population parameters and dynamic pool models of commercial fishes in the Beibu Gulf, northern South China Sea

Length-frequency data of eight commercial fish species in the Beibu Gulf （Golf of Tonkin）, northern South China Sea, were collected during 2006-2007. Length-weight relationships and growth and mortality parameters were analyzed using FiSAT II software. Five species had isometric growth, two species had negative allometric growth, and one species had positive allometric growth. Overall, the exploitation rates of the eight species were lower in 2006 2007 than in 1997-1999： for four species （Saurida tumbil, Saurida undosquamis, Argyrosomus macrocephalus, and Nemipterus virgatus） it was lower in 2006-2007 than in 1997 1999, for two species （Parargyrops edita and Trichiurus haumela） it remained the same, and for the other two species （Trachurus japonicus and Decapterus maruadsi） it was higher in 2006~007 than in 1997-1999. The exploitation rates might have declined because of the decline in fishing intensity caused by high crude oil prices. The optimum exploitation rate, estimated using Beverton-Holt dynamic pool models, indicated that although fishes in the Beibu Gulf could sustain high exploitation rates, the under-size fishes at first capture resulted in low yields. To increase the yield per recruitment, it is more effective to increase the size at first capture than to control fishing effort.

Correlative Analysis between Contents of Nutrients and Secondary Substances in Damaged Pinus massoniana Needles and population parameters of Dendrolimus kikuchii(Lepidoptera:Lasiocampidae)

In order to explore the effects of chemical substances changes in damaged masson pine （Pinus massoniana） needles on population dynamics of Dendroli- mus kikuchii, D. kikuchii larvae were reat~ with P. massoniana needles with different damage degrees （mild, moderate and severe）, and its population parame- ters and contents of nutrients and secondary substances in damaged P. massoniana needles were measured, and the integrated correlation coefficient was adopted for data analysis. The results showed that with the damage degree aggravating, flavones in needles increased accordingly, while contents of soluble sugars, polysaeeha- rides and proteins decreased. The average developmental duration and mortality of D. kikuchii larvae increased with the damage degree increasing. No significant correlation was found between the changes in contents of tannins or total phenols and the developmental duration or mortality of each instar larvae. There were signif- icant direct and integrated correlations between contents of nutrients and secondary substances of P. massoniana needles and the developmental duration or mortality of each instar larvae except the 6＇h instar larvae. With the damage degree increasing, all parameters of D. kikuchii population including body weight of the 7~ instar larvae, average feeding capacity of larvae, pupal weight, pupation rate, female ratio and fecundity decreased. No significant correlation was found between the changes in contents of tannins or total phenols and population parameters of D. kikuchii larvae. The results suggest that the contents of nutrients and secondary sub- stances in P. ,mssoniana needles dramatically influenced the population parameters of D. kikuchii, and the importance from high to low successively was soluble sugars 〉 proteins 〉 polysaccharides 〉 flavones. Contents of tannins and total phenols seemed to have little influence.

Effects of alternating temperatures on development and reproduction of the armyworm,Mythimna separata (Walker)

Effects of cycling and constant temperature on development and reproduction of the armyworm, Mythimna separata (Walker) were investigated by rearing the insects on the artificial diet under temperatures covering low(16-24℃ vs. 20 ℃ ), medial(20-28℃ vs. 24℃ ) and high(24-32 ℃ vs. 28 ℃) regions. In the low region, all the immature stages of the insect developed significantly faster under alternating temperatures than at corresponding constant temperatures. For the medial region, their development was little affected by variable temperatures. For the high region, developmental durations tended to be longer under cycling temperatures except egg *** fecundities of the adult moths markedly increased under cycling temperatures as compared with those at respective constant temperature in all *** reasons for effect of alternating temperatures on insect development are discussed in some details.

以全麦粉和酵母粉（10：1）为饲料，分别在8种温度（17．5－35℃）及5种相对湿度（50％－90％RH）条件下系统地研究了嗜虫书虱的生物学特性，获得了其在不同温、湿度组合情况下的生长发育、生存和繁殖的一系列特性和参数。结果表明，在75％RH、20－35℃范围内，世代发育历期在71．9－21．7天之间。世代发育起点温度和有效积温分别为15．7℃和460．7日·度。各虫态及世代存活率均以27．5℃时最高，温度过高或过低均不利于该虫存活。成虫平均寿命在64．4－32．4天之间。每雌平均产卵量为21．1－13．9粒。在28℃条件下，较高的相对温度有利于该虫生长发育和繁殖。相对湿度低于50％或温度低于17．5℃，该虫均不能完成世代发耷。总体来看该虫生长发育、繁殖的最适温区为28－30℃，最适相对湿度在80％—90％之间并就该虫在我国分布及为害严重的原因进行了探讨。
