A recent study has highlighted that chemical and plastic pollution has surpassed global boundaries and that humanity is out of the safe operating space[1].One important group of chemicals which are major contributors to this pollution are persistent organic pollutants(POPs)which are toxic,bio-accumulative and persistent in multiple environmental matrices and therefore accumulate on our planet,in biota and humans.This is documented by a review in this special issue[2]giving an overview of dioxin and PCB contamination in eggs around industrial emitters and other pollution sources in 4 continents which found that approximately 90%of eggs from free-range chicken are unfit for consumption considering the EU regulatory limits and the tolerable intake set by FAO/WHO[2].Considering that some of these sources are widespread in some of countries such as open burning of plastics in landfills/dump sites and backyard burning or combusting plastics as a fuel source in boilers and incinerators as well as secondary metal industries,the overall contaminated area is huge and is increasing and will likely stay contaminated for decades or even centuries[2].

Farmers are the main land managers, and their production decisions crucially affect crop outputs and farmland preservation.Understanding the motivations and factors underlying farmers’ decision making is a fundamental to implementation polices of government.This study analyzed factors that influence farmers’ choice of corn reduction under the China’s new agriculture policy in the ‘Liandaowan’ areas of Northeast China.This study collected data from 106 randomly selected households in 34 villages in ‘Liandaowan’ areas of Northeast China using a semi-structured questionnaire.Results showed that the Chinese corn structural adjustment plan confronted with many constraints, and most of farmers insist on planting corn.Drought and low accumulated temperature, no suitable substitution crop, farmers’ preferences, farmers’ education and age, relatively high comparative benefit of corn, the availability of machinery and technical assistance, subsidies and low family incomes all influence farmers’ choice of corn substitution.Based on our experimental results, we derived important policy implications for promoting corn structural adjustment incorporate increase crop diversity, promote soybean and corn rotation, provide adequate agricultural extension services, and increase the corn substitution subsidies and improve farmers’ income.

Research and evidence are critical for the formulation of policies and practices in support of health care.In the past two decades,the Chinese Clinical Epidemiology Network has been promoting evidence-based policy making in China.Evidence-based policy has become a major part of the government’s approach to policy making.The current article addresses the translation of evidence into health policies based on the expansion of evidence-based medicine in China.It also discusses the opportunities and challenges for certain evidence to be considered in policy making and practice in the future.

Russia is the largest neighboring country of China. Between the two countries, the resources and industry are complemented, the political mutual trust is at a high level, and trade cooperation has a broad prospect. Choosing the best regions and the best industries to strengthen investment in Russia has a major strategic significance in promoting ‘the Belt and Road Initiative’ and China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor Construction. However, the related researches are extremely limited. The investment environment is unclear, and the investment risk is unknown, which seriously restrict the investment in Russia and the trade cooperation with Russia. Our research team carried out scientific expedition, government visits and scientific research cooperation in Russia for several years, and obtained a great number of first-hand valuable data. According to the analysis on the data and Russian regional policies, this study constructed an investment environment evaluation model(ESI-PRA model), scientific assessed the investment environment for 83 subjects of federation in Russia, in terms of economic, social, infrastructure, policy, resource and accessibility, classified 4 types of investment regions, chose 3 investment priority regions, revealed the investment priority industries, demonstrated the main investment risks, and proposed the strategic policies. The research results provide direct scientific and technological support for strategic decisions, such as investment in Russia, bilateral economic and trade cooperation, and overseas layout of Chinese-funded enterprises. Moreover, it has an important practical and strategic significance for improving overseas geo-strategic interests of China and ensuring the construction of China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Corridor.

