Chemical stabilization of a high-pressure metastable state is a major challenge for the development of advanced materials.Although chemical pressure(Pchem) can effectively simulate the effect of physical pressure(Pphy)) experimental calibration of the pressure passed to local structural motifs,denoted as local chemical pressure(Pchem-△) which significantly governs the function of solid materials,remains absent due to the challenge of probing techniques.Here we establish an innovative methodology to experimentally calibrate the Pchem-△and build a bridge between Pchemand Pphyvia an optical probe strategy.Site-selective Bi3+-traced REVO4(RE=Y,Gd) is adopted as a prototype to introduce Bi3+optical probes and on-site sense of the Pchem-△experienced by the REO8motif.The cell compression of RE0.9gBi0.02VO4under Pphyis chemically simulated by smaller-ion substitution(Sc3+→RE3+) in RE0.98-xScxBi0.02VO4.The consistent red shift(△λ) of the emission spectra of Bi3+,which is dominated by locally pressure-induced REO8dodecahedral variation in RE0.98Bi0.02VO4(Pphy) and RE0.98-xScxBi0.02VO4(Pchem-△),respectively,is evidence of their similar pressure-dependent local structure evolution.This innovative △λ-based experimental calibration of Pchem-△in the crystal-field dimension portrays the anisotropic transmission of Pchemto the local structure and builds a bridge between Pchem-△and Pphyto guide a new perspective for affordable and practical interception of metastable states.

A simple and convenient pressure calibration method is developed for a newly designed portable wide-access ＇panoramic＇ cell. This cell is adapted to angle-dispersive-mode high-pressure in situ neutron diffraction of reactor neutron sources. This pressure calibration method has established a relationship between the cell pressure and the anvil displace- ment （gasket compression） based on the fixed-point calibration technique. By employing TiZr gasket with a thickness of 3 mm and WC anvil with a culet of 4 mm diameter, the average anvil displacements are 1.31 mm and 2.22 mm for Bi phase transitions （2.55 GPa and 7.7 GPa）, and 1.85 mm for Ba phase transitions （5.5 GPa）, respectively. In this pressure range, the pressure increases quickly with decreasing gasket thickness, and undergoes a linear increase with the anvil displacement. By extrapolating the calibration curve, the cell pressure will achieve 10 GPa when the anvil displacement is around 2.5 ram.

Raman scattering from highly-stressed anvil diamond

＜正＞Recently, there is an urgent need in high pressure community for a pressure scale whose accuracy is comparable to the high precision of experimental data. One of the difficulties is the lack of an absolute scale, in particular at high temperature, to evaluate the EOS of standard materials. Here, we propose that the depth of the seismic discontinuity be used as fixed point pressure calibrant over the lower mantle conditions.

The high-frequency edge of the first-order Raman mode of diamond reflects the stress state at the culet of anvil, and is often used for the pressure calibration in diamond anvil cell(DAC) experiments. Here we point out that the high-frequency edge of the diamond Raman phonon corresponds to the Brillouin zone(BZ) center Γ point as a function of pressure. The diamond Raman pressure gauge relies on the stability of crystal lattice of diamond under high stress. Upon the diamond anvil occurs failure under the uniaxial stress(197 GPa), the loss of intensity of the first-order Raman phonon and a stressdependent broad Raman band centered at 600 cm^(-1) are observed, which is associated with a strain-induced local mode corresponding to the BZ edge phonon of the L1 transverse acoustic phonon branch.
