Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved degradation pathway in eukaryotes;it plays a critical role in nutritional stress tolerance.The circadian clock is an endogenous timekeeping system that generates biological rhythms to adapt to daily changes in the environment.Accumulating evidence indicates that the circadian clock and autophagy are intimately interwoven in animals.However,the role of the circadian clock in regulating autophagy has been poorly elucidated in plants.Here,we show that autophagy exhibits a robust circadian rhythm in both light/dark cycle(LD)and in constant light(LL)in Arabidopsis.However,autophagy rhythm showed a different pattem with a phase-advance shift and a lower amplitude in LL compared to LD.Moreover,mutation of the transcription factor LUX ARrhythmO(LUX)removed autophagy rhythm in LL and led to an enhanced amplitude in LD.LUX represses expression of the core autophagy genes ATG2,ATG8 a,and ATG11 by directly binding to their promoters.Phenotypic analysis revealed that LUX is responsible for improved resistance of plants to carbon starvation,which is dependent on moderate autophagy activity.Comprehensive transcriptomic analysis revealed that the autophagy rhythm is ubiquitous in plants.Taken together,our findings demonstrate that the LUXmediated circadian clock regulates plant autophagy rhythms.

Photoacoustic treatment mitigates cognitive dysfunction in a model of sleep-wake rhythm disturbance

Sleep-wake rhythm disturbances,which are characterized by abnormal sleep timing or duration,are associated with cognitive dysfunction.Photoacoustic treatments including light and sound stimulation have been found to be effective in modulating sleep patterns and improving cognitive behavior in abnormal sleep-wake pattern experiments.In this study,we examined whether light and sound interventions could reduce sleep-wake pattern disturbances and memory deficits in a sleep rhythm disturbance model.We established a model of sleep rhythm disturbance in C57 BL/6 J mice via a sleep deprivation method involving manual cage tapping,cage jostling,and nest disturbance.We used a Mini Mitter radio transmitter device to monitor motor activity in the mice and fear conditioning tests to assess cognitive function.Our results indicated that an intervention in which the mice were exposed to blue light(40-Hz flickering frequency)for 1 hour during their subjective daytime significantly improved the 24-hour-acrophase shift and reduced the degree of memory deficit induced by sleep deprivation.However,interventions in which the mice were exposed to a 40-Hz blue light at offset time or subjective night time points,as well as 2 Hz-blue light at 3 intervention time points(subjective day time,subjective night time,and offset time points),had no positive effects on circadian rhythm shift or memory deficits.Additionally,a 2000-Hz sound intervention during subjective day time attenuated the24-hour-acrophase shift and memory decline,while 440-Hz and 4000-Hz sounds had no effect on circadian rhythms.Overall,these results demonstrate that photoacoustic treatment effectively corrected abnormal sleep-wake patterns and cognitive dysfunction associated with sleep-deprivation-induced disturbances in sleep-wake rhythm.All animal experiments were approved by the Experimental Animal Ethics Committee of Drum Tower Hospital Affiliated to the Medical College of Nanjing University,China(approval No.20171102)on November20,2017.

Vocal individuality and rhythm in male and female duet contributions of a nonhuman primate

Duetting,or the stereotypical,repeated and often coordinated vocalizations between 2 individuals arose independently multiple times in the Order Primates.Across primate species,there exists substantial variation in terms of timing,degree of overlap,and sex-specificity of duet contributions.There is increasing evidence that primates can modify the timing of their duet contributions relative to their partner,and this vocal flexibility may have been an important precursor to the evolution of human language.Here,we present the results of a fine-scale analysis of Gursky’s spectral tarsier Tarsius spectrumgurskyae duet phrases recorded in North Sulawesi,Indonesia.Specifically,we aimed to investigate individual-level variation in the female and male contributions to the duet,quantify individual-and pair-level differences in duet timing,and measure temporal precision of duetting individuals relative to their partner.We were able to classify female duet phrases to the correct individual with an 80%accuracy using support vector machines,whereas our classification accuracy for males was lower at 64%.Females were more variable than males in terms of timing between notes.All tarsier phrases exhibited some degree of overlap between callers,and tarsiers exhibited high temporal precision in their note output relative to their partners.We provide evidence that duetting tarsier individuals can modify their note output relative to their duetting partner,and these results support the idea that flexibility in vocal exchanges—a precursor to human language—evolved early in the primate lineage and long before the emergence of modern humans.

Dear Editors,Autism spectrum disorder is a highly heritable neurodevel-opmental disorder and is often associated with sleep disorders and dysregulation of the circadian rhythm[1,2].Whether neural circuits governing the circadian rhythm are causally associated with social behaviors remains to be determined.In this work,we used mice with MECP2 duplication as a model of autism to investigate whether regulation of the circadian rhythm is connected to social behaviors.

