psychological Outcomes in Disaster Responders: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on the Effect of Social Support

Disaster response work is associated with various psychological outcomes. In post-disaster conditions,social support is generally observed to impact mental health, particularly for survivors. This review was conducted to survey the extent of social support effectiveness on disaster responder groups. Published quantitative social support studies on police, emergency medical responders,rescue and recovery workers, firefighters, and military responders were searched in various academic databases using keyword searches, a reference list search, and a citation search that resulted in 24 studies with 90 effect sizes being included in the final data base. Articles were coded and effect sizes were averaged using the Hedges–Vevea Random Effects model. Nineteen categories of psychological outcomes(for example, anxiety, depression,posttraumatic stress symptoms, and psychological distress)and eight classifications of support were coded. Social support was found to be associated with anxiety, burnout,depression, job control, job satisfaction, psychological distress, turnover intentions, and work engagement, with mean effect sizes from-0.36 to 0.57. Most studies measured perceived social support and negative *** support correlated with outcomes in police responders and rescue and recovery workers. This review discusses the breadth of effect of social support, as well as other elements, such as temporal factors, that may affect the effectiveness of social support in disaster responders.

The coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19)pandemic has put healthcare workers in an unprecedented situation,increasing their psychological and mental health *** research has focused on the issues surrounding anxiety,depression,and stress among healthcare *** consequences of mental health problems on healthcare workers’physical health,health-compromising behaviours,suicide ideation,family relationships,and job satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic are not well *** psychological stress has known effects on an individual’s physical *** healthcare workers with preexisting comorbidities,psychological stressors may exacerbate their current health *** professionals are known to have a high risk of substance use,hence they may be at risk of development of substance use addiction or vulnerable to addiction *** COVID-19 healthcare workers are being pushed above and beyond their limits,possibly resulting in suicidal ***,the burden of high workload and burnout may also have serious manifestations in relationships with family and an intention to quit their *** studies should explore the above-mentioned deleterious consequences to provide insight into the development of mental healthcare strategies to combat the psychological impact of COVID-19 on healthcare workers during the COVID-19 *** is imperative to employ strategies to care for and policies to protect the psychological well-being of healthcare workers.

Research on virtual reality system design for body and psychological rehabilitation

There are many people in China who suffered from physical and mental diseases and need physical and psychological rehabilitation. Traditional treatments can work in rehabilitation, but will take much money and labor. In recent years, virtual reality(VR) technology has become a new direction to innovate rehabilitation. This paper summarizes the research results of VR technology in rehabilitation for stroke, anxiety, depression and autism. Based on these results, we propose a framework for VR rehabilitation system with virtual agents. A prototype system is developed to corroborate the proposed design guidelines. With the prototype rehabilitation system, autistic children can train their life skills in different scenarios. Preliminary test results show the proposed framework can push users to take the rehabilitation training actively and can be a new method for rehabilitation training.

An overview of studies on psychological well-being in children born following assisted reproductive technologies

Over the course of the past 35 years,assisted reproductive technologies(ARTs)have been increasingly used worldwide,while debates on their safety have been *** defects and imprinting disorders were reported in previous ***,the psychological development of children born following ARTs has become a major concern *** review gives a systematic view of psychological well-being of children conceived by different types of ART,including in vitro fertilization,intracytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI),preimplantation genetic diagnosis/screening,and in vitro *** previous studies are analyzed in three sections:(1)cognitive,motor,and language developments,(2)behavior problems and socio-emotional development,and(3)parent-child *** conclude that although the majority of the studies on cognitive,motor,and language developments reported comparable achievements in the ART group *** naturally conceived group,lower intelligence quotient(IQ)scores,worse visual-motor ability or locomotor development,and delayed receptive language competence were found in the ART *** results on the socio-emotional development were *** for the behavior problems,a higher prevalence of behavior problems existed in ART children;moreover,ICSI children were found to be at a higher risk of autism than the general ***,ART parents tended to have positive parental attitudes and be more protective of their *** suggestions for further research are also given in this review.

Involvement of parasympathetic pelvic efferent pathway in psychological stress-induced defecation

Serotonin transporter and cholecystokinin in diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome: Associations with abdominal pain, visceral hypersensitivity and psychological performance

Adolescents' personal beliefs about sufficient physical activity are more closely related to sleep and psychological functioning than self-reported physical activity: A prospective study

Background: Preliminary evidence among adults suggests that the ways in which individuals think about their physical activity(PA) behavior is more closely associated with their well-being than self-reported PA. This study therefore aimed to examine whether and how self-reported PA and personal beliefs about suffbcient PA are associated with sleep and psychological functioning in a sample of Swiss adolescents, using both cross-sectional and prospective ***: An overall sample of 864 vocational students(368 girls, 17.98± 1.36 years, mean ± SD) was followed prospectively over a 10-month period. At each measurement occasion, participants filled in a series of self-report questiocnaires to assess their PA levels, their personal beliefs about whether or not they engage in sufficient PA, sleep(insomnia symptoms, sleep quality, sleep-onset latency, and number of awakenings),and psychological functioning(depressive symptoms, quality of life, perceived stress, and mental toughness).Results: Adolescents who believe that they are sufficiently physically active to maintain good health reported more restoring sleep. No differen?ces in sleep were found between adolescents who meet PA recommendationsvs. those who do not. Additionally, adolescents who believe that they were sufficiently physically active also reported better psychological functioning. This close relationship between adolescents5 beliefs about their PA involvement and their sleep and psychological functioning was corroborated in the prospective ***: Cognitive factors should be studied more intensively when elucidating the relationship among PA, sleep, and psychological functioning in young people, particularly when aiming to develop new exercise interventions targeting psychological outcomes.

Clinical effects of comprehensive therapy of early psychological intervention and rehabilitation training on neurological rehabilitation of patients with acute stroke

Objective:To evaluate the clinical effects of comprehensive therapy of psychological intervention and rehabilitation training on the mental health of the patients with acute stroke. Methods:A total of 120 patients with acute stroke were randomly divided into trial group and control *** groups were given the corresponding drug therapy,medical basic nursing and convention ***,psychological intervention and comprehensive rehabilitation training were added to the trial ***-90,Europ stroke scales(ESS) score were assessed with each patient on day 3 for the first time and on day 21 for the second time; Barthel index was assessed on the day ***:After psychological intervention,SCL-90 declined significantly in the trial group comparing with the control group,there were signicant differences in the somatization,obsession,depression,anxiety,fear,ESS score,Barthel index and other psychological factors between the trial group and control group(Ppsychological intervention and rehabilitation training can significantly improve the mental health,limb movement function,stress ability and activity of daily living on the patients with acute stroke.
