Intrinsic effects of precursor functional groups on the Na storage performance in carbon anodes

The oxygen-containing functional groups in disordered carbon anodes have been widely reported to influence the Na storage performance.However,the effect of original oxygen-containing groups in the precursors on the final structures and electrochemical performance is rarely studied.Herein,we used the anthraquinone derivatives with different oxygen-containing functional groups as precursors to make the disordered carbon anodes for Na-ion batteries(NIBs).Through comprehensive structural and electrochemical analyses,we found that the different types of functional groups in carbon precursors directly affect the cross-linking process during carbonization.The original precursors containing enough inter-chain oxygen or oxygen-containing functional groups with unsaturated bonds unattached to the ring are beneficial for the oxygen atoms to remain or cross-link in structure to result in more C–O–C group,forming nanovoids and disordered structure,which then determine the high performance of the carbon anodes in NIBs.This work highlights the importance of the type/content of functional groups in precursor and provides guidance for the future design of carbon anodes in NIBs from the perspective of precursor selection.

All-inorganic cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals(CsPbX_(3),X=Cl,Br,I)have attracted considerable scientific and technological interest due to their precise bandgap tunability,high color purity and efficient luminescence.Nevertheless,their poor stability in harsh conditions such as moisture,ultraviolet(UV)light irradiation and high temperature,is a major obstacle for their further commercial applications.Herein,by simply using a new type of precursor,namely“HPbX_(3)”(X=Cl,Br,I),we can achieve the coordination equilibrium for Pb precursors during reaction and obtain high-quality perovskite nanocrystals with tremendously enhanced luminous efficiency and chemical stability based on hot-injection method.The prepared a-CsPbb nanocrystals exhibit an extremely high photoluminescence quantum yield of 96%and keep stable in air for more than two months without any post-synthesis treatment.Moreover,stability evaluations under UV light irradiation,water or thermal impact are also performed and the results show substantially improved stability of these nanocrystals as compared with the samples prepared using traditional Pbl_(2) as precursor.Through temperature-dependent(10-300 K)steady and transient spectral analysis combined with compositional measurements,it is revealed that the lower structural defect density,which is guaranteed by abundant halogen when using HPbX3 as precursor,is the most important reason for such performance enhancement.

Shikimic Acid Promotes Oligodendrocyte precursor Cell Differentiation and Accelerates Remyelination in Mice

The obstacle to successful remyelination in demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, mainly lies in the inability of oligodendrocyte precursor cells(OPCs) to differentiate, since OPCs and oligodendrocytelineage cells that are unable to fully differentiate are found in the areas of demyelination. Thus, promoting the differentiation of OPCs is vital for the treatment of demyelinating diseases. Shikimic acid(SA) is mainly derived from star anise, and is reported to have antiinfluenza, anti-oxidation, and anti-tumor effects. In the present study, we found that SA significantly promoted the differentiation of cultured rat OPCs without affecting their proliferation and apoptosis. In mice, SA exerted therapeutic effects on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis(EAE), such as alleviating clinical EAE scores, inhibiting inflammation, and reducing demyelination in the CNS. SA also promoted the differentiation of OPCs as well as their remyelination after lysolecithin-induced demyelination.Furthermore, we showed that the promotion effect of SA on OPC differentiation was associated with the up-regulation of phosphorylated m TOR. Taken together, our resultsdemonstrated that SA could act as a potential drug candidate for the treatment of demyelinating diseases.

Mutations of beta-amyloid precursor protein alter the consequence of Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis

Alzheimer's disease is pathologically defined by accumulation of extracellular amyloid-β(Aβ). Approximately 25 mutations in β-amyloid precursor protein(APP) are pathogenic and cause autosomal dominant Alzheimer's disease. To date, the mechanism underlying the effect of APP mutation on Aβ generation is unclear. Therefore, investigating the mechanism of APP mutation on Alzheimer's disease may help understanding of disease pathogenesis. Thus, APP mutations(A673T, A673 V, E682 K, E693 G, and E693Q) were transiently co-transfected into human embryonic kidney cells. Western blot assay was used to detect expression levels of APP, beta-secretase 1, and presenilin 1 in cells. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was performed to determine Aβ_(1–40) and Aβ_(1–42) levels. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass chromatography was used to examine VVIAT, FLF, ITL, VIV, IAT, VIT, TVI, and VVIA peptide levels. Immunofluorescence staining was performed to measure APP and early endosome antigen 1 immunoreactivity. Our results show that the protective A673 T mutation decreases Aβ_(42)/Aβ_(40) rate by downregulating IAT and upregulating VVIA levels. Pathogenic A673 V, E682 K, and E693 Q mutations promote Aβ_(42)/Aβ_(40) rate by increasing levels of CTF99, Aβ_(42), Aβ_(40), and IAT, and decreasing VVIA levels. Pathogenic E693 G mutation shows no significant change in Aβ_(42)/Aβ_(40) ratio because of inhibition of γ-secretase activity. APP mutations can change location from the cell surface to early endosomes. Our findings confirm that certain APP mutations accelerate Aβ generation by affecting the long Aβ cleavage pathway and increasing Aβ_(42/40) rate, thereby resulting in Alzheimer's disease.

