In this study, new polymeric adsorbents, 2 types of polystyrene-block-poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PSN, structure of hydrophobic core and hydrophilic shell), were developed and applied for removal of organic pollutants from wastewater. Encapsulation of organic pollutants by the polystyrene-block-poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PSN) resulted in increasing hydrophobicity of the polystyrene with abundant hydrophobic spaces within the amphiphilic block copolymer. The encapsulation mechanism of BTEX by PSN was investigated and found to be mainly attributable to the Van der Waals interactions between the aromatic ring of BTEX and the hydrophobic core of PSN. Polystyrene-block-poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) showed good potential as a novel and cost effective adsorbent for application to wastewater treatment, which can be simply regenerated and reused using an external temperature changing system.

In this study, the polycondensation products of a diamine anthraquinone (1,4-diamino anthraquinone) and some aliphatic diacids with different methylene numbers were synthesised. Their UV-visible spectroscopy and thermal properties were then characterised. The synthesis was achieved by reacting equimolar solutions of the amine and the acid halides. The structure and thermal properties of the products were characterised. FT-IR Spectra of all the three products revealed the formation of amide due to the presence of strong bands at 1565 and 3390 cm?1 assignable to C=O stretching and N-H vibrations. Differential Scanning Calorimetry revealed high melting exotherms for the products. Thermogravimetry revealed moderate thermal stabilities for Poly NAM and Poly NAS and low thermal stability for Poly NAA which indicated 5.9%, 7.1% and 61.2% weight losses at 285℃, 285℃ and 374℃ for the three products respectively. The wavelengths of maximum absorbance for the dye samples are 601.5, 591 and 589 nm respectively with absorptivity coefficients (a1cm1% ) of 11640000, 11610000 and 11560000 respectively.

The aim of this work was to study the effect of UHMWPE crosslinking on wear performance. Differently treated UHMWPEs were studied by means of unidirectional and multidirectional wear tests. Unidirectional tests simulate total knee replacement and multidirectional tests simulate total hip replacement movements. The samples tested were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy in order to determine wear mechanisms that explain the dif-ferent results obtained in the uni- and multidirectional wear tests performed.

Since the early 80’s, the sea-surface microlayer (SML) has been hypothesized as being a gelatinous film. Recent studies have confirmed this characteristic, which confers properties that mediate mass and energy fluxes between ocean and atmosphere, including the emission of primary organic aerosols from marine systems. We investigated SML thickness and composition in five replicate indoor experiments between September and December 2010. During each experiment, the SML and underlying seawater were sampled from four seawater tanks: one served as control, and three were inoculated with Thalassiosira weissflogii grown in chemostats at 180, 380 and 780 ppm pCO2. We examined organic material enrichment factors in each tank, paying particular attention to gel particles accumulation such as polysaccharidic Transparent Exopolymer Particles (TEP) and the proteinaceous Coomassie Stainable Particles (CSP). While previous studies have observed carbohydrates and TEP enrichment in the microlayer, little is yet known about proteinaceous gel particles in the SML. Our experiments show that CSP dominate the gelatinous composition of the SML. We believe that the enrichment in CSP points to the importance of bacterial activity in the microlayer. Bacteria may play a pivotal role in mediating processes at the air-sea interface thanks to their exudates and protein content that can be released through cell disruption.

Cyclopolymerization has recently been developed as a specialized type of polymerization for nonconjugated diene monomer to form ring-containing ladder polymer. The free radical cyclopolymerization of 2,6-substituted 1,6-diene was investigated extensively by Marvel et al. We have reported the free radical cyclopolymerization of 4-substituted l,6-diene and some 1,5-diene, and their possible reaction mechanism was then suggested. It should not escape our attention that cyclopolymerization of acrylic anhydride by peroxide initiators yields a soluble cyclopolymer with high molecular weight and the polymeric anhydride could be hydrolysed to yield polyacrylic acid with a higher degree of crystallinity than polyacrylic acid obtained by the usual polymerization techniques.

Role of Plasma Surface Treatments on Wetting and Adhesion

There are many current and emerging wetting and adhesion issues which require an additional surface processing to enhance interfacial surface properties. Materials which are non-polar, such as polymers, have low surface energy and therefore typically require surface treatment to promote wetting of inks and coating. One way of increasing surface energy and reactivity is to bombard a polymer surface with atmospheric plasma. When the ionized gas is discharged on the polymer, effects of ablation, crosslinking and activation are produced on its surface. In this paper we will analyse the role of plasma and its use in increasing the surface energy to achieve wettability and improve adhesion of polymeric surfaces.

For the first time, this paper describes the concentration dependence of the relative dynamic viscosity coefficient of rubber suspensions and the initial viscoelastic modulus of 3D cross-linked elastomers on the maximum volume filling with solid polydisperse particles. It allows to predict the rheological and mechanical properties of the polymer compositions being developed now. In this paper, we present the first experimental study of the pole of the concurrent lines of the concentration dependence in the coordinates of the linear form. The pole validates the invariant value of the constant of the developed equation and allows the experimental determination of the maximum volume filling of polymer binders filled with separate fractions or polydisperse mixtures. The results of the study are recommended for use in developing new polymer composite materials.