Analysis of a phase synchronized functional network based on the rhythm of brain activities

rhythm of brain activities represents oscillations of postsynaptic potentials in neocortex, therefore it can serve as an indicator of the brain activity state. In order to check the connectivity of brain rhythm, this paper develops a new method of constructing functional network based on phase synchronization. Electroencephalogram （EEG） data were collected while subjects looking at a green cross in two states, performing an attention task and relaxing with eyes-open. The EEG from these two states was filtered by three band-pass filters to obtain signals of theta （4-7 Hz）, alpha （8-13 Hz） and beta （14-30 Hz） bands. Mean resultant length was used to estimate strength of phase synchronization in three bands to construct networks of both states, and mean degree K and cluster coefficient C of networks were calculated as a function of threshold. The result shows higher cluster coetticient in the attention state than in the eyes-open state in all three bands, suggesting that cluster coefficient reflects brain state. In addition, an obvious fronto-parietal network is found in the attention state, which is a well-known attention network. These results indicate that attention modulates the fronto-parietal connectivity in different modes as compared with the eyes-open state. Taken together this method is an objective and important tool to study the properties of neural networks of brain rhythm,

Phenomenology of rhythm in design

rhythm in design, as explored in this research, is proposed to be the result of cognitive performance generated stylistically by creators and recognized consciously by beholders. This study describes the phenomenon of rhythm; how it is created; the factors that comprise rhythm; the types of rhythms created by human cognition of repetition, and why repetition is recognized as a part of human cognition. Images of seven buildings designed by Alvar Aalto are used to demonstrate the creation and expression of rhythm in building compositions. Evidence gathered in this research explains that rhythm in design is a result of the design method consciously applied by human cognition of repetition. Rules of generating the phenomena of rhythm are also summarized. Designers could apply these rules to generate harmonious patterns through the effective usage of repetition. In sum, rhythm is ingrained in the human conscience and therefore should be a key component of design applied universally.

Interaction between Seizure and Theta rhythm

Recently it was shown by us that combined stimulation of hippocampus and dorsomedial hypothalamus resulted in suppression of the electroencephalographic seizure reactions and, respectively, manifestations of behavioral seizures reduced. It is expected, that augmentation of inhibitory processes in hippocampal neurons in the course of dorsomedial hypothalamus stimulation can trigger mechanisms preventing the development of epileptiform activity. Because of two important characteristics of the hippocampus—theta rhythm and epileptogenesis—these appear to be interrelated in respect of their cellular substrates, and as far as theta rhythm may modulate hippocampal excitability, a study of the functional relationship between theta rhythm and seizure activity was endeavored. The purpose of this study is to test this proposal by determining the effects on seizures of induction or suppression of hippocampal theta activity. Our findings show that: 1) against background of strong unusual sound stimulation (in our case-sound) blockade of local seizure reactions induced by hippocampal stimulation occurred;2) the frequency of hippocampal interictal epileptiform dischargers increased with the transition from the awake state to drowsiness and a slow-wave sleep phase. After the animal came from slow-wave sleep to paradoxical sleep, epileptiform activity completely disappeared;3) at threshold stimulation of hypothalamus when electrohippocampogram shows augmentation of the theta rhythm there is a significant reduction of seizure durations. When at hypothalamus stimulation instead of theta rhythm the electrical activity is desynchronized, there occurs a considerable intensification of seizure activity. Therefore, seizure-theta antagonism in our experiments could be interpreted as an adjustment of the inhibitory mechanisms when the theta rhythm is evoked.

Mating behavior and sex pheromone release rhythm of Holotrichia parallela(Coleoptera: Melolonthidae)

Mating behavior and sex pheromone release rhythm of Holotrichia parallela was studied in this research. The maximum mating times were 3 for female and 4 for male. Average mating times were 1.06 for female and 0.91 for male. L-isoleucine methyl ester(LIME), a major component of pheromone, increased gradually from 14:00 and peaked at 19:00, then dropped sharply at 20:00 and remained low at 24:00.(R)-(-)-linalool(referred as linalool below) maintained similar levels throughout the study period. Calling and mating activity significantly decreased LIME titer, but not linalool. Analyses of 11 samples collected during calling days(20 d-70 d) revealed that LIME production was affected by female age. LIME titers increased from 20 d to 45 d, and decreased from 45 d to 70 d. While linalool titers remained at similar levels at all sampling dates. The highest ratio between LIME and linalool was 12 and the lowest was 4. Field tests confirmed that the most attractive ratios of LIME: linalool in early season(June 1 to 20) and late season(August 1 to 20) were 6:1, while in the most serious injury stage(June 20 to August 1) was 12:1. This is the first report about circadian rhythmicity of sex pheromone in Holotrichia parallela, which provides a basis for controlling it in field.

Broad interpretation of the rhythm is "the rhythm of movement," all co-ordination, balance in motion can be called rhythm. In logo design, the formal beauty of signs is an important factor in information transmission, so it naturally aroused great attention of graphic designers. The gradient and repeat of the point, the line’s length, intensity changes, and rhythmic arrangement of surface in computer logo design, brings a strong visual effect to logo, the picture has a sense of rhythm and unity. These signs are usually make the screen has a sense of movement and forms more abundant, the transition of each visual element more beautiful, harmonization and coordination. The rhythm of computer logo design roughly can be divided into: the rhythm of repetition, the rhythm of movement, etc. major parts. In this paper, starting from the definition of rhythm, analyzing the use of the rhythm of repetition, the rhythm of the gradient , rhythm and dynamic in computer logo design to analyze the characteristics of these signs’ rhythm, and then I put forward the development trends of computer logo design in the future .
