Research progress in assessment and strategies for sustainable food system within planetary boundaries

Meeting the increasing food demand in a manner that ensures both resources and environmental sustainability poses a global challenge.The conceptual framework of planetary boundaries(PBs)has emerged as a crucial reference in the study of sustainable food system,with specific focuses on key dimensions such as land use change,freshwater use,nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)cycles,and greenhouse gas(GHG)emissions.In this study,we summarized the threshold applications of PBs in sustainable food system research at both the global and national(China)scales.Based on these thresholds,we evaluated the sustainability conditions of the food system,considering resources such as cropland,freshwater,N and P applications,as well as environmental impacts including N and P losses,and GHG emissions.In addition,we explored the impacts of single or combined management strategies on sustainable food systems.These strategies included dietary changes,improvements in technologies and management,reductions in food loss and waste,and optimization in agricultural production distribution.Finally,we outlined future research directions in sustainable food system,including enhancing research on the interaction mechanisms among PBs elements within food systems,conducting downscaling studies of PBs elements at national and regional levels,and ensuring the rationality of policy-making for sustainable food systems in China.This study can provide a theoretical foundation and strategies guidance for sustainable food system and agricultural land use management in the future both globally and in China.

Resilient and Inclusive Prosperity within planetary boundaries

The current model of economic growth generated unprecedented increases in human wealth and prosperity during the 19th and 2Oth centuries. The main mechanisms have been the rapid pace of technological and social innovation, human capital accumulation, and the conversion of resources and natural capital into more valuable forms of produced capital. However, there is evidence emerging that this model may be approaching environmental limits and planetary boundaries, and that the conversion of natural capital needs to slow down rapidly and then be reversed Some commentators have asserted that in order for this to occur, we will need to stop growing altogether and, instead, seek prosperity without growth. Others argue that environmental concerns are low-priority luxuries to be contemplated once global growth has properly returned to levels observed prior to the 2008 financial crisis. A third group argues that there is no trade-off and, instead,, promotes green growth： the （politically appealing） idea is that we can simultaneously grow and address our environmental problems. This paper provides a critical perspective on this debate and suggests that asubstantial researc＇h agenda is required to come to grips with these challenges. One place to start is with the relevant metrics： measures of per-capitawealth, and, eventually, quantitative measures of prosperity, alongside a dashboard of other sustainability indicators. A public andpoliticalfocus on wealth （a stock）, and its annual changes, could realistically complement the current focus on market-based gross output as measured by GDP （a flow）. This could have important policy implications, but deeper changes to governance and business models will be required.

Earth’s Politicians have agreed a target to cap global warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels.While the agreement of such a target is a laudable achievement,one has to be wondering how we will achieve this.What does sustainability actually mean and how do we measure it? And when will we know this goal has been achieved? Put more succinctly:what needs to happen in the economy to help us stay within the target? The promise of clever engineering to solve the problem was made many years ago but it hasn’t materialized.A key ingredient to the industrial success of our economy is the freedom that entrepreneurs and business owners have to create products that serve the wishes of society.No one wants this freedom of expression and access to such products to be curbed,but a brake of some sort may need to be applied.This paper investigates the fundamental "missing link" that would enable people to understand the environmental impact of their economic/consumption activities.It posits that what is missing is an environmental accounting system that enables all economic actors to easily and therefore actively engage in a cogent sustainability solution.Such a solution would link economic activity to planetary boundaries.Before any such global aspiration can be contemplated however,we would need a universally agreed metric,or system of metrics,in order to communicate effectively.A universally applicable ecological certificate is proposed.It is based on the existing scientific method of life cycle analysis;extending an existing sub metric with a vital missing component that could then behave like a global ecological "currency".

Leveraging the metacoupling framework for sustainability science and global sustainable development

Sustainability science seeks to understand human-nature interactions behind sustainability challenges,but has largely been place-based.Traditional sustainability efforts often solved problems in one place at the cost of other places,compromising global sustainability.The metacoupling framework offers a conceptual foundation and a holistic approach to integrating human-nature interactions within a place,as well as between adjacent places and between distant places worldwide.Its applications show broad utilities for advancing sustainability science with profound implications for global sustainable development.They have revealed effects of metacoupling on the performance,synergies,and trade-offs of United Nations Sustainable D evelopment Goals(SDGs) across borders and across local to global scales;untangled complex interactions;identified new network attributes;unveiled spatio-temporal dynamics and effects of metacoupling;uncovered invisible feedbacks across metacoupled systems;expanded the nexus approach;detected and integrated hidden phenomena and overlooked issues;re-examined theories such as Tobler’ s First Law of Geography;and unfolded transformations among noncoupling,coupling,decoupling,and recoupling.Results from the applications are also helpful to achieve SDGs across space,amplify benefits of ecosystem restoration across boundaries and across scales,augment transboundary management,broaden spatial planning,boost supply chains,empower small agents in the large world,and shift from place-based to flow-based governance.Key topics for future research include cascading effects of an event in one place on other places both nearby and far away.Operationalizing the framework can benefit from further tracing flows across scales and space,uplifting the rigor of causal attribution,enlarging toolboxes,and elevating financial and human resources.Unleashing the full potential of the framework will generate more important scientific discoveries and more effective solutions for global justice and sustainable development.

承载能力是资源环境领域持续近两个世纪的经典命题，其概念与研究框架不断被更新，但始终聚焦在人地矛盾与可持续性。本文构建了人地关系分析框架，系统解析国外资源环境承载能力研究演化过程，通过国外趋势与国内外对比分析，提出中国资源环境承载能力研究重点方向。研究发现：①国外承载能力概念根植于(新)马尔萨斯主义理论，由资源供给、环境污染、生物圈退化等矛盾扩展为人地关系系统性矛盾，经历了资源承载能力(始于19世纪)、环境承载能力(始于20世纪70年代)、生态系统承载能力(始于20世纪90年代)、自然系统承载能力(始于21世纪10年代)4个研究阶段；②承载能力在国外不同学科领域具有不同的概念内涵，即使在同一学科领域也可能存在不同应用场景与适用范围，且由于挂钩政治经济学理论，因技术进步、市场机制与时空有限性等产生争议，因此其概念讨论与使用需加以约束和明确；③当前中国承载能力研究与国外几乎同步，其优势在于人地关系整体性与系统性的区域尺度研究，但在全球尺度、自然与社会科学理论方法融合等方面仍有对接和追赶空间。本文建议围绕学科融合与理论、尺度效应与机理、模型—数据融合与集成、不同空间单元与典型类型区应用、政策体系与机制等方面进行重点研究，继续深化创新中国特色承载能力研究与应用。
