VELOCITY PROFILE OF SEDIMENT-LADEN OPEN CHANNEL FLOW

A detailed literature survey of the existing models for vertical velocity profiles of open channel flow for both clear water and sediment-laden water is performed. It is found that flow resistance and suspended sediment particles affect velocity profiles significantly. The Karman constant K of the logarithmic law is equal to 0.41 near the channel bed but far from the bed the value will change due to flow resistance and sediment suspension. The exponent of the power law velocity profile is also affected by those two factors. A general logarithmic law and a general power law for the description of velocity profiles arc proposed herein and verified by the experiment data presented by several investigators. Satisfactory results were obtained.

Correlation-based iterative clustering methods for time course data:The identification of temporal gene response modules for influenza infection in humans

Many pragmatic clustering methods have been developed to group data vectors or objects into clusters so that the objects in one cluster are very similar and objects in different clusters are distinct based on some similarity *** availability of time course data has motivated researchers to develop methods,such as mixture and mixed-effects modelling approaches,that incorporate the temporal information contained in the shape of the trajectory of the ***,there is still a need for the development of time-course clustering methods that can adequately deal with inhomogeneous clusters(some clusters are quite large and others are quite small).Here we propose two such methods,hierarchical clustering(IHC)and iterative pairwise-correlation clustering(IPC).We evaluate and compare the proposed methods to the Markov Cluster Algorithm(MCL)and the generalised mixed-effects model(GMM)using simulation studies and an application to a time course gene expression data set from a study containing human subjects who were challenged by a live influenza *** identify four types of temporal gene response modules to influenza infection in humans,i.e.,single-gene modules(SGM),small-size modules(SSM),mediumsize modules(MSM)and large-size modules(LSM).The LSM contain genes that perform various fundamental biological functions that are consistent across *** SSM and SGM contain genes that perform either different or similar biological functions that have complex temporal responses to the virus and are unique to each *** show that the temporal response of the genes in the LSM have either simple patterns with a single peak or trough a consequence of the transient stimuli sustained or state-transitioning patterns pertaining to developmental cues and that these modules can differentiate the severity of disease ***,the size of gene response modules follows a power-law distribution with a consistent exponent across all subjects,which reveals the pre

Metallogenic Districts of Yangtze Cratonic Rim at the Edge of Chaos

Combining the science of complexity with ore geology, the author puts forward a new theory of metallogenesis: “complexity and self organized criticality of metallogenic dynamic systems”, and three fundamental theories are raised for it. The ore genesis and regularity of ore formation of four metallogenic districts around the Yangtze craton in China are studied with this theory. It is found that “metallogenic districts of Yangtze cratonic rim are all at the edge of chaos”. This proposition is expounded by four determinative criteria of the edge of chaos for metallogenic districts of Yangtze cratonic rim.

Network Analysis of Research Project Members in Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research in Japan

The researcher network that appeared in research projects funded by the Japanese government was analyzed. Several static and dynamic network analysis methods were applied to the data for 20 years to explore the fine structure of the researcher’s network for grants. Our analysis shows that the long-term trend of researchers’ group sizes has become smaller, particularly rapidly decreasing in recent years. Some findings on researcher behavior in joining a project have also been reported.

＜正＞In this paper we propose a simple model of multi-organizations to analyze the dynamic behaviors of macro-economic *** this model,three mechanisms are included:1) congeneric firms are mainly competition against each other,and inhomogeneous firms are mainly synergic with each other;2) the Gibrat’s law of Proportionate Effect is followed, that is,the expected value of the growth rate of a business firm is proportional to its current size in its own industry and 3) new firms continually enter the *** find that the firm size distribution in its own industry displays heavy tails or power-law,where the power is determined by the quotient of demand factor and supply factor of this *** contrasts the Gaussian distribution predicted by Gibrat’s law of proportionate effect.

One of the main aims in systems biology is to gain knowledge about direct regulation effects among numerous cellular *** this paper,two algorithms are proposed to estimate direct causal regulations from noisy time series experimental *** incorporating a so-called power law which is an important network structural characteristic of most large scale cellular networks,a likelihood function is developed and minimized by three *** essential step is determining which chemical elements have direct regulation effects on a prescribed element,when the number of direct regulations is known. To avoid the inherent combinatorial computation problem,two procedures are proposed yo give analytical solutions about the positions of these *** addition,the possibility of integrating information of time series and steady state data into network inferences is also investigated in this paper,and finally two improved algorithms are developed based on these two kinds of data. These algorithms have been applied to many artificially constructed networks with 101 *** with total least squares(TLS) method,which is widely used in noisy measurement data case,numerical simulations show that,the false positive errors can be significantly reduced and estimation accuracy can be extremely ***,the performances of improved algorithms are greatly better than the time series data based algorithms.

本文采用语料库证据支持的方法,重点考察了科技英语的篇际词汇增长模型。研究表明,现有的数学模型(Brunet模型,Guiraud模型,Tuldava模型及Herdan模型)不能精确地描述科技英语词汇增长曲线。通过对幂函数和对数函数的比较分析,本文构建了新的词汇增长模型,并应用此模型推导出科技英语的理论词汇增长曲线及其95%双向置信区间。本研究对EFL教学有显著意义。新的词汇增长模型可用于推断任意给定语篇的词汇量以及生成任意词汇量需要的语篇数。
