Influence of BPPV and Meniere's Disease on Cognitive Abilities: A questionnaire-Based Study

The vestibular system connects the inner ear to the midbrain and subcortical structures and can affect cognition. Patients with vertigo often experience cognitive symptoms such as attention deficits, memory problems, and spatial perception difficulties. This study aimed to explore the cognitive impairments associated with Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo(BPPV) and Meniere's Disease(MD). A non-experimental group comparison design was used with 107 participants divided into three groups: Group I(clinically normal), Group II(BPPV), and Group III(MD). Participants completed a questionnaire with 10 cognition-related questions, and their responses were scored. The data were found to be non-normally distributed. The analysis revealed a significant difference in scores between Group I and both Group II and Group III. Chi-square tests showed that the responses to cognition-related questions varied among the groups, with Group II exhibiting more cognitive problems. Associated conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and hearing loss did not significantly influence the responses within each group. This study suggests a significant relationship between cognitive problems and patients with BPPV and MD. However, there was no association found between the cognitive problems experienced in BPPV and MD patients. These findings align with previous research indicating that vestibular disorders can lead to deficits in spatial memory, attention, and other cognitive functions. By understanding the link between cognition and vestibular disorders, we can improve diagnosis and rehabilitation services to enhance the quality of life for these patients.

Objective:The aim of this study is to evaluate the Chinese Version of the Tinnitus Primary Function questionnaire(TPFQ).Methods:One hundred and sixteen patients who had been suffering from tinnitus for over 3 months were included in this study.Those tinnitus patients were administered the TPFQ,the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory(THI),the Beck Anxiety Inventory(BAI),the Beck Depression Inventory(BDI),and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI).Additionally,the magnitude estimate of tinnitus loudness,pure tone audiogram,and tinnitus matching was obtained.The factor structure was measured using the Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin test.The internal consistency was examined using Cronbach'sαcoefficient.The relationships between the TPFQ scores and other measurements were compared using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient.Results:The Cronbach'sαof the 20-item version of TPFQ was 0.94,and that of the 12-item version of TPFQ was 0.92.Both the 20-and 12-item versions of TPFQ were significantly correlated with magnitude estimation of tinnitus loudness,THI,PSQI,BDI,and BAI.The average pure tone hearing threshold was significantly correlated with the hearing subscale.Conclusion:The 20-and 12-item Chinese versions of TPFQ are reliable and valid measures of tinnitus.The TPFQ can be applied to the assessment and management of tinnitus among the Chinese-speaking population.

This study investigated the factors that are associated with sleep disturbances among Chinese athletes.Sleep quality and associated factors were assessed by the Athlete Sleep Screening questionnaire(ASSQ,n?394,aged 18–32 years,47.6%female).Sleep difficulty score(SDS)and level of sleep problem(none,mild,moderate,or severe)were used to classify participants'sleep quality.Categorical variables were analyzed by Chi-square or fisher's exact tests.An ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to explore factors with poor sleep(SDS8).Approximately 14.2%of participants had moderate to severe sleep problem(SDS8).Fifty-nine percent of the athletes reported sleep disturbance during travel,while 43.3%experienced daytime dysfunction when travelling for competition.No significant difference was found in the SDS category between gender,sports level and events.Athletes with evening chronotype were more likely to report worse sleep than athletes with morning and intermediate chronotype(OR,2.25;95%CI,1.44–3.52;p<0.001).For each additional year of age,there was an increase of odds ratio for poor sleep quality(OR,1.15;95%CI,1.04–1.26;p?0.004),while each additional year of training reduced the odds ratio(OR,0.95;95%CI,0.91–0.99;p?0.044).To improve sleep health in athletes,chronotype,travel-related issues,age and years of training should be taken into consideration.

The use of voice to perform biometric authentication is an importanttechnological development,because it is a non-invasive identification methodand does not require special hardware,so it is less likely to arouse user disgust.This study tries to apply the voice recognition technology to the speech-driveninteractive voice response questionnaire system aiming to upgrade the traditionalspeech system to an intelligent voice response questionnaire network so that thenew device may offer enterprises more precise data for customer relationshipmanagement(CRM).The intelligence-type voice response gadget is becominga new mobile channel at the current time,with functions of the questionnaireto be built in for the convenience of collecting information on local preferencesthat can be used for localized promotion and publicity.Authors of this study propose a framework using voice recognition and intelligent analysis models to identify target customers through voice messages gathered in the voice response questionnaire system;that is,transforming the traditional speech system to anintelligent voice complex.The speaker recognition system discussed hereemploys volume as the acoustic feature in endpoint detection as the computationload is usually low in this method.To correct two types of errors found in the endpoint detection practice because of ambient noise,this study suggests ways toimprove the situation.First,to reach high accuracy,this study follows a dynamictime warping(DTW)based method to gain speaker identification.Second,it isdevoted to avoiding any errors in endpoint detection by filtering noise from voicesignals before getting recognition and deleting any test utterances that might negatively affect the results of recognition.It is hoped that by so doing the recognitionrate is improved.According to the experimental results,the method proposed inthis research has a high recognition rate,whether it is on personal-level or industrial-level computers,and can reach the practical application standard.Therefore,the voice ma

Objective This study is aimed to report the development,the reliability and validity of the Chinese Children Physical Activity questionnaire(CCPAQ)which was designed for the assessment of physical activity pattern in young population in China.Methods The CCPAQ was administered for two times in 119 children(mean age 13.1±2.4 years;boys 47%)to examine reliability by using intraclass correlation coefficients.Validity was determined in 106 participants by agreement with the CCPAQ measures and the objective method,the ActiGraph accelerometer.Data on physical activity patter n including time spe nt on d iff ere nt intensi ties and total physical activity,sedentary behavior as well as physical activity energy expenditure were used to assess the validity with Spearman's correlation coefficient and the Bland-Altman plots.Results The reliability coefficient of the CCPAQ ranged from 0.63-0.93(Intra-class correlation coefficient).Spearman's correlation coefficient for validity of time spent on total physical activity and sedentary behavior were all 0.32(P<0.001),and for physical activity energy expenditure was 0.58(P<0.001).Time spent on moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and light physical activity showed a relatively low correlation with the accelerometer(rho=0.20,P=0.040;rho=0.19,P=0.054).Conclusion The CCPAQ appears to be a promising and feasible method to assess physical activity pattern in Chinese children.

