phasor measurement units(PMUs)are fundamental tools in the applications of modern power systems,where synchronized phasor estimations are *** accuracy and dynamic performance requirements for phasor,frequency,and rate of change of frequency(ROCOF)estimations are established in the IEEE Std.C37.118.1-2011 along with the IEEE Std.C37.118.1 a-2014,where two PMU performances are suggested:P class filters for applications requiring fast response and M class filters for applications requiring high rejection to aliased *** this paper,a methodology to design new phasor estimators that satisfy the P class and M class requirements in PMUs is *** proposed methodology is based on finite impulse response filters,brick-wall filters,and complex filter design concepts,where frequency range,time performance,harmonic rejection and out-of-band interference requirements are considered in its design.A comparative analysis using the reference model given by the IEEE Std.C37.118.1 is *** results show the effectiveness of the phasor estimators under steady-state and dynamic conditions according to the PMU standard,making them suitable tools for applications in power systems.

The synchronizing torque of a power system may be weakened by increasing installation of static power converters accompanied by renewable energy resources because they used to trade their favorable active power by synchronizing their output voltage with the one at the point of common coupling. In the circumstances, a concept of Virtual Synchronous Machine (VSM) is proposed, where the self-commutated power converters are emulating synchronous generators. This paper describes a converter control to contribute to enhancing the synchronizing torque. The proposed control is similar to the VSM but it simply realizes active power trades among power generation units including converter-based generators by modulating phase angles of their output voltages. Therefore, it can provide an effective support to regulate the system frequency where the total rated power of the converter-based generators increases as much as the one of conventional rotating generators like a microgrid. This paper especially focuses on its robustness where the number of converter-based generators is increased or they are dispersed in the power network. The effectiveness is verified by simulation study based on instantaneous values.

This paper proposes a new algorithm for High Impedance Fault (HIF) detection using phasor Measurement Unit (PMU). This type of faults is difficult to detect by over current protection relays because of low fault current. In this paper, an index based on phasors change is proposed for HIF detection. The phasors are measured by PMU to obtain the square summation of errors. Two types of data are used for error calculation. The first one is sampled data and the second one is estimated data. But this index is not enough to declare presence of a HIF. Therefore another index introduces in order to distinguish the load switching from HIF. Second index utilizes 3rd harmonic current angle because this number of harmonic has a special behaviour during HIF. The verification of the proposed method is done by different simulation cases in EMTP/MATLAB.

Synchrophasors are time-synchronized electrical measurements that represent both the magnitude and phase angle of the electrical sinusoids. Synchrophasors are measured by fast time-stamped devices called phasor measurement units(PMUs) to constitute the basis of realtime monitoring and control actions in the electric *** to its enhanced situational awareness capabilities,many applications of PMUs are presented in the literature in the past decades. This paper presents a comprehensive summary of synchrophasor technology, its architecture,optimal placement techniques and its applications in electric power transmission and distribution systems. These applications include wide-area situational awareness and monitoring, state estimation, fault location and protective relaying, islanding detection etc. This review also covers some of the existing challenges in its implementation and its potential applications.

With the advent of phasor measurement unit (PMU) technology, the grid observability has got a new dimension. This facet of technology helps in getting the real-time and dynamic scenario of the grid operations which was a remote possibility some decades before. Achieving this level of observability puts us at an advantage of responding to the system faults with reduced response time, and helps in restoring the grid stability within fraction of second. This paper demonstrates the detailed fault characterization from the PMU inputs, after illustrations from various real-time examples and different faults occurred in India. This paper tries to shed some light on areas where the accurate fault characterization can help the operator in taking the right decision for reliable grid operations.

A challenge faced by protection and planning engineers is the development and validation of accurate wind turbine generator(WTG)models to study the impact of increasing wind integration on system *** is on the experimental validation of a generic electromagnetic transient-type(EMT-type)model of aggregated WTGs or wind parks suitable for transient *** phasor domain equivalent of the generic model,suitable for protection tools based on steady-state solvers,is also *** model has been validated using two sets of actual relay records for the fault response of two wind parks consisting of Type-III WTGs and connected to115 kV and 230 kV transmission *** objective is to show that the generic model can reproduce the actual fault response in simulations,and protection engineers can obtain accurate models of wind parks using fault records.A distinctive characteristic of a WTG is its substantially different negative sequence fault current contribution compared to a synchronous *** paper shows that the generic model provides enough options to reproduce the negative sequence behavior and hence is suitable for fault studies involving negative sequence-based protection.

This paper reveals that the existing techniques have some deficiencies in the proper estimation of voltage stability margin(VSM) when applied to a power system with different load change *** problem gets worse when credible contingencies *** paper proposes a real-time wide-area approach to estimate VSM of power systems with different possible load change scenarios under normal and contingency operating *** new method is based on an artificial neural network(ANN) whose inputs are bus voltage phasors captured by phasor measurement units(PMUs) and rates of change of active power loads.A new input feature is also accommodated to overcome the inability of trained ANN in prediction of VSM under N-1 and N-2 *** a new algorithm, the number of contingencies is reduced for the effective training of *** of the proposed technique is assured through adding a random noise to input *** deal with systems with a limited number of PMUs, a search algorithm is accomplished to identify the optimal placement of *** proposed method is examined on the IEEE 6-bus and the New England 39-bus test *** show that the VSM could be predicted with less than 1% error.

Online coherence identification using dynamic time warping for controlled islanding

Controlled islanding is considered to be the last countermeasure to prevent a system-wide blackout in case of cascading *** splits the system into self-sustained islands to maintain transient stability at the expense of possible loss of *** coherence identification is critical to controlled islanding scheme as it helps identify the optimal cut-set to maintain the transient stability of the post-islanding *** paper presents a novel approach for online generator coherency identification using phasor measurement unit(PMU) data and dynamic time warping(DTW).Results from the coherence identification are used to further cluster non-generator buses using spectral clustering with the objective of minimizing power flow *** proposed approach is validated and compared to existing methods on the IEEE39-bus system and WECC 179-bus system, through which its advantages are demonstrated.

In this paper,a supervisory computer network for Borneo-Wide Power Grid system have been proposed and implemented,which includes a renewable power generation and advanced metering *** Internet-based communication network running on multi-protocol label switching(MPLS)has been implemented for a smart power grid,with the addition of the renewable energy monitoring *** centralized supervisory control and data acquisition systems(SCADA)are replaced by a wide area monitoring system(WAMS)comprising of a phasor measurement unit(PMU).The implemented communication network used advanced metering infrastructure that operates on worldwide interoperability for microwave access(WiMAX),wireless fidelity(Wi-Fi)and low power Wi-Fi,which are proposed for the distribution systems of Sarawak *** proposed wide area network(WAN)is simulated using OPNET Modeler and the results are compared with the existing WAN used by Sarawak Energy.