During the 21st century,policies toward agriculture,forestry,and urbanization have emerged to ensure food security,ecological restoration,and human well-being by managing land in Northeast China.However,the integrated effects and relationships of various policies are still not well understood.This study observed the land use land cover changes in Central Jilin from 2000 to 2019 and,by considering policy involvement,aimed to understand the effects and trade-offs of policies.Results showed that the cropland,including dryland and rice paddy,and the forest,including coniferous forest and deciduous forest,are dominant land types in Central Jilin.During 2000–2019,the land changed diversely,of which the main changes were the expanded dryland(+0.43 million ha),the increased deciduous forest(+22 million ha),the decreased coniferous forest(–0.08 million ha),and the expanded urban settlement(+0.04 million ha).With these changes,despite the unit grain yield showing a rising trend,the yield contribution of Central Jilin to the national total decreased.The poor cultivating structure made for the cropland expansion and reduced the implementation space of environmental restoration projects such as the Grain to Green.Thus,in Central Jilin that transits from the agri-food production zone to the eco-regulation zone,environmental projects coexisted in a trade-off manner with agricultural policies that aim to liberate agricultural productivity.In the key urban agglomerations of Central Jilin,the increase in the proportion of green space improved the thermal environment and carbon balance.The gross domestic product of the large city and its local proportion also rose.These improvements benefited from the promotion of development policies and urbanization policies at key time points.In the future,it is necessary to coordinate agricultural policies and environmental projects and promote the progress of small-and medium-sized cities to ensure the equality of regional development.This study has implications for making decisions to revital

Thrust generation is a crucial aspect of fish locomotion that depends on a variety of morphological and kinematic parameters.In this work,the kinematics of caudal fin motion of a robotic fish are optimised experimentally.The robotic fish actuates its caudal fin with flapping and rotation motion,and also measures the fin hydrodynamic force and torque.Total nine designs of the caudal fins are investigated,with three different shapes(or inclination angles)and three stiffness.The optimisation is based on a policy search(PS)algorithm,which is used to maximise the thrust-generation efficiency of the caudal fins.The authors first parametrise fin spanwise-rotation as a sinusoidal function using rotation amplitude and phase delay and test whether it is beneficial to thrust-generation efficiency.The result shows that the rotation does not contribute to the efficiency,as the efficiency is maximised at zero amplitude.Next,the authors optimise flapping amplitude and trajectory profile without fin rotation.Results show that smaller flapping amplitude results in higher efficiency and linear flapping trajectories are preferred over sinusoidal ones.Fins that have the highest flexibility are more efficient in thrust generation although they generate less thrust,while an inclination angle of 30°yields the most efficient fin shape.

Territorial development suitability （TDS） distribution and policy implications in the Yangtze River Basin are investigated through the use of statistical and spatial data, using the Delphi method, the analytic hierarchy process method and the comprehensive evaluation model. The distribution pattern and characteristics of TDS in the Yangtze River Basin are studied, providing a scientific basis and a decision-making reference for sustainable development of the whole basin, and promoting reasonable implementation of the Yangtze River economic belt development strategy. The results show that the overall level of development constraint is relatively high, and that high-value regions （grades V-VIII） are mainly distributed in the upper and middle reaches of the basin. The suitable development regions account for 22.95% of the total basin area, mainly including the Yangtze River Delta region, the provincial capitals, the urban agglomerations and most prefecture-level cities. The variation of TDS is significant among the upper, middle and lower reaches of the basin, and the high-value areas account for 8.24%, 35.70% and 82.97% of the total areas of the upper, middle and lower reaches, respectively. Three policy suggestions are proposed：（1） strict control of the basin development intensity, setting up an efficient and well-organized spatial development pattern, （2） implementation of different regional policies according to different functional orientations, and （3） strengthening of communication and cooperation between different regions, thus promoting integrated basin protection and development.

The Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes held its 3rd Global Summit of Research Institutes for Disaster Risk Reduction at the Disaster Prevention Research Institute,Kyoto University,Japan,19–21 March,2017.The Global Alliance seeks to contribute to enhancing disaster risk reduction(DRR) and disaster resilience through the collaboration of research organizations around the world.The summit aim was to expand the platform for bridging science and policy making by evaluating the evidence base needed to meet the expected outcomes and actions of the Sendai Framework for Disaster RiskReduction 2015–2030 and its Science and Technology Roadmap.The summit reflected the international nature of collaborative research and action.A pre-conference questionnaire filled out by Global Alliance members identified323 research projects that are indicative of current research.These were categorized to support seven parallel discussion sessions related to the Sendai Framework priorities for action.Four discussion sessions focused on research that aims to deepen the understanding of disaster risks.Three cross-cutting sessions focused on research that is aimed at the priorities for action on governance,resilience,and recovery.Discussion summaries were presentedin plenary sessions in support of outcomes for widely enhancing the science and policy of DRR.