miR-15b-5p targeting amyloid precursor protein is involved in the anti-amyloid eflect of curcumin in swAPP695-HEK293 cells

Curcumin exerts a neuroprotective effect on Alzheimer’s disease;however,it is not known whether microRNAs are involved in this protective effect.This study was conducted using swAPP695-HEK293 cells as an Alzheimer’s disease cell model.swAPP695-HEK293 cells were treated with 0,0.5,1,2,5,and 10μM curcumin for 24 hours.The changes in miR-15b-5p,miR-19a-3p,miR-195-5p,miR-101-3p,miR-216b-5p,miR-16-5p and miR-185-5p expression were assessed by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction.The mRNA and protein levels of amyloid precursor protein,amyloid-β40 and amyloid-β42 were evaluated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction,western blot assays and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.swAPP695-HEK293 cells were transfected with miR-15b-5p mimic,or treated with 1μM curcumin 24 hours before miR-15b-5p inhibitor transfection.The effects of curcumin on amyloid precursor protein,amyloid-β40 and amyloid-β42 levels were evaluated by western blot assays and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Luciferase assays were used to analyze the interaction between miR-15b-5p and the 3′-untranslated region of amyloid precursor protein.The results show that amyloid precursor protein and amyloid-βexpression were enhanced in swAPP695-HEK293 cells compared with HEK293 parental cells.Curcumin suppressed the expression of amyloid precursor protein and amyloid-βand up-regulated the expression of miR-15b-5p in swAPP695-HEK293 cells.In addition,we found a negative association of miR-15b-5p expression with amyloid precursor protein and amyloid-βlevels in the curcumin-treated cells.Luciferase assays revealed that miR-15b-5p impaired the luciferase activity of the plasmid harboring the 3′-untranslated region of amyloid precursor protein.These findings indicate that curcumin down-regulates the expression of amyloid precursor protein and amyloid-βin swAPP695-HEK293 cells,which was partially mediated by miR-15b-5p via targeting of the 3′-untranslated region of amyloid precursor protein.

The pathological implication of amyloid precursor protein(APP)in Alzheimer’s disease has been widely documented due to its involvement in the generation of amyloid-β peptide.However,the physiological functions of APP are still poorly understood.APP is considered a multimodal protein due to its role in a wide variety of processes,both in the embryo and in the adult brain.Specifically,APP seems to play a key role in the proliferation,differentiation and maturation of neural stem cells.In addition,APP can be processed through two canonical processing pathways,generating different functionally active fragments:soluble APP-α,soluble APP-β,amyloid-β peptide and the APP intracellular C-terminal domain.These fragments also appear to modulate various functions in neural stem cells,including the processes of proliferation,neurogenesis,gliogenesis or cell death.However,the molecular mechanisms involved in these effects are still unclear.In this review,we summarize the physiological functions of APP and its main proteolytic derivatives in neural stem cells,as well as the possible signaling pathways that could be implicated in these effects.The knowledge of these functions and signaling pathways involved in the onset or during the development of Alzheimer’s disease is essential to advance the understanding of the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease,and in the search for potential therapeutic targets.

The macroscopic mechanisms and associated atmospheric precursor environmental capacities that lead to secondary fine particle pollution

