Recent developments in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs)and their applications in various subjects are of interest to polar *** to the harsh climate and dangerous environment,these regions pose challenges for the expedition *** countries have tested the UAV technology to support Antarctic research and *** this trend paper,we provide insightful reviews and discussions on such a prospective *** on a comprehensive literature survey,we firstly summarize the key research progress of UAV in Antarctic *** the examples of risk scenarios during the field exploration are given,after which several promising applications of the UAVs in safety guarantee are *** particular,we present a case of site-selection for the Chinese first ice sheet airfield,using the data collected in the 34th Chinese National Antarctic research Expedition(CHINARE).In the end,we highlight the unique value of the UAVs in the popularization of polar science before concluding the advantages and *** their excellent performance,we expect more innovations for UAV’s applications in the following Antarctic expeditions.

India's Arctic Policy:a critical appraisal

After much procrastination,the Indian government has released its much awaited and delayed Arctic Policy document on 17 March 22 with the theme being“Building a Partnership for Sustainable Development”.It has been 15 years since India commenced its scientific research in the Arctic region and this policy document,charting out the direction that India aspires to assume will be keenly examined by the diverse stakeholders of the *** being an Arctic Council observer for nearly a decade,India continues to view the Arctic from a mere scientific prism and yet again missed on the opportunity to elucidate her geo-economic,geostrategic,economic and geopolitical aspirations in the hugely vital *** is no gainsaying that the research bases discreetly also act as pillars of geopolitical engagement and indirectly this scientific diplomacy ushers in peace and prevent conflict situations yet a holistic national policy enunciating a roadmap and vision for dealing in a region which has eight sovereign states,thirteen sovereign states as observers,various intergovernmental and inter-parliamentarian outfits,NGOs and a complex governance structure was much awaited.

Outreach channels for polar science:an expedition to Kerguelen Islands as a case study

polar science outreach is strongly needed, because besides promoting the utility of polar studies for society as a whole, it can generate public demand for new projects and expeditions. The dissemination of polar discoveries should be reinforced in countries without polar territories and for which polar science might not be a priority. In this pilot study （N =182 participants） we have contrasted the opinions of polar scientists （French, Belgian, British, Canadian, Australian, German, Italian and Spanish researchers） with those of a potentially interested public （graduate students of pedagogy and biology）, in order to assess if the communication channels employed by polar researchers to make their results public align with those used by non-polar experts for learning about polar discoveries. The results revealed that scientific publications and presentations were considered a priority by the researchers, and these scientific communication channels were preferentially employed. Only a minority of researchers thought that non-scientific publications might be a good communication resource. In contrast, both groups of students, which considered polar research important but not a top priority, employed the Internet as their main channel for information about polar discoveries. Students assessed the use of polar discoveries as positive for educational purposes at both Primary and Secondary levels. The information presently received by students was perceived as being too generalist and the main suggestions to improve outreach in this field, in addition to the use of Internet, were more rapid dissemination of new discoveries.
