Structural characteristics of electrohydrodynamic jets induced by a blade-plane actuator subjected to highly non-uniform electric fields:Parametric investigation through the particle image velocimetry techniques

This study set out to systematically investigate the structural characteristics of plane electrohydrodynamic jets through the particle image velocimetry(PIV)techniques.Due to the wide range of applied voltages and electrode gaps under various experimental conditions,an assessment of the image quality and a statistical analysis of the velocity fields are first performed to ensure the validity of the PIV measurements,which were originally applied purely to fluid mechanics.The results indicate that the time interval between two consecutive images should be pre-adjusted to reduce the number of uncorrelated vector fields.Moreover,the minimum number of instantaneous fields should be achieved for an accurate calculation of the time-averaged fields.An equivalent electric field criterion adapted to the asymmetric electrode configuration is defined to find similarities in flow structures under different voltage and electrode gap conditions.As the applied electric field increases,three injection regimes are identified and the current increases almost linearly,indicating a large conduction current component.The decrease in charge density due to recombination proves to be relevant in all cases of this study.Analogous to the parametric analysis approach for classical jets and thermal plumes,the evolution of the coefficients of axial velocity,half-width and turbulence intensity are investigated.

Two-dimensional metallic tantalum ditelluride with an intrinsic basal-plane activity for oxygen reduction:A microkinetic modeling study

Two-dimensional(2D) materials have exhibited great potential for replacing costly Pt for oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) because of their distinctive structural features and high pre-site activity.However,their performance is generally hindered by the limited density of active sites(e.g.,at the layer edges).Although they feature a high exposure of surface sites,these sites are typically inert for ORR.Herein,through density functional theory calculations,we propose a promising ORR catalyst candidate,a 2D TaTe_(2) nanosheet,which has an intrinsic high basal-plane activity.Both of the thermodynamic and kinetic processes are explored,which demonstrates that the basal-plane Te sites of the TaTe_(2) nanosheet have great potential for facilitating ORR.Specifically,we construct a microkinetic model of ORR proceeding on TaTe_(2),which unveils its dynamic intermediate coverage under different electrode potentials and identifies the dominating associative pathway.The theoretical half-wave potential of TaTe_(2) is predicted to be 0.87 V,which exceeds those of the well-established Pt(111) and Fe–N–C single-atom catalysts computed at the same level.This study not only presents the first 2D,non-Pt ORR catalyst candidate with an intrinsic basal-plane activity but also offers a rational methodology for unveiling the mechanism/activity of ORR and other electrochemical reactions.

Detecting intersegmental plane in thoracoscopic segmentectomy using infrared thermography

To the Editor:Segmentectomy is an effective surgical method to cure early lung cancer.Segmentectomy which is designed precisely can preserve the pulmonary function to the maximal level with comparable post-operative survival rate.However,there are still some factors such as surgical experience,anatomy familiarity,and intersegmental plane identification,influencing the application of segmentectomy.Identifying the intersegmental plane is an important intra-operative procedure for successful lung segmentectomy.Currently,there are several methods used by surgeons,including(1)inflation-deflation:displaying the border between inflated and deflated lung segments;(2)injection of indocyanine green by an intravenous or intrabronchial route.These methods have obvious shortcomings:the"inflation-deflation"method needs about 10 to 15 minutes of intra-operative time,which reduces operation efficiency and increases patient risk;injection of indocyanine helps to identify the intersegmental plane but there are risks of toxicity and allergies associated with indocyanine.

Ventricular puncture is a common neurosurgical procedure,which is usually performed freehand using body surface anatomic landmarks as targeting references.[1,2]However,it is reported that the failure rate of freehand lateral ventricle puncture could be as high as 43%in traumatic brain injury cases if body surface anatomic landmarks are used as targeting references,[3]and the occurrence of hemorrhages associated with ventricular puncture could reach 16.2%.[4]Classic puncture sites,such as Kocher point,are helpful in improving the success rate of ventricular puncture.However,it is still risky to perform freehand puncture with classic puncture sites.Several causes could lead to this issue,including the following:(1)Individual patients have different conditions;a puncture approach suitable for all patients might not be possible.(2)Selection of puncture approach is largely dependent on the judgment of the surgeon,because the puncture approach does not usually fall on the coronal,sagittal,or axial images of the regular computed tomography(CT)scan;surgeons need to use spatial imagination based on CT images to design the ventricular puncture trajectory(VPT),which could lead to errors.(3)In freehand puncture,directional deviations could occur easily without the guidance of a frame as a fixed space reference to the puncture path.