Objective The primary objective of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire(FFQ) among Chinese children aged 12-17 years. Methods A semi-quantitative 72-food item FFQ was developed for children aged 12-17 years. The reliability and validity of this FFQ were evaluated against 24-h dietary recalls(24 h DRs) to measure the consumption of foods and nutrients. We administered two FFQs and three DRs to children(N = 160) over a period of 1 month to evaluate the reliability and validity. Reliability was examined by quartile agreement and intraclass correlation coefficients(ICCs), and validity was examined by quartile agreement, Bland-Altman plots and correlation with DRs. Results For reliability, the ICCs between the two FFQs ranged from 0.21 to 0.76 for foods and nutrients, and the quartile agreement ranged from 70.0% to 95.0% in the same or adjacent quartiles. Spearman’s correlation coefficients of foods and nutrients between the second FFQ and the 24 h DRs ranged from-0.04 to 0.59. The Bland-Altman plots demonstrated good agreement across the range of intakes among nutrients. The quartile agreement ranged from 50.0% to 100.0%, with infrequent misclassification. Conclusion The FFQ assessment of dietary intakes demonstrated acceptable relative validity and high reproducibility for Chinese children aged 12-17 years.

Background Little is known about asthma control and perception of asthma among asthmatic patients in China.This study marked the first survey conducted on a national scale that aimed at obtaining baseline information on asthma control and patients＇ perception of asthma and providing a point of reference for future studies.Methods This face-to-face,questionnaire-based survey was conducted from April 2007 to March 2008 with 3 069 asthmatic patients from the respiratory outpatient clinics of 36 general hospitals located in 10 geographically dispersed cities.Results Consistent with the Global Initiative for Asthma （GINA） guidelines,28.7% and 45.0% of our patients achieved control and partial control,respectively.Of the patients in the study,only 21.8% had used a peak flow meter （PFM）,and 6.6% of these patients used it daily.Inhaled corticosteroids （ICS） plus a long-acting β2 agonist （LABA） and ICS were the two most common medication regimens and were used in 45.6% and 30.4% of patients,respectively.Asthma had a significant effect on the patients＇ life and work.A considerable number of hospitalizations,emergency department visits,and sick days were observed.Conclusion Despite improvements in asthma control and ICS and PFM compliance compared with past literature,the current level of asthma control countrywide continues to fall short of the goals set in the GINA.

Background:The Global Physical Activity questionnaire(GPAQ)has been used to measure physical activity(PA)and sedentary time in France,but no study has assessed its psychometric properties.This study aimed to compare the reliability as well as criterion and concurrent validity of the French version of the GPAQ with the French International Physical Activity questionnaire long form(IPAQ-LF)and use of an accelerometer in a general adult population.Methods:We included 92 participants(students or staff)from the Medicine Campus at the University of Lorraine,Nancy(north-eastern France).The French GPAQ was completed twice,7 days apart,to study test-retest reliability.The IPAQ-LF was used to assess concurrent validity of the GPAQ,and participants wore an accelerometer(ActiGraph GT3X+)for 7 days to study criterion validity.Reliability as well as concurrent and criterion validity of the GPAQ were tested by the intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC),Spearman correlation coefficient for quantitative variables,and Kappa and Phi coefficients for qualitative variables.Both concurrent and criterion validity of GPAQ were assessed by Bland-Altman plots.Results:The GPAQ showed poor to good reliability(ICC=0.37-0.94;Kappa=0.50-0.62)and concurrent validity(Spearman r=0.41-0.86),but only poor criterion validity(Spearman r=-0.22-0.42).Limits of agreement for the GPAQ and accelerometer were wide,with differences between 286.5 min/week and 601.3 min/week.Conclusion:The French version of the GPAQ provides limited but acceptable reliability and validity for the measurement of PA and sedentary time.It may be used for assessing PA and sedentary time in a French adult population.

Background Although the validity of non-motor symptoms screening questionnaire （NMSQuest） for Parkinson＇s disease has been verified in several recent researches, the specificity of the questionnaire is still in doubt. This study aimed to compare the non-motor symptoms （NMS） in Parkinson＇s disease （PD） with a medically ill control group. Methods In this study, the first comprehensive clinic-based NMS screening questionnaire for PD developed by the Parkinson＇s Disease Non-Motor Group （PDNMG） was used. Data from 90 PD patients and 270 sex-and age-matched control subjects, including stroke （n=90）, heart disease （n=-90） and diabetes （n=-90） were analyzed. Results Compared with control group, NMS was more common in PD; on an average, most PD patients reported more than 12 non-motor items. There was a correlation of total NMS score in PD patients with Hoehn ＆ Yahr Staging, but not with age, sex distribution, disease duration, or age at disease onset. Additionally, depression, constipation and impaired olfaction which occurred prior to the motor symptoms of PD were reported in this study. Conclusions NMS are more common in PD patients. There are some NMS that occurred at the preclinical stage of PD and might predict the onset of motor symptoms of PD patients.
