Introduction: Respiratory muscle strength can be assessed by static mouth measurements of maximal inspiratory pressure (Pimax) and maximal expiratory pressure (Pemax). Impaired respiratory muscle strength is common in neuromuscular and obstructive pulmonary disease such as Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Maximal respiratory pressures can easily be measured with a portable manometer on the bedside and in the community. Our objective was to compare maximal respiratory pressures as measured by standard laboratory equipment and the portable mouth pressure meter Micro RPM. Methods: Pimax and Pemax were assessed in 296 healthy subjects and patients with CF with the Micro RPM and standard laboratory equipment. The Micro RPM measures and digitally displays maximal respiratory pressures after averageing over a one second period. Standard laboratory equipment consisted of a differential pressure transducer, whose amplified signals were analyzed by Lab-VIEW software. Each subject performed at least five reproducible maneuvers after familiarizing with the equipment. Results: The Micro RPM accurately measured maximal inspiratory and maximal expiratory pressures both in healthy individuals as well as in patients with CF. Mean difference (standard deviation) of the methods was 1.37 (17.73) cm H2O for Pimax maneuvers and 1.84 (9.09) cm H2O for Pemax maneuvers. Conclusions: The Micro RPM can relia-bly and accurately measure maximal respiratory mouth pressures and its use could be applied both in the clinical and the research setting.

Whiteflies cause problems in vegetable production on a global scale. The primary worldwide whitefly pest is Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius). Insecticides are commonly used to mitigate the whitefly problem in vegetable crops. In limited-resource crop production, operator-carried spray applicators are commonly used for pesticide treatments. Three single-nozzle operator-carried spray applicators were assessed for their efficacies for whitefly (B. tabaci) control on summer squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) in Egypt. Each knapsack spray equipment was evaluated with five biorational and conventional insecticides. Counts of whitefly nymphs (first, second, third and fourth instars) on leaf samples were taken on 3, 9, 15 and 21 days after treatments with the insecticides. Nymphal mortality varied about 10% among the three spray equipment treatments. The Economy Micro Ulva sprayer resulted in significantly more nymphal mortality as compared with the Arimitsu sprayer and the CZP-3 sprayer, respectively. All insecticides greatly suppressed the whitefly populations;mean mortality ranged from 73% to 95% for all nymphs combined by day for a given treatment. These results provide pest management practitioners with performance assessment of the three operator-carried pesticide applicators for whitefly management with selected foliar insecticides.

The determination of the impacts of marble mining on the environment in Igarra was carried out via the analysis of soil and water samples as geological medium. Seven soil samples, ten water samples and five rock samples were collected. The samples collected were subjected to petro-graphic and geochemical analysis. The mean concentration of metals in soil from Ekpeshi were Cd (3.254 mg/kg), Co (786.554 mg/kg), Cu (12.911 mg/kg), Ni (18.942 mg/kg), Pb (5.5 mg/kg), and Zn (28.457 mg/kg) while the concentrations of the water samples collected from streams, taps and wells were Cd (0.116 mg/kg), Co (15.225 mg/kg), Cu (0.542 mg/kg), Ni (0.276 mg/kg), Pb (0.486 mg/kg), and Zn (0.742 mg/kg). Lead (Pb) showed high concentration of (0.486 mg/kg), Ni (0.276 mg/kg) and Cd (0.116 mg/kg) as against acceptable limits of 0.01mg/l, 0.02 mg/l (NIS) and 0.07 mg/l (WHO) 0.003 mg/l respectively, while in soil it showed high concentration of Cd (3.254 mg/kg) compared to the acceptable limit of 0.8 mg/kg set by the Dutch Standard limit for soil. Lead, Nickel and Cadmium are found to be in high concentration in both surface and underground water, and this calls for treating water in the study area before it’s used as drinking water via drilling water boreholes by the mining and processing companies operating in the area as a form of corporate social responsibility. Also, the provisions in the mining act should holistically be implemented to safe life and health of the populace of the immediately surroundings.
