HOW DID SUNGAI LEMBING PAVE ITS PATH TO A GREEN EVOLUTION?Sungai Lembing,a resource-based town situated in Pahang,Malaysia,has historically positioned itself as a pivotal hub in the global tin mining sector.Geologically,Sungai Lembing’s history dates back to the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras.These eras were marked by the closure of the Tethyan Ocean and the convergence of continental landmasses from the eastern part of the Gondwana continent.This complex geological background resulted in a wide variety of mineral resources.

Te-Pei Feng(冯德培,1907–1995),was a famous Chinese neurophysiologist and also one of the pioneers of modern physiological researches in China(Fig.1).He mainly studied chemical transmission at the neuromuscular junction,the biological characteristic of high and low contraction speed muscles,and the long-term potentiation(LTP)function of the brain(Jin,2007).Richard Wuyin Tsien(钱永佑)of Stanford University highly valued Feng’s contributions to neurology in China,stating that,“It is safe to say that the past and the future of neuroscience in China would be very different had professor Feng not provided leadership,by dint of organization,persuasion and strong personal example.Moreover,Feng’s remarkable life and career spanned a lengthy epoch of history,in both the world and scientific arenas。

Qi-Yi Xing(Chi-Yi Hsing,November 24th,1911–November 4th,2002)(Fig.1)was one of the remarkable scientist and educators in China.He was a pioneer for Chinese Organic Chemistry development,an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences,and a professor at the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering in Peking University.He was one of the leaders of the synthetic crystalline bovine insulin project in China and a person of outstanding talent in the teaching of organic chemistry.On the occasion of 110th anniversary of the establishment of the chemistry department at Peking University,it is also Professor Xing’s 110th birthday,and we pay tribute to his lifelong commitment to the development of organic chemistry,especially protein synthesis,and his teaching style.

Prof.Hongxi Su(苏鸿熙)was born in Tongshan,Jiangsu Province,in January of 1915(Fig.1).He is the pioneer of Chinese cardiosurgery and one of the most renowned Chinese cardiothoracic surgeons,performing the first successful intracardiac surgery under extracorporeal circulation,as well as applying artificial blood vessels in aortic-carotid artery bypass surgery,shaping the cardiosurgery landscape of China.

Dr.Chen Jiayong(Chia-Yung)was born on Feb.17,1922 in a prestigous intellectual clan at Jintang County,Sichuan Province,China.After receiving early education at the Chengdu County Middle School(now Chengdu 7th School),he was admitted as an undergraduate student to the Department of Chemical Engineering,the National Central University at the city of Chongqing from 1939 through 1943 during the Anti-Japanese War.After graduation,he continued to work as a teaching assistant for both the inorganic and organic chemistry courses.

Earlystudies inChina and theUnited States ,Fan-lan Tai(戴芳澜,1893-1973)was borm in Jiangling,Hubei Province,to a dwindling family of bureaucratic landowners(Fig.1).His grandfather,Hongxi Tai(戴洪禧),was a local township official in Longquan,Zhejiang Province.His father,Jing Tai(戴经),was a senior licentiate in the late Qing dynasty.His mother died when he was 8 years old.When he was 12,he attended the Higher Primary School affliated with Nanyang Mission College in Shanghai.He withdrew from school for a year because of his family's financial predicament.He was transferred to Wuchang Wenhua School,where he again withdrew the following year.In 1907,Fan-lan Tai and his brother entered Shanghai Aurora School,a missionary school with a focus on French teaching,laying a firm academic foundation and reinforcing his desire to continue studying.

Ko Kuei Chen(陈克恢,1898–1988)(Fig.1)was a pharmacologist who ceaselessly strove for medical research all his life.He was a pioneer of modern pharmacological research in Chinese medicine(Qian,2014).He systematically studied the pharmacological action of ephedrine and published the first paper on this topic in the world.He discovered that injecting sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate intravenously could effectively treat acute cyanide poisoning(Chen and Rose,1952).He isolated cinobufagin and cinobufotoxin from Ch’an Su,the dried venom of the Chinese toad.His research in pharmacology enriched the treasure trove of medicine.Ko Kuei Chen was a pioneer of pharmacology in Chinese medicine,and his research had epoch-making significance in the field.His pharmacological research on ephedrine set a milestone in the world medicine history.
