Soils constitute one of the most critical natural resources and maintaining their health is vital for agricultural development and ecological sustainability,providing many essential ecosystem services.Driven by climatic variations and anthropogenic activities,soil degradation has become a global issue that seriously threatens the ecological environment and food security.remote sensing(RS)technologies have been widely used to investigate soil degradation as it is highly efficient,time-saving,and broad-scope.This review encompasses recent advances and the state-of-the-art of ground,proximal,and novel Rs techniques in soil degradation-related studies.We reviewed the RS-related indicators that could be used for monitoring soil degradation-related properties.The direct indicators(mineral composition,organic matter,surface roughness,and moisture content of soil)and indirect proxies(vegetation condition and land use/land cover change)for evaluating soil degradation were comprehensively summarized.The results suggest that these above indicators are effective for monitoring soil degradation,however,no indicators system has been established for soil degradation monitoring to date.We also discussed the RS's mechanisms,data,and methods for identifying specific soil degradation-related phenomena(e.g.,soil erosion,salinization,desertification,and contamination).We investigated the potential relations between soil degradation and Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)and also discussed the challenges and prospective use of RS for assessing soil degradation.To further advance and optimize technology,analysis and retrieval methods,we identify critical future research needs and directions:(1)multi-scale analysis of soil degradation;(2)availability of RS data;(3)soil degradation process modelling and prediction;(4)shared soil degradation dataset;(5)decision support systems;and(6)rehabilitation of degraded soil resource and the contribution of RS technology.Because it is difficult to monitor or measure all soil properties in the large

Internal solitary waves(ISWs)are common mesoscale dynamic processes in the ocean that are spread throughout the world’s oceans.The South China Sea(SCS),Western Pacific(WPAC)and Indian Ocean(EIND)(SCS-WPACEIND)are areas where ISWs frequently occur.In particular,in the northern part of the South China Sea,Sulu Sea,Celebes Sea,Andaman Sea,Lombok Strait and northeastern part of Taiwan Island,ISWs exist almost year-round.remote sensing is an important technique to carry out investigations and research on ISWs on a large scale.In particular,optical sensors represented by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS)can observe ISWs for a long time and on a large scale,while SAR sensors such as Sentinel-1 A/B can compensate for the deficiencies in optical sensors and comprehensively observe ISWs.Based on many years of remote sensing surveys of ISWs,this paper uses MODIS and Sentinel-1 satellite remote sensing images of more than 70000 scenes from 2010 to 2020 to carry out survey studies of ISWs in the SCS-WPAC-EIND.The survey systematically gives the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of ISWs in the SCS-WPAC-EIND and focuses on the analysis of the ISW characteristics in main areas in the SCS-WPAC-EIND,thereby providing basic data for further research on ISWs.

The Internet of Things(IoT)offers a new era of connectivity,which goes beyond laptops and smart connected devices for connected vehicles,smart homes,smart cities,and connected healthcare.The massive quantity of data gathered from numerous IoT devices poses security and privacy concerns for users.With the increasing use of multimedia in communications,the content security of remote-sensing images attracted much attention in academia and industry.Image encryption is important for securing remote sensing images in the IoT environment.Recently,researchers have introduced plenty of algorithms for encrypting images.This study introduces an Improved Sine Cosine Algorithm with Chaotic Encryption based remote sensing Image Encryption(ISCACE-RSI)technique in IoT Environment.The proposed model follows a three-stage process,namely pre-processing,encryption,and optimal key generation.The remote sensing images were preprocessed at the initial stage to enhance the image quality.Next,the ISCACERSI technique exploits the double-layer remote sensing image encryption(DLRSIE)algorithm for encrypting the images.The DLRSIE methodology incorporates the design of Chaotic Maps and deoxyribonucleic acid(DNA)Strand Displacement(DNASD)approach.The chaotic map is employed for generating pseudorandom sequences and implementing routine scrambling and diffusion processes on the plaintext images.Then,the study presents three DNASD-related encryption rules based on the variety of DNASD,and those rules are applied for encrypting the images at the DNA sequence level.For an optimal key generation of the DLRSIE technique,the ISCA is applied with an objective function of the maximization of peak signal to noise ratio(PSNR).To examine the performance of the ISCACE-RSI model,a detailed set of simulations were conducted.The comparative study reported the better performance of the ISCACE-RSI model over other existing approaches.

