qigong in the treatment of children with autism spectrum disorder:A systematic review

Background: Autism spectrum disorder is a condition that affects all races, ethnic and socioeconomic groups. With a high incidenee ratio of one in every 68, it has become one of the most discussed psychiatric disorders. For this reason, the need for investigating novel treatments has been emerging. qigong, a traditional Chinese mind-body technique, has already proven to be able to reduce symptoms of several physical and psychological illnesses. Objective: The purpose of this systematic review is to examine and categorize the current scientific evidence regarding the efficacy of qigong on children suffering from autism spectrum disorders. Search strategy: A systematic literature search of the electronic scientific databases PubMed, Clinical ***, BioMed Central, PubMed Central and Google Scholar was performed to identify studies of qigong in the treatment of children with autism spectrum disorder. Inclusion criteria: This review included randomized controlled trials, replication studies, retrospective studies and observational follow-up studies of qigong on children with autism spectrum disorder. Case reports and case series were excluded. Data extraction and analysis: Two researchers independently evaluated the methodological quality of all included studies. Any discrepancies were solved by discussion until consensus was achieved. Results: Our literature search identified 157 publications, and 10 additional publications from hand search of references. After duplicate removal, 103 records remained. After the title/abstract screening, 19 publications were obtained for detailed evaluation. After detailed evaluation, 10 studies were included. Seven studies were conducted with small children with 2-6 years old employing qigong massage, and three studies were con ducted with older children aged 7-17 years old applying both qigong massage (one study) and Neigong (two studies). The idealist and pragmatist view of qi in tai chi and qigong:A narrative commentary and review

Qi, often translated as ‘‘vital energy," is a central concept in tai chi and qigong that has puzzled physicians, scientists, and people in the West. To date, qi is not falsifiable by the scientific method and thus cannot be subject to scientific inquiry, leading many to criticize it as ‘‘pseudoscientific." Even as medical research reveals the health benefits of tai chi and qigong, many wonder how to treat this seemingly outdated concept when promoting these meditative practices. While some tai chi and qigong practitioners insist on the existence of qi, more skeptical thinkers suggest that a scientific understanding should replace this ‘‘superstitious" idea. Integrative health professionals must be equipped to discuss this concept intelligently by considering a couple of subtle, clarifying points often missing from the ***, science's inability to verify qi's existence does not affirm its nonexistence. In fact, under the philosophical system of idealism, qi might not be said to be less real than things that are verifiable by ***, under the instrumental and pragmatic view of science, health professionals should be cautious not to declare what is metaphysically real or unreal but instead what is useful and not useful. Second,even though qi may be pseudoscientific, it remains useful and indispensable to the correct practice of tai chi and qigong. Tai chi and qigong practitioners routinely visualize and perceive the flow of qi to guide their movements, breathing, and mental activity. As such, qi and related metaphysical concepts serve as a useful mental model during practice, and belief in them may be viewed as an ‘‘expedient means" to achieve one's health goals.

Effect of conventional medical treatment plus qigong exercise on type 2 diabetes mellitus in Chinese patients： A Meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the effect of conventional medical treatment plus qigong exercise on type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2 DM) in Chinese ***: A literature search was conducted in Pub Med, Medline, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Wanfang and China Science and Technology Journal Database until on January 2017. In this Meta-analysis, enrolled were the studies, including experimental group(with conventional medical treatment plus qigong therapy) and control group(with conventional medicaltreatment plus diet control or other exercises).Then, the standardized mean differences(SMDs) of fasting blood-glucose(FBG), 2-hplasmaglucose(2 h PG), hemoglobin Alc(Hb Alc), triglyceride(TG),total cholesterol(TC), high-density lipoprotein(HDL) and low density lipoprotein(LDL), as well as their 95% confidence interval(CIs) were calculated to evaluate the effect of qigong on patients with T2 DM by Rev Man 5.2 and Stata 11.0 ***: Totally 834 cases of T2 DM from 11 studies were included in this review. The pooled SMDs with its 95% CIs of FBG, 2 h PG, Hb Alc, TG,TC, HDL and LDL were-0.70(-0.93,-0.47),-0.66(-1.11,-0.21),-0.73(-0.96,-0.50),-1.05(-1.67,-0.43),-0.42(-1.12, 0.28), 0.69(0.19, 1.19), and-0.26(-0.69, 0.18), *** pooled data showed significantly difference between qigong and the levels of FBG, 2 h PG, Hb A1 c,TG, and HDL in patients with T2 DM(P qigong exercise might have significant effect on T2 DM in Chinese patients.

Effects of Taijiquan and qigong exercises on depression and anxiety levels in patients with substance use disorders:A systematic review and meta-analysis

Effects of Tai Chi and qigong on health indicators in people with lumbar disc herniation: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective: To evaluate the effect of Tai Chi and qigong on patients with lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Methods: Relevant data were retrieved from nine English and Chinese databases, including Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Wanfang Data, from inception to June 2024. All published randomized controlled trials assessing the effect of Tai Chi and qigong on visual analog scale (VAS) pain, Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score, and other health indicators in participants with LDH compared to usual medical care or other treatments were included. Grey literature, trials involving the pushing of hands (Tui Shou) or Tai Chi with weapons, and trials with co-interventions (Tai Chi/qigong plus another treatment) were excluded. Methodological quality was analyzed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool, and evidence quality was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) tool. Meta-analyses were conducted using Stata 16.0 software. Results: Fourteen trials (954 patients) were included in this study. Tai Chi and qigong were associated with lower VAS pain scores (standardized mean difference −0.55, 95% confidence interval [CI] −0.95 to −0.15, P =.01), higher JOA scores (mean difference [MD] 4.40, 95% CI 2.62 to 6.18, P qigong showed enhanced effects on pain and JOA scores. When compared to other exercises or massage, the effect on pain scores was similar but that on JOA scores was significant. Conclusions: Tai Chi and qigong may have favorable effects on VAS pain and JOA scores compared with usual care, and on JOA scores compared with other exercises or massage in patients with LDH. Given the overall poor quality of the evidence, the results of current study should be interpreted cautiously. © 2024 Beijing University of Chinese Medicine

Yoga and qigong in the Psychological Prevention of Mental Health Disorders:A Conceptual Synthesis

The study proposes to explore two alternative medicine therapies--qigong and yoga for balanc- ing the essential duo of holistic mind-body and consequently offer a solution for stress, uncertainty, anxiety and depression. Qualitative research methods have been used to create a conceptual synthesis of yoga and qigong. It is suggested that an increased sense of control is the interface between these two modalitieso This conceptual congruence of qigong and yoga is thought to be a selective, curative method, a prescription for ideal living and a ground of human essence existence. Furthermore, this essence is thought to enhance the mind＇s self-regulatory processes and prevent mental health disorders. The two alternative therapies can prevent mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression and, minimize mental health disruptions such as stress and poor quality of life. It is suggested that patients and/or clients can benefit from this fusion.

ANALYSIS ON THE THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF ULCERATIVE COLITIS TREATED WITH ELECTROACUPUNCTURE PLUS qigong

53 cases of ulcerative colitis were treated with electroacupuncture (EA) plus qigong, a mong them, 41 cases were cured and 12 improved; Of 30 cases treated with traditional acupuncture,17 cases were cured, 11 improved and 2 were ineffective; Among 30 cases treated with simple qigong,16 cases were cured, 13 improved and one case was ineffective. There was a significant difference a mong the EA plus qigong treatment group, traditional acupuncture group and simple qigong group (P<0.01).
