importance in bord and pillar(B&P) method of underground coal mining with caving. rib stability has been assessed here by way of assessing factor of safety(FOS), a ratio of the strength of rib to stress on it. Earlier formulations for rib stability when applied to case studies gave very low FOS value suggesting significant ground control problems, which were contrary to the field observations. This has necessitated the need to revisit the concept of rib stability. The stress coming on the rib is estimated with the use of numerical modeling technique using the FLAC^(3D) software. The methodology of assessing rib-stability with the help of suggested rib-strength formulation has been validated at eight Indian coal mines. The outcome of this study finds relevance and importance in ensuring underground coal liquidation with improved safety and conservation.

Forming the transverse inner rib of a curved generatrix part through power spinning

How to form high-quality transverse inner ribs through power spinning is a key issue for complicated integrated curved generatrix parts with transverse inner ribs. In this study, the forming characteristics and laws during the power spinning process were investigated using a finite element simulation based on the orthogonal design method. The results show that the transverse inner rib distributes homogeneously along the circumferential direction but inhomogeneously along the generatrix direction. Depressions occur easily in the middle zone of the rib (MZR). The roller nose radius is the most significant parameter of the MZR underfill degree. A larger roller nose radius is helpful to decrease the MZR underfill degree. Furthermore, the preformed billet thickness also plays a vital role in the underfill degree of the front zone of the rib and the back zone of the rib, as well as the depression degree of the outer surface of the rib. By combining the ribfilling characteristics and laws, the optimized forming process window for obtaining high-quality inner ribs was obtained by regression analysis, thus laying a basis for improving the forming quality of curved generatrix parts with transverse inner ribs in power spinning.

Underground coal mines use mechanical bolts in addition to other types of bolts to control the rib deformation and to stabilize the yielded coal *** research has been conducted to understand the performance of the mechanical bolts in coal *** from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH)conducted this work to understand the loading characteristics of mechanical bolts(stiffness and capacity)installed in coal ribs at five underground coal *** pull-out tests were performed in this study to define the loading characteristics of mechanical rib *** installation torques were applied to the tested bolts based on the strength of the coal seam.A typical tri-linear load-deformation response for mechanical bolts was obtained from these *** was found that the anchorage capacity depended mainly on the coal *** for modeling mechanical bolts have been developed using the tri-linear load-deformation *** outcome of this research provides essential data for rib support design.

Mechanics of rib deformation—Observations and monitoring in Australian coal mines

The risk of fatalities from rib failure is still prevalent in the coal mining industry. This risk has prompted further research to be conducted on rib deformation in order to understand the mechanisms of rib failure,with the long-term objective being to improve rib support design. This paper presents the results of ACARP research project C25057, which investigated the mechanics and drivers of rib failure. The results of rib deformation monitoring at three different mines in Australia provide rib deformation characteristics for overburden depths ranging from 160 to 530 m. Monitoring includes deformation during development drivage conditions and during the longwall retreat abutment stress environment. The rib deformation monitoring covered three different seams: the Goonyella Middle Seam, Ulan Seam, and Bulli Seam in the Bowen Basin, Western Coalfield, and Southern Coalfield, respectively. The observed mechanisms driving the rib deformation ranged from bedding shear failure along weak claystone bands to vertical shear fractures to kinematic failures driven by shear failure dilation. The variation in mechanisms of rib failure, together with the seemingly consistent method of rib support design, prompts the question: what exactly is the role of rib support?

Effects of rib on cooling performance of photovoltaic modules(PV/PCM-rib)

Increasing the temperature of photovoltaic systems reduces electrical efficiency,output power,as well as results in permanent damages in the long-term run.A new hybrid PV/PCM-rib system with three different rib pitch ratios of Λ =4,Λ =2 and Λ =1 is investigated to reduce PV temperature and achieve uniform temperature distribution.A comprehensive two-dimensional model of the systems is developed and simulated with a fixed inclination angle of 30°.A parametric study is carried out to investigate the impact of ribs on different melting temperatures(50,40 and 30 ℃).According to the numerical results and the parametric analysis,using ribs shows better performance in temperature reduction for PCM with a lower melting *** lowering the melting temperature of PCM from 50 to 30 ℃,the average temperature reduction of PV/PCM-rib in the case of Λ =1 increases from 1.39% to 5.16% while the average melted PCM decreases from 20.5% to 7.59% after 240 *** means that using ribs provides more solid *** is also obtained that the electrical efficiency and output power show more increments at lower melting temperatures.