Reliable estimation of region-wide rice yield is vital for food security and agricultural management.Field-scale models have increased our understanding of rice yield and its estimation under theoretical environmental conditions.However,they offer little infor-mation on spatial variability effects on farm-scale yield.remote sensing(RS)is a useful tool to upscale yield estimates from farm scales to regional levels.Much research used RS with rice models for reliable yield estimation.As several countries start to operatio-nalize rice monitoring systems,it is needed to synthesize current literature to identify knowledge gaps,to improve estimation accuracies,and to optimize processing.This paper critically reviewed significant developments in using geospatial methods,imagery,and quantitative models to estimate rice yield.First,essential characteristics of rice were discussed as detected by optical and radar sensors,band selection,sensor configuration,spatial resolution,mapping methods,and biophysical variables of rice derivable from RS data.Second,various empirical,process-based,and semi-empirical models that used RS data for spatial estimation of yield were critically assessed-discussing how major types of models,RS platforms,data assimilation algorithms,canopy state variables,and RS variables can be integrated for yield estimation.Lastly,to overcome current constraints and to improve accuracies,several possibilities were suggested-adding new modeling modules,using alternative canopy variables,and adopting novel modeling approaches.As rice yields are expected to decrease due to global warming,geospatial rice yield estimation techniques are indispensable tools for climate change assessments.Future studies should focus on resolving the current limitations of estimation by precise delineation of rice cultivars,by incorporating dynamic harvesting indices based on climatic drivers,using innovative modeling approaches with machine learning.

The degradation of agricultural terraces is considered a major challenge to soil and water conservation in steep-slope viticulture.Although terracing is a widespread conservation practice,its sustainability is threatened by adverse climatic and man-made conditions.Previous studies have shown the impact of terrace designs on the formation of runoff pathways,causing degradation processes on terrace platforms(e.***.sheet erosion)and walls(e.***.piping,landslides,collapse).This study evaluates a remote sensing versus a field-based approach to monitor hydrological processes responsible for terrace degradation,as tested in a north-Italian vineyard.The field-based approach was based on spatially measured Soil Moisture Content(SMC)using a Time Domain Reflectometry(TDR)instrument,which clearly revealed saturation hotspots around two damaged terraces in the study area.Moreover,these zones showed a particular cross-sectional SMC profile,with the highest saturation close to the terrace platform edges.The remote sensing approach was based on aerial imagery acquired by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV)and photogrammetric reconstruction of the vineyard geomorphology,allowing terrain-based analysis and physical erosion modelling.In this approach,simulations indicated that terrace damages could be partly explained by the formation of preferential runoff pathways caused by the terrace design.This parallel methodology allowed a comparison of the merits and limitations of either approach,as done in light of published work.The occurrence of two SMC hotspots at terrace edges(and their non-typical cross-sectional profiles)could be better understood from simulated surface flow paths.While the causal relationship between heterogeneous soil saturation and terrace instability has been previously reported in literature,the novelty of the presented study is the use of topsoil SMC as an indicator of potential damages,favouring the scalability compared to fixed,local and often intrusive terrace sub-surface ex-periments.remote sensing based approache

Untethered micro/nanorobots that can wirelessly control their motion and deformation state have gained enormous interest in remote sensing applications due to their unique motion characteristics in various media and diverse functionalities.Researchers are developing micro/nanorobots as innovative tools to improve sensing performance and miniaturize sensing systems,enabling in situ detection of substances that traditional sensing methods struggle to achieve.Over the past decade of development,significant research progress has been made in designing sensing strategies based on micro/nanorobots,employing various coordinated control and sensing approaches.This review summarizes the latest developments on micro/nanorobots for remote sensing applications by utilizing the self-generated signals of the robots,robot behavior,microrobotic manipulation,and robot-environment interactions.Providing recent studies and relevant applications in remote sensing,we also discuss the challenges and future perspectives facing micro/nanorobots-based intelligent sensing platforms to achieve sensing in complex environments,translating lab research achievements into widespread real applications.