Role of Dipole Jet in Inclined Stroke plane Kinematics of Insect Flight

The two-dimensional(2D)inclined stroke plane kinematics of insect wing is studied for various stroke plane angles using the Immersed Boundary(IB)solver.The numerical results revealed the dominant lift enhancement mechanisms for this class of flows.The generated dipole was analyzed to find the maximum velocity,inclination and spread.The analysis of these dipole characteristics for the different stroke plane angles exposed the alternate method to study the vertical force variation with the stroke plane angles.Lift enhancement mechanisms and dipole characteristics complement the high vertical force coefficient for the stroke plane angle of 60?commonly used by dragonflies during hover.The location of the dipole identified a region of influence around the wing and demonstrated the role of the dipole jet in multi-body dynamics and wall effects.

The aim of this paper is to study the effects of rotation and magnetic field on the plane vibrations in a transversely isotropic material of an infinite hollow cylinder.The natural frequency of the plane vibrations in the case of harmonic vibrations has been obtained.The natural frequencies are calculated numerically and the effects of rotation and magnetic field are discussed.The numerical results obtained have been illustrated graphically to understand the behavior of frequency equation with different values of frequencyωunder effects the rotation and magnetic field.Comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of the rotation and magnetic field.The results indicate that the effect of rotation and magnetic field are very pronounced.

PatchMatch Filter-Census:A slanted-plane stereo matching method for slope modelling application

Image matching is a well-studied problem in computer vision.Conventional image matching is solved using image feature matching algorithms,and later deep learning techniques are also applied to tackle the problem.Here,a slope-modelling framework is proposed by adopting the image matching techniques.First,image pairs of a slope scene are captured and camera calibration as well as image rectification are performed.Then,PatchMatch Filter(PMF-S)and PWC-Net techniques are adapted to solve the matching of image pairs.In the proposed PatchMatch Filter-Census(PMF-Census),slanted-plane modelling,image census transform and gradient difference are employed in matching cost formulation.Later,nine matching points are manually selected from an image pair.Matching point pairs are further used in fitting a transformation matrix to relate the matching between the image pair.Then,the transformation matrix is applied to obtain a ground truth matching image for algorithm evaluation.The challenges in this matching problem are that the slope is of a homogenous region and it has a slanted-surface geometric structure.In this work,it is found out that the error rate of the proposed PMF-Census is significantly lower as compared with the PWC-Net method and is more suitable in this slope-modelling task.In addition,to show the robustness of the proposed PMF-Census against the original PMF-S,further experiments on some image pairs from Middlebury Stereo 2006 dataset are conducted.It is demonstrated that the error percentage by the proposed PMF-Census is reduced significantly especially in the low-texture and photometric distorted region,in comparison to the original PMF-S algorithm.This further verifies the suitability of the PMF-Census in modelling the outdoor low-texture slope scene.

Numerical study on turbulent mixed convection in a vertical plane channel using hybrid RANS/LES and LES models

Two Delayed-Detached Eddy Simulation(DDES) models, and a Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) model are used to investigate the turbulent flows and mixed convection between a hot plate and a cold plate via the software FLUENT. The two DDES models include Production-limited DDES(PL-DDES) and Improved DDES(IDDES) models.The Wall-Adapting Local Eddy-Viscosity(WALE) model is the used LES model. The numerical computations are performed at Reynolds number Reb= 4494 and different Richardson numbers Ri = 0.025, 0.048, 0.1. The comparing data is from the Direct Numerical Simulation(DNS) at Reb= 4494 and Ri = 0.048. The comparison reveals that the two DDES models have better performance in predicting time-averaged parameters than the WALE model in the aiding flow. The best predicted time-averaged results are obtained by the PL-DDES model in the opposing flow. Furthermore, the results of different Ri obtained by the PL-DDES model agree well with the DNS data.

Mechanically resilient,alumina-reinforced carbon nanotube arrays for in-plane shock absorption in micromechanical devices

Microelectromechanical systems(MEMS)are of considerable interest due to their compact size and low power consumption when used in modern electronics.MEMS devices intrinsically incorporate three-dimensional(3D)microstructures for their intended operations;however,these microstructures are easily broken by mechanical shocks accompanying high-magnitude transient acceleration,inducing device malfunction.Although various structural designs and materials have been proposed to overcome this limit,developing a shock absorber for easy integration into existing MEMS structures that effectively dissipates impact energy remains challenging.Here,a vertically aligned 3D nanocomposite based on ceramic-reinforced carbon nanotube(CNT)arrays is presented for in-plane shock-absorbing and energy dissipation around MEMS devices.This geometrically aligned composite consists of regionally-selective integrated CNT arrays and a subsequent atomically thick alumina layer coating,which serve as structural and reinforcing materials,respectively.The nanocomposite is integrated with the microstructure through a batch-fabrication process and remarkably improves the in-plane shock reliability of a designed movable structure over a wide acceleration range(0-12,000g).In addition,the enhanced shock reliability through the nanocomposite was experimentally verified through comparison with various control devices.
