Assessing the Impacts of Summer range on Bathurst Caribou’s Productivity and Abundance since 1985

Barren ground caribou are one of the most important natural resources for northern aboriginal peoples in Canada, and their responsible management has been identified as a top priority by northern communities and governments. This study is aimed to assess the impacts of summer range forage availability and quality on Bathurst caribou’s productivity and abundance. Despite well documented effects of habitat nutrition on individual animal, few studies have been able to link nutrition and population demographics in a quantitative fashion, probably because caribou productivity and abundance could be potentially affected by many factors (e.g., habitat, harvest, predators, diseases/parasites, extreme weather, climate change, industrial development, and pollution), and yet long-term data for many of these factors are not available. By determining the upper envelope curve between summer range indicators and caribou productivity, this study made such assessment possible. Our results indicate that summer range indicators derived from long-term remote sensing time series and climate records can explain 59% of the variation in late-winter calf:cow ratio during 1985 and 2012. As a measure of caribounet productvitiy, the late-winter calf:cow ratio, together with the mortality rate, in turn determined population dynamics.

Study on the Effective range of Local Ventilation in the Driving Face of Single Head Roadway

The traditional research considers that the effective range of forced local ventilation in single head tunnel is the horizontal distance from the jet exit section to the rotary section, but there is a low wind speed area at the end of the range which can not completely and effectively release toxic and harmful gases. In this area, due to the small jet energy, there is no way to effectively remove the toxic and harmful gases produced in the driving process, which seriously affects the safety of the mine.?Therefore, the reasonable definition of the effective range of the forced local ventilation of the single head tunnel can not only improve the theory of the local ventilation of the mine, but also prevent the accumulation of gas and ensure the life safety of the employees. In this paper, the definition of effective range of local ventilation in single head heading face is put forward, and the rationality of the definition of effective range is verified by numerical simulation. On the basis of reasonable definition of effective range, the relationship between wind speed and effective range under different ventilation modes is studied by numerical simulation. The results show that when the wind speed at the outlet of the air duct is less than 20 m/s, the effective range changes rapidly with the outlet wind speed, and after more than 20 m/s, the effect of wind speed on the effective range is gradually weakened. Under the same exit wind speed, the effective range of parallel and coplanar air inlet is much greater than that of single air inlet.

Improvement of High Dynamic range Capacitive Displacement Sensor by a Globalm Planarization

This study presents an improvement of high dynamic range contact-type capacitive displacement sensor by applying planarization. The sensor is called the contact-type linear encoder-like capacitive displacement sensor (CLECDiS), is a nano-meter-resolution sensor with a wide dynamic range. However, height differences due to patterned electrodes may cause a variety of problems or performance degradation. In devices of two glass wafer surfaces with patterned structures assembled face-to-face and in sliding contact, the heights of the patterns crucially affect their performance and practicality, so it should be planarized for reducing the problem. A number of techniques for planarizing glass wafer surfaces with patterned chrome electrodes were evaluated and the following three were selected as adequate: lift-off, etch-back, and chemical mechanical polishing (CMP). The fabricated samples showed that CMP provided the best planarization. CMP was successfully employed to produce CLECDiS with improved signal reliability due to reduced collisions between electrodes.

Exploratory Potential for Gold Placer Deposits in the Coastal range, BioBío Region, South-Central Chile

Many gold placers located in the Coastal range of south-central Chile have been exploited commercially during the past decades;nevertheless and until now, there are not any exploration studies of these placers and their basement. In order to provide an overview of exploratory potential, the stream sediments that are part of several gold placers in the northwest area of the BioBío region are analyzed, which have been registered on the basis of empirical evidence from artisanal mining activities. The overview consists of two goals: 1) determine the presence of auriferous occurrences (stream sediments and basement) and 2) identify potentially favorable areas to find gold placer deposits. Through optical microscopy this study characterized the metallic and non-metallic mineralogy of the basement, along with geochemical analyses of stream sediments and surrounding rocks of the placer deposits. The geochemical results show two sectors with high precious metal contents in sediments (up to 24 ppm of Au and 8 ppm of Ag) and two rocky outcrops with Au (757 and 41 ppb). Additionally, there are depressions in the study area that have received large amounts of sediments (reaching up to 170 m-thick), which are favorable places for the accumulation of auriferous sediments from nearby valleys due to the tectonic and structural conditions where they are located. Then, these results show an exploratory potential for gold placers and can be useful to delineate future exploration strategies in the Coastal range of south-central Chile.

Ougenioxylon chinjiensis sp. nov., a New Fossil Species of the Family Leguminosae from Chinji Formation Salt range, Punjab Pakistan

This work is comprised of anatomical study of fossil wood collected from Chnji formation (72°22'E, 32°41'N) of Miocene age exposed at Chinji National Reservoir. The material consists of a single piece of petrified wood dark brown in colour. The three dimensional sections were prepared by ground thin section technique. Microscopic examination of the characters was compared with modern and fossil wood and found comparable with the family Leguminosae. The closest resemblance of our fossil wood is with the wood of Ougenia. This fossil wood shows close resemblance in respect of vessels, fibers, parenchyma and xylem rays character. Therefore it is considered as new species and it is named Ougenioxylon chienjiensis sp. nov. The specific epithet refers to Chinji formation to which fossil wood belongs.

