Deposition of polymer thin film Using an Atmospheric Pressure Micro-Plasma Driven by Dual-Frequency Excitation

polymer thin film deposition using an atmospheric pressure micro-plasma jet driven by dual-frequency excitations is described in this paper. The discharge process was operated with a mixture of argon （6 slm） and a small amount of acetone （0-2100 ppm）. Plasma composition was measured by optical emission spectroscopy （OES）. In addition to a large number of Ar spectra lines, we observed some spectra of C, CN, CH and C2. Through changing acetone content mixed in argon, we found that the optimum discharge condition for deposition can be characterized by the maximum concentration of carbonaceous species. The deposited film was characterized by scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS） and Fourier transform infrared （FTIR） spectroscopy. The XPS indicated that the film was mostly composed of C with trace amount of O and N elements. The FTIR suggested different carbon-containing bonds （-CHx, C=O, C=C, C-O-C） presented in the deposited film.

Temperature Controlled Lateral Pattern Formation in Confined polymer thin films

The thermal induced topography change in a model system consisting of a polymer film on a Si substrate capped by a thin metal layer has been studied by using AFM. Regular lateral patterns over large areas were observed on the surface when the system was heated to a sufficiently high temperature. 2D-FFT analysis to the AFM images indicates that the patterns are isotropic and have well defined periodicities. The periodicities of the characteristic patterns are found to depend strongly on the annealing temperature. The study of the kinetics of the formation reveals that such a topography forms almost instantaneously once the critical temperature is reached. It is suggested that this wave-like surface morphology is driven by the thermal expansion coefficient mismatch of the different layers. This method for generating regular wave-like patterns could be used as a general method for patterning various organic materials into micro/nanostructures.

Structures and Surface States of polymer Brushes in Good Solvents:Effects of Surface Interactions

The influence of the surface interaction on the mesoscopic structure of grafted polymers in good solvents has been examined. At high surface coverage, tethered polymers are in the brush state and the parabolic segment density profile is confirmed by self-consistent field theory （SCFT） calculations. It is found that this is a universal behavior for a whole range of surface interactions from complete repulsion to strong attraction. More interestingly, finite surface repulsion may lead to the maximum in the proximal layer of its segment density profile, which is significantly different from both the depletion layer of pure repulsion and the adsorbing layer of attraction. In addition to the brush state on both repulsive and attractive surfaces, three additional surface states were identified by analyzing the scaling behavior of the layer thickness of polymer brushes： the mushroom state on repulsive substrates, the dilute and the semidilute surface states on attractive substrates.

Study on the thermo-optic properties of DR1/PMMA composite

This paper reports that the thermo-optic coefficient （dn/dT） as well as thermal expansion coefficients （β） of DR1/PMMA polymer film are measured for both TE （transversal electric） and TM （transversal magnetic） polarizations by using an attenuated total reflection configuration at the wavelengths of 832nm. The thermo-optic coefficients of DR1/PMMA are negative and as high as the order of 10^-4/℃. The influences of dopant concentration, poling process and photobleaching process on the thermo-optic properties of DR1/PMMA are also investigated.

In this work, we theoretically study the droplet breakup of vacuum spray beam. We choose a pinhole nozzle, chloroform solution and chamber pressure of 10 Pa. According to the solution flowing characteristics in the nozzle, the calculated Reynolds number Re h is larger than 2320. By setting the boundary conditions, we get the distribution of velocity, flow of per unit area and the flow rate is 1160 m / s. With the assumption that the solution flow pattern in the pinhole nozzle is circular jet, we find that: 1) The flow velocity in the nozzle is very high;2) The flow regime is turbulent;3) The solution atomizes as soon as it sprays out of the nozzle;4) The spray cone angle θ is 23o . The atomization occurs immediately after the solution is sprayed out of the nozzle. The droplet break-up model was built and modified on the basis of fluctuation break-up model. The basic parameters are as follows: the density of the solution ρ l, the fluid flow Q , the nozzle velocity v0 , the droplet diameter d 0. At the site x mm away from the nozzle mouth, the mass of the evaporated droplet is m x, and the diameter is d x. It is permitted to ignore the influences of air and gravity under vacuum conditions. We can then reasonably assume that the droplets move with constant velocity. Assuming that the droplet diameter is equal, and the solution don’t volatilize, one finds the following equation ρ l Qv0 =P1. Here, P1 is the momentum of the droplets at the x point. The droplet diameter distribution is consistent with that of the maximum entropy diameter distribution. In fact, the droplets begin to volatilize immediately after breaking-up. Accounting for this factor, the droplet momentum at site of x does not accord with the law of conservation of momentum. It is thus necessary to introduce a momentum P2 representing that of the volatilized solvent. We assume that P2 and the power of the pump are in a dynamic equilibrium.
