A base population of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum was produced by mass spawning from a wild *** rearing for one year,selection for shell length growth was undertaken to determine the possibility of genetic *** the same selection intensity of±1.755 in upward and downward directions,three gene lines,including two selected lines and one non-selected control line,were created,which were reared under the same environmental conditions for each *** of SR and hR were evident between the upward-selected and downward-selected *** average,the standardized responses to selection (SR) and realized heritability(hR) were as follows:0.639 and 0.364,respectively,for the upward-selected line and 0.564 and 0.322,respectively,for the downward-selected *** significant differences(P > 0.05) in SR and hR were however detected between the upward- and downward-selected *** in terms of shell length improved by 5.41%in the upward-selected line after one generation,suggesting that mass selection for growth in a cultured population of the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum is effective.

Responses to two-way selection on growth in mass-spawned F_1 progeny of Argopecten irradians concentricus(Say)

In the present study, the effect of one-generation divergent selection on the growth and survival of the bay scallop （Argopecten irradians concentricus） was examined to evaluate the efficacy of a selection program currently being carried out in Beibu Bay in the South China Sea. A total of 146 adult scallops were randomly selected from the same cultured population ofA. i. concentricus, and divided into two groups in shell length （anterior-posterior measurement）： large （4.91-6.02 cm, n=74） and small （3.31-4.18 cm, n=72）. At the same time, a control group was also randomly sampled （4.21-4.88 cm, n=80）. Mass-spawned F1 progenies from the three size groups were obtained and reared under identical conditions at all growth phases. The effects of two-way （or upward-downward） selection on fertilization rate, hatching rate, survival rate, daily growth in shell length and body weight were assessed in the three size groups. Results show that significant differences （P〈0.01） were found in hatching rate, survival rate and daily growth of F~ progenies, but not in fertilization rate （P〉0.05）, among the three groups. The hatching rate, survival rate and daily growth of the progeny of large-sized parents were greater than those of the control group （P〈0.05）, which in turn were larger than those of small-sized group （P〈0.05）. Responses to selection by shell length and body weight were 0.32±0.04 cm and 2.18±0.05 g, respectively, for the upward selection, and -0.14±0.03 cm and -2.77±0.06 g, respectively, for the downward selection. The realized heritability estimates of shell length and body weight were 0.38±0.06 cm and 0.22±0.07 g for the upward selection, and 0.24±0.06 cm and 0.37±0.09 g for the downward selection, respectively. The change in growth by bidirectional selection suggests that high genetic variation may be present in the cultured bay scallop population in China.

Selection for growth performance of tank-reared Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei

Seven growth-related traits were measured to assess the selection response and genetic parameters of the growth of Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, which had been domesticated in tanks for more than four generations. Phenotypic and genetic parameters were evaluated and fitted to an animal model. realized response was measured from the difference between the mean growth rates of selected and control families. realized heritability was determined from the ratio of the selection responses and selection differentials. The animal model heritability estimate over generations was 0.44±0.09 for body weight (BW), and ranged from 0.21±0.08 to 0.37±0.06 for size traits. Genetic correlations of phenotypic traits were more variable (0.51-0.97), although correlations among various traits were high (>0.83). Across generations, BW and size traits increased, while selection response and heritability gradually decreased. Selection responses were 12.28%-23.35% for harvest weight and 3.58%-13.53% for size traits. heritability estimates ranged from 0.34±0.09 to 0.48±0.15 for harvest weight and 0.17±0.01-0.38±0.11 for size traits. All phenotypic and genetic parameters differed between various treatments. To conclude, the results demonstrated a potential for mass selection of growth traits in L. vannamei. A breeding scheme could use this information to integrate the effectiveness constituent traits into an index to achieve genetic progress.

One hundred and twenty randomly selected adult individuals from the same *** concentricus cultured population were divided into 3 groups according to shell length:large group(shell length 4.91-6.02 cm,5.40±0.28,n=33),middle group(shell length 4.21-4.88 cm,4.50±0.18,n=49)and small group(3.31-4.18 cm,3.93±0.19,n=38),then mixed spawning was carried *** mix-spawned F progeny of these 3 groups were cultured under the same condition. The effect of parental selection on the growth performance of mix-spawned progeny was examined between three size groups through comparisons of egg number,fertilization rate,hatching rate,juvenile survival rate,survival rates over the nursing,grow-out and reproductive periods,daily growth of shell length and shell height and body weight,aiming at assaying the effect of parental selection on the reproductive, growth and survival performances of mix-spawned F progeny,and in turn providing some scientific reference for the selective breeding of the *** showed that for fertilization rate there were no significant difference between three groups(P>0.05).In terms of other indices as above, F progeny of large-size parents were larger than middle ones(P<0.05);those of middle-size parents were superior to small-size ones(P<0.05).Responses to selection of shell height,shell length and wet weight were 2.0 ram,2.3 mm and 2.36 g respectively for progeny of large-size parents;-1.4 cm,-0.9 cm and -1.82 g respectively for progeny of middle-size parents,and -3.6 cm,-3.3 cm and -4.19 g respectively for progeny of small-size *** heritabilities of shell height,shell length and body weight were 0.253,0.274 and 0.202 respectively for F population of large-size *** directional parental selection for *** concentricus improved the growth and anti-adversity performance of mix-spawned progeny,showing that higher genetic variation was embraced in present cultured populations of *** concentricus in Beibu bay

We initiated a selective breeding program to improve the growth rate of manila clam since 2007, and a full-sib family with orange shell color was selected. This family features high survival but slow growth. Thereafter, two generations of mass selection were conducted in this familyby 10% upward selection for faster growth. In 2011, three types of lines were produced by selecting the breeder from second-generation selected line. They are SS（subject to three generations of selection for growth in shell length）, SC（selected for the second but not the third generation）, and C（randomly sampled individuals from national population）. The results show that the shell length of the SS line was significantly larger than these of the SC and C lines at any stages（P＜0.05）. The genetic parameters of the shell length were, respectively, hR2（realized heritability）: 0.42, SR（response to selection）: 0.73, GG（genetic gain）: 6.66 for larval stage;hR2:0.40, SR: 0.69, GG: 21.76 for juvenile stage;hR2: 0.48, SR: 0.83;GG: 18.22 for grow-out stage. There are no inbreeding depressions in shell length observed in the SS and SC lines at all sampling days. All of the results indicate that maintaining selection pressure in successive generation may be effective in the selective breeding program of this family.