Application of “Swanson’s Middle range Caring Theory” in Sweden after miscarriage

Objective: The aim of this study was to apply Swanson’s Middle range Caring Theory to the follow-up visit with a midwife for Swedish women who have suffered early miscarriage or received care for late missed miscarriage in preg-nancy week 18-20. Methods: Twenty-five tape recorded interviews with women four weeks after their early miscarriages and thirteen tape recorded semi-structured interviews with midwives and nurses who had the experience of caring for women who have been diagnosed with a missed miscarriage during a routine ultrasound scan. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and interpreted deductively from the text using the theory. Results: Each woman described her personal experience of miscarriage in the relative terms of a human experience. The midwives and nurses described their experiences with women who received care for missed miscarriage. The interviews included information about the treatment provided by the caregivers during the period afterward of the diagnosis. The caregiver attitude was formed from Swanson’s caring categories: “Maintaining belief”, “knowing”, “being with”, “doing for”, “enabling”. Conclusions: Swanson’s Middle range Caring Theory as applied to the caregiver includes being emotionally present, giving support with respect for the woman’s dignity, being competent, meeting each woman’s own individual needs. Given the proper care after a miscarriage every woman has the power within herself to improve their wellbeing.

Method of Dynamic VaR and CVaR Risk Measures Forecasting for Long range Dependent Time Series on the Base of the Heteroscedastic Model

The paper proposes a new method of dynamic VaR and CVaR risk measures forecasting. The method is designed for obtaining the forecast estimates of risk measures for volatile time series with long range dependence. The method is based on the heteroskedastic time series model. The FIGARCH model is used for volatility modeling and forecasting. The model is reduced to the AR model of infinite order. The reduced system of Yule-Walker equations is solved to find the autoregression coefficients. The regression equation for the autocorrelation function based on the definition of a long-range dependence is used to get the autocorrelation estimates. An optimization procedure is proposed to specify the estimates of autocorrelation coefficients. The procedure for obtaining of the forecast values of dynamic risk measures VaR and CVaR is formalized as a multi-step algorithm. The algorithm includes the following steps: autoregression forecasting, innovation highlighting, obtaining of the assessments for static risk measures for residuals of the model, forming of the final forecast using the proposed formulas, quality analysis of the results. The proposed method is applied to the time series of the index of the Tokyo stock exchange. The quality analysis using various tests is conducted and confirmed the high quality of the obtained estimates.

Analysis of Wide-Bandgap Material OPFET UV Detectors for High Dynamic range Imaging and Communication Applications

The ultraviolet (UV) photoresponses of Wurtzite GaN, ZnO, and 6H-SiC-based Optical Field Effect Transistor (OPFET) detectors are estimated with an in-depth analysis of the same considering the generalized model and the front-illuminated model for high resolution imaging and UV communication applications. The gate materials considered for the proposed study are gold (Au) and Indium-Tin-Oxide (ITO) for GaN, Au for SiC, and Au and silver dioxide (AgO2) for ZnO. The results indicate significant improvement in the Linear Dynamic range (LDR) over the previously investigated GaN OPFET (buried-gate, front-illuminated and generalized) models with Au gate. The generalized model has superior dynamic range than the front-illuminated model. In terms of responsivity, all the models including buried-gate OPFET exhibit high and comparable photoresponses. Buried-gate devices on the whole, exhibit faster response than the surface gate models except in the AgO2-ZnO generalized OPFET model wherein the switching time is the lowest. The generalized model enables faster switching than the front-illuminated model. The switching times in all the cases are of the order of nanoseconds to picoseconds. The SiC generalized OPFET model shows the highest 3-dB bandwidths of 11.88 GHz, 36.2 GHz, and 364 GHz, and modest unity-gain cut-off frequencies of 4.62 GHz, 8.71 GHz, and 5.71 GHz at the optical power densities of 0.575 μW/cm2, 0.575 mW/cm2, and 0.575 W/cm2 respectively. These are in overall, the highest detection-cum-amplifi-cation bandwidths among all the investigated devices. The same device exhibits the highest LDR of 73.3 dB. The device performance is superior to most of the other existing detectors along with comparable LDR, thus, emerging as a high performance photodetector for imaging and communication applications. What Is the Accuracy of Shoulder range of Motion Measurements on Physical Exam?

The purpose of this study is to investigate a new method for measuring shoulder range of motion (ROM) in an orthopedic practice utilizing a smartphone application to improve accuracy from physical exam typically used in research. Our aim is to evaluate the application, Physio2Go (P2G), which uses a virtual goniometer, assessing validity by comparing its measurements to those taken by a universal goniometer (UG). Two observers of varying clinical experience, a research assistant and research fellow, compared measurements. Statistically, we used the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), and the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC). Following validation we tested P2G in symptomatic postoperative shoulder patients measuring forward flexion (FF) and external rotation (ER). We compared P2G measurements to visual estimation (VE) done by a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon. Statistically we used ICC, Bland- Altman plots with 95% limits of agreement (LOA), and scatter plots. We examined the impact of the application using Welch’s t-test comparing pre-to-postoperative ROM improvements using the values obtained by P2G and VE. We found high intra-rater reliability of P2G for both observers, substantial correlation between UG and P2G measurements, highly correlated inter-observer reliability for UG and P2G, and statistically significant PCC values (p < 0.05). As expected, ROM measurements of symptomatic patients comparing P2G and VE measurements demonstrated lower correlation. Bland-Altman plots demonstrated wide confidence intervals;scatterplots and histograms confirmed low agreement among measurement methods. Clinical application demonstrated varying statistical significance depending on whether measurements were done by P2G or VE. Our study found that P2G provided superior reliability compared to the customary physical exam routinely used for orthopedic research.