Building a more resilient food system for sustainable development and reducing uncertainty in global food markets both require concurrent and near-real-time and reliable crop information for decision making.Satellite-driven crop monitoring has become a main method to derive crop information at local, regional,and global scales by revealing the spatial and temporal dimensions of crop growth status and production.However, there is a lack of quantitative, objective, and robust methods to ensure the reliability of crop information, which reduces the applicability of crop monitoring and leads to uncertain and undesirable consequences. In this paper, we review recent progress in crop monitoring and identify the challenges and opportunities in future efforts. We find that satellite-derived metrics do not fully capture determinants of crop production and do not quantitatively interpret crop growth status; the later can be advanced by integrating effective satellite-derived metrics and new onboard sensors. We have identified that ground data accessibility and the negative effects of knowledge-based analyses are two essential issues in crop monitoring that reduce the applicability of crop monitoring for decisions on food security. Crowdsourcing is one solution to overcome the restrictions of ground-truth data accessibility. We argue that user participation in the complete process of crop monitoring could improve the reliability of crop information.Encouraging users to obtain crop information from multiple sources could prevent unconscious biases.Finally, there is a need to avoid conflicts of interest in publishing publicly available crop information.

The Earth’s climate is largely determined by its energy budget.Since the 1960s,satellite remote sensing has been used in estimating these energy budget components at both the top of the atmosphere(TOA)and the surface.Besides the broadband sensors that have been traditionally used for monitoring Earth’s Energy Budget(EEB),data from a variety of narrowband sensors aboard both polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites have also been extensively employed to estimate the EEB components.This paper provides a comprehensive review of the satellite missions,state-of-the art estimation algorithms and the satellite products,and also synthesizes current understanding of the EEB and spatiotemporal variations.The TOA components include total solar irradiance,reflected shortwave radiation/planetary albedo,outgoing longwave radiation,and energy imbalance.The surface components include incident solar radiation,shortwave albedo,shortwave net radiation,longwave downward and upwelling radiation,land and sea surface temperature,surface emissivity,all-wave net radiation,and sensible and latent heat fluxes.Some challenges,and outlook such as virtual constellation of different satellite sensors,temporal homogeneity tests of long time-series products,algorithms ensemble,and products intercomparison are also discussed.

Livability assessment of 101,630 communities in China's major cities: A remote sensing perspective

Some of China's major cities have entered the middle and late stages of urbanization, and the development focus of these cities has gradually shifted from outward expansion to inward renewal. The community, as the basic unit of a city, is undoubtedly the main object of urban renewal. In order to efficiently and effectively address the problems in current community construction, it is necessary to conduct a large-scale in-depth assessment of the community livability, which can directly imply the satisfaction of residents with their quality of life. This study achieved the first comprehensive livability assessment at the individual community scale for 42 major cities of China from the perspective of remotely sensed and crowd-sourced geographic information. Specifically, we produced abundant fine-grained datasets for 42 cities, including high-resolution land cover maps interpreted from Ziyuan-3 satellites(ZY-3, 2.1 m), building height, point-of-interest, and boundaries of 101,630 communities.As designed in our proposed framework, the community livability was evaluated by 5 level-1 indicators, 27 level-2 indicators and an integrated community livability index(CLI). A number of interesting findings were obtained from this assessment:(1)According to the expert questionnaires, living comfort was considered as the most important livability factor for residents with the highest weight, while the building environment was rated the least. The negative factors(e.g., the factories around the community) impacted more on livability than the positive ones.(2) Most communities in major Chinese cities were characterized by dense buildings and sparse green spaces.(3) In these cities, community security construction was severely insufficient,particularly in less developed regions.(4) Imbalanced community livability development was prevalent across cities, and simultaneously, the CLI distribution within cities also exhibited significant spatial aggregation and heterogeneity. This paper aims to demonstrate results and considerations regarding the use of remote sensing big data for archaeological and Cultural Heritage management large scale applications.For this purpose,the Earth Engine©developed by Google©was exploited.Earth Engine©provides a robust and expandable cloud platform where several freely distributed remote sensing big data,such as Landsat,can be accessed,analysed and visualized.Two different applications are presented here as follows:the first one is based on the evaluation of multi-temporal Landsat series datasets for the detection of buried Neolithic tells(‘magoules’)in the area of Thessaly,in Greece using linear orthogonal equations.The second case exploits European scale multi-temporal DMSP-OLS Nighttime Lights Time Series to visualize the impact of urban sprawl in the vicinity of UNESCO World Heritage sites and monuments.Both applications highlight the considerable opportunities that big data can offer to the fields of archaeology and Cultural Heritage,while the studies also demonstrate the great challenges that still are needed to be overcome in order to make the exploitation of big data process manageable and fruitful for future applications.