This paper establishes the kinetic equations in atmospheric chemistry that describe the macroscopic mechanisms of secondary fine particle pollution generated by precursors during atmospheric self-purification.The dynamic and static solutions of these equations can be applied to calculate quantitative relationships between the concentration ratio of precursors and secondary fine particles as well as the physical clearance power of the atmosphere,chemical reaction rate,and the scale of a contaminated area.The dynamic solution presented here therefore corresponds with a theoretical formula for calculating the overall rate constant for the oxidation reaction of reducing pollutants in the actual atmosphere based on their local concentrations and meteorological monitoring data.In addition,the static solution presented in this paper reveals the functional relationship between the concentration of secondary fine particles and precursor emission rate as well as atmospheric self-purification capacity.This result can be applied to determine the atmospheric environmental capacity of a precursor.Hourly records collected over the last 40 years from 378 weather stations in China's Mainland as well as the spatiotemporal distribution sequence of overall oxidation reaction rates from precursors show that when the reference concentration limit of secondary fine particles is100μmol m-3,the atmospheric environmental capacity of total precursors canbe calculated as 24890×1010 mol yr-1.Thus,when the annual average concentration limit of given fine particles is 35μg m-3 and the ratio of sulfate and nitrate to 30%and 20%of the total amount of fine particles,the capacities of SO2,NOx and NH3 are 1255,1344,and 832(1010g yr-1),respectively.The clearance density of precursors for different return periods across China's Mainland under above conditions are also provided in this study.

Effects of precursor moisture and inert N_2 atmosphere calcinations on structure and properties of alumina modified CeZrLaNd mixed oxides

CeO_2-ZrO_2 mixed oxides are widely used in the three-way catalysts due to their unique reversible oxygen storage and release capacity. Large surface area, high oxygen storage capacity and good thermal stability of cerium zirconium mixed oxides are the key properties for the automotive catalysts so as to meet the strict emission regulations. In this work, alumina modified CeZrLaNd mixed oxides were prepared by a co-precipitation method. The effects of moisture in precursor and inert N2 atmosphere during calcinations on the structure and properties were investigated by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) surface area measurements, X-ray diffraction(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction(H_2-TPR), oxygen storage capacity(OSC), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The results show that the moisture in precursor during calcinations increases the crystal grain size of the cerium zirconium mixed oxides, improving the thermal stability. And the aged surface area of sample after being calcined at1000 ℃ for 4 h reaches 68.8 m^2/g(5.7% increase compared with the common sample). The inert N2 atmosphere endows a great pore-enlarging effect, which leads to high fresh surface area of 148.9 m2/g(13.5% increase compared with the common sample) and big pore volume of 0.5705 mL/g. The redox and oxygen storage capacity are also improved by inert N2 atmosphere with high OSC value of 241.06μmolO_2/g(41.3% increase compared with the common calcination), due to the abundant formation of the crystal defects and oxygen vacancies.

Inhibitory Effect of LPS on the Proliferation of Oligodendrocyte precursor Cells through the Notch Signaling Pathway inIntrauterine Infection-induced Rats

Periventricular white matter injury (PWMI)is very common in survivors of premature birth,and the final outcomes are a reduction in myelinated neurons leading to white matter hypomyelination.How and (or) why the oligodendrocyte lineage develops abnormally and myelination is reduced is a hot topic in the field.This study focuses on the effect of intrauterine inflammation on the proliferation of oligodendrocyte lineage cells and the underlying mechanisms.Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)(300μg/kg)was intraperitoneally injected into pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats at embryonic days 19 and 20 to establish a rat model of intrauterine infection-induced white matter injury.Corpus callosum tissues were collected at postnatal day 14(P14)to quantify the number of oligodendrocytes,the number and proliferation of oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs), and the expression of myelin proteins (MBP and PLP).Furthermore,the expression of Writ and Notch signaling-related proteins was analyzed.The results showed that the number of oligodendrocytes in the corpus callosum tissues of LPS-treated rats was reduced,and the expression levels of myelinating proteins were down-regulated.Further analysis showed that the Notch signaling pathway was down-regulated in the LPS-treated group.These results indicate that intrauterine LPS may inhibit the proliferation of OPCs by down-regulating the Notch rather than the Writ signaling pathway,leading to hypomyelination of white matter.

Synthesis via precursor Method and Shape Evolution of Basic Magnesium Carbonate

Basic magnesium carbonate(4 MgCO3·Mg(OH)2·4 H2 O) with spherical-like structure was synthesized through precursors thermal decomposition. The precursor of magnesium carbonate trihydrates(MgCO3·3 H2 O) was synthesized by brine and ammonium bicarbonate, and the thermal decomposition conditions were investigated in detail. The obtained particulate was characterized using SEM, XRD and laser particle analyzer. The result showed that it was easy to obtain spherical-like 4 MgCO3·Mg(OH)2·4 H2 O by precursor thermal decomposition at 80~100 ℃ with thermal decomposition time 90 min, stirring time 15 min and the liquid initial concentration 0.1 mol/L, while rod-like 4 MgCO3·Mg(OH)2·4 H2 O with a surface of "house of card" structure was more likely to be obtained at low temperature(55 ℃), and rosette-like products were obtained at a little higher temperature(80 ℃) by direct synthesis.
