Scatterings from surface plasmons to propagating waves at plasmonic discontinuities

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and their low-frequency counterpart spoof SPPs have attracted intensive interests in sciences [1,2], due to their unprecedented capabilities to confine electromagnetic (EM) fields at deep-subwavelength scale, leading to many applications such as super-resolution imaging [3], plasmonic lasers [4], surfaced-enhanced Raman effect [5], plasmonic waveguides [6,7] or circuits [8], etc. In practice, scatterings of SPPs to propagating waves (PWs) are inevitable as SPPs encounter discontinuities (say, interfaces between two different plasmonic systems). Such scatterings can lead to undesired radiation losses which should be avoided, especially in those applications employing SPPs as information carriers (say, plasmonic waveguides and nano-circuits [6–8]). Meanwhile, SPP-PW scatterings can also be utilized to achieve certain desired functionalities. For example, one can purposely place a set of carefully designed scatters on a plasmonic surface to scatter SPPs, generating fascinating effects such as holograms, focusing, or even directional radiations [9,10]. However, theoretical understandings on the inherent physics governing SPP-PW scatterings are far from satisfactory. Without a simple picture on such processes, people usually have to rely on full-wave simulations to optimize the devices to either suppress or utilize the SPP-PW scatterings. Although several theoretical approaches were proposed to study the SPP transmission/ reflection behaviors at certain plasmonic interfaces [11,12], the SPP-PW scatterings are usually overlooked. Moreover, since PWs have infinite channels to transport in free space, it is difficult to derive an analytical formula to describe such SPP-PW processes.

Absence of high amplitude propagating contractions in subjects with chronic spinal cord injury

AIM: To investigate the presence or absence of high amplitude propagating contractions (HAPC), as well as the other measures of colonic motility, in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). METHODS: Prolonged colonic ambulatory manometric studies were performed on 14 male volunteers: 8 with SCI (mean age, 59 ± 13 years; mean duration of injury, 13 ± 4 years) and 6 healthy able-bodied controls (mean age, 57 ± 10 years). A solid-state manometry catheter was endoscopically clipped to the splenic flexure. Recording was performed for > 24 h after manometric catheter placement. RESULTS: HAPC were absent in individuals with SCI during pre-sleep, sleep, and post-sleep phases. HAPC were significantly increased after awakening in non-SCI controls (0.8 ± 0.2 HAPC/h vs 10.5 ± 2.0 HAPC/h, P < 0.005). The motility index was lower in those with SCI than in controls preand post-sleep (SCI vs non-SCI: Pre-sleep, 2.4 ± 0.4 vs 8.8 ± 1.9, P < 0.01; Post-sleep, 4.3 ± 0.8 vs 16.5 ± 4.5, P < 0.05). However, a sleepinduced depression of colonic motility was observed in both the SCI and non-SCI groups (Pre-sleep vs Sleep, non-SCI: 8.8 ± 1.9 vs 2.1 ± 0.9, P < 0.002; SCI: 2.4 ± 0.4 vs 0.2 ± 0.03, P < 0.001), with the motility index of those with SCI during sleep not significantly different than that of the controls. CONCLUSION: HAPC were not observed in individuals with SCI preor post-sleep. A sleep-induced depression in general colonic motility was evident in SCI and control subjects.

EXACT ANALYTIC SOLUTIONS OF STATIONARY AND FAST propagating CRACKS IN A STRIP

The stress boundary-value problem of a semi-infinite crack in a strip has been thorough-ly solved in terms of conformal mapping. Subsequently a more difficult problem, propa-gating crack in a strip, is considered. Based on the formulation developed by the author, byusing conformal transformation mapping regions in z1 plane and z2 plane onto the interiorof the unit circle in ζ plane, the rather complicated boundary-value problem of the waveequations is also solved thoroughly. The exact analytic solutions in closed form are achiev-ed, and the dynamic solutions reduce to the static ones when crack speed V→0.

Universality Class of the Nonequilibrium Phase Transition in Two-Dimensional Ising Ferromagnet Driven by propagating Magnetic Field Wave

The purpose of this work is to identify the universality class of the nonequilibrium phase transition in the two-dimensional kinetic Ising ferromagnet driven by propagating magnetic field wave. To address this issue, the finite size analysis of the nonequilibrium phase transition, in two-dimensional Ising ferromagnet driven by plane propagating magnetic wave, is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. It is observed that the system undergoes a nonequilibrium dynamic phase transition from a high temperature dynamically symmetric (propagating) phase to a low temperature dynamically symmetry-broken (pinned) phase as the system is cooled below the transition temperature. This transition temperature is determined precisely by studying the fourth-order Binder Cumulant of the dynamic order parameter as a function of temperature for different system sizes (L). From the finite size analysis of dynamic order parameter ?and the dynamic susceptibility , we have estimated the critical exponents and ?(measured from the data read at the critical temperature obtained from Binder cumulant), and (measured from the peak positions of dynamic susceptibility). Our results indicate that such driven Ising ferromagnet belongs to the same universality class of the two-dimensional equilibrium Ising ferromagnet (where and ), within the limits of statistical errors.

Weaning and Field Survival Responses of Propagules to propagating Structures and Seedling Types in Sheanut Production in Tropical Africa

The Shea is an economic tree found in West and Central Africa with huge industrial uses in the confectionery, pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors worldwide. Its rapid multiplication has been hampered by its slow growth and long gestation period. Successes in cutting propagation have been achieved (between 60% - 80%), however weaning of the rooted cuttings for establishment has been a major challenge. Two factorial experiments were carried out in a study in 2012. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of propagating structures and seedling types on the weaning and subsequent field establishment of propagules of Shea tree for plantation establishment. A randomized complete block design with three replications was used. Survival of the rooted cuttings in the mist propagator was very high (93.3%) and comparable to that of the seedlings (100%). The rooted cuttings in mist propagator produced the highest number of leaves, 11 times greater than the least number of leaves produced by seedlings in the lath house. Comparing the seedling types, the rooted cuttings produced significantly greater number of leaves, 4.8 times than the normal seedlings. Rooted cuttings in the mist propagator produced the biggest stem girth significantly greater than the seedlings kept in all the structures. The rooted cuttings in the mist propagator produced 4.4 times bigger stem girths than the seedlings in the lath house which had the smallest stem girth. The rooted cuttings in the mist propagator produced the tallest plants, 1.4 times and 1.9 times significantly taller than the seedlings in the propagating pit and lath house, respectively, which produced the shortest plants. There was a significant relationship between field survival of propagules and the month of establishment expressed as Y (percent survival) = -2844 + 0.070 × (month);P < 0.001;R2 = 0.68;n = 90. The effects of preheating temperature and W powder size on the Self propagating High temperature Synthesis(SHS) of Ti W C system were studied. Preheated mixtures and the decrease of W powder size can accelerate the formation of (W,Ti)C powders. The uniphase (W,Ti)C (WC∶TiC=5∶5) powders with 0.32% free carbon were synthesized from Ti, W, C powders by SHS. The powder size of the product was 3～5 μm.

The effect of diffraction on the geometry of initially plane acoustic transients propagating in liquids is studied.Theoretical considerations concern the transition from plane to spherical waves upon passing the border between near and far wave zone.Experiments with CO_(2)-laser-generated acoustic waves in absorbing liquids are discussed.The wavefront curvatures and lateral extensions at different propagating distances in n-heptane are analyzed by high-speed shadowgraphy and measurements with a piezoelectric transducer.Good agreement between theory and experiment is obtained.
