Clay Mineral and Geochemical Proxies for Intense Climate Change in the permian Gondwana Rock Record from Eastern India

The clay mineral assemblages and geochemical compositions of the permian Talchir and Barakar mudstones of the Raniganj basin,India,have been used to interpret terrestrial *** Talchir Formation presents unequivocal evidences of the permian global glacial climate,and the overlying Barakar Formation with braided fluvial deposits immediately follows the glacial amelioration stage to a humid warm *** unaffected by burial diagenesis and originated from a similar source under contrasting climates are ideal for developing proxies for substantial climate ***(28.4-63.8%),illite/smectite(0-58.6%,40-80%illite),chlorite(0-53.9%),and chlorite/smectite(5.6-29.8%)constitute the clay mineral assemblage in the Talchir Formation whereas illite(5.3-78.2%),illite/smectite(trace-34.1%,mostly 60-90%illite),and kaolinite(36.1-86.8%)dominate the clay mineral assemblage in the Barakar *** Talchir mudrocks are enriched in mobile elements and depleted in alumina ***,have relatively higher K_(2)O/Al_(2)O_(3) ratios(~0.3),high ICV(1.12-1.28),and lower CIA values(52.6-65.1)compared to those of the younger Barakar *** Barakar mudstones are depleted in mobile elements ***,have relatively low ICV(0.33-0.62)and K_(2)O/Al_(2)O_(3) values(0.11-0.16),and higher CIA values(72.9-88.2).Textural,mineralogical immaturity,and rock fragments of different components of the basement seen in the Talchir sandstones show these sediments being a first-cycle sedimentary *** distinctive clay mineral assemblage and major oxide composition of the Talchir mudrocks attest to a unique low intensity chemical weathering in cold arid *** presence of kaolinite as well as distinctive geochemical characters of the Barakar mudrocks marks a shift in the paleoclimate from cold arid to *** climatic shift is further supported by the proportion and composition of illite/smectite across the *** relative proportion of chlorite

Main Controlling Factors of Organic Matter Richness in a permian Section of Guangyuan, Northeast Sichuan

A complete permian section in Guangyuan （广元）, Northeast Sichuan （四川）, has been investigated, to explore the variation in organic matter richness and its main controlling factors. The research results of the detailed lithological description and organic/inorganic geochemical analysis of about 325 samples indicate that a high content of total organic carbon （TOC） occurs in calcareous mudstones and laminated marls or thin-bedded limestones. In carbonate rocks, the TOC content is negatively related to the thickness of the massive beds; the thinner the bed is, the higher the TOC content is. Marine organic matter is enriched in the outer shelf and relatively shallow basin floor environments with the maximum TOC contents of 5.07% and 14.6%, respectively. The main factors that affect the quantity and quality of marine organic matter include primary productivity, depositional processes, and redox conditions during deposition and the early diagenesis stage. Three intervals of marine good quality source rocks are identified in this section; they are lower Chihsia Formation, topmost Maokou （茅口） Formation, and the middle segment of the Dalong （大隆） Formation. They are formed in anoxic environments, in association with high primary productivity. Among these, high productivity in the lower Chihsia interval may originate from an upwelling flow area, whereas, in the rest of the intervals, it is inferred to be related to hot fluid activity due to volcanic eruption. The results of this study suggest that good quality marine source rocks in the permian strata offer significant hydrocarbon potential.

Lithofacies palaeogeography of the Carboniferous and permian in the Qinshui Basin, Shanxi Province, China

The Qinshui Basin in the southeastern Shanxi Province is an important area for coalbed methane（CBM） exploration and production in China, and recent exploration has revealed the presence of other unconventional types of gas such as shale gas and tight sandstone gas. The reservoirs for these unconventional types of gas in this basin are mainly the coals, mudstones, and sandstones of the Carboniferous and permian; the reservoir thicknesses are controlled by the depositional environments and palaeogeography. This paper presents the results of sedimentological investigations based on data from outcrop and borehole sections, and basin-wide palaeogeographical maps of each formation were reconstructed on the basis of the contours of a variety of lithological parameters. The palaeogeographic units include the depositional environments of the fluvial channel, flood basin（lake）, upper delta plain, lower delta plain, delta front, lagoon, tidal flat, barrier bar, and carbonate *** Benxi and Taiyuan Formations are composed mainly of limestones, bauxitic mudstones,siltstones, silty mudstones, sandstones, and economically exploitable coal seams, which were formed in delta, tidal flat, lagoon, and carbonate platform environments. The Shanxi Formation consists of sandstones, siltstones, mudstones, and coals; during the deposition of the formation, the northern part of the Qinshui Basin was occupied mainly by an upper delta plain environment, while the central and southern parts were mainly occupied by a lower delta plain environment and the southeastern part by a delta front environment. Thick coal zones occur in the central and southern parts, where the main depositional environment was a lower delta plain. The thick coal zones of the Taiyuan Formation evidently occur in the sandstone-rich belts, located mainly in the lower delta plain environment in the northern part of the basin and the barrier bar environments in the southeastern part of the basin. Objective The recent discovery of commercial natural gas accumulations in the Middle permian coarse-crystalline dolomites in the northwest Sichuan Basin has attracted attention to the formation mechanism of these deep-burial carbonate *** to their temporal relationship to the flooded basalts that represent the end-Middle-permian Emeishan Large Igneous Province(ELIP),the Middle permian dolomites were prev iously thought to be products of hydrothermal dolomitization related to the ELIP *** and core observations,however,show that the occurrence and distribution of these dolomites are not controlled by faults,the supposed conduits for hydrothermal ***,they are somewhat ***,the objective of this study,by employing LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating,clumped isotope thermometry(047)and routine stable isotope geochemistry(C carbon,O oxygen and Sr strontium isotopes),is to re-evaluate the genesis of these dolomite reservoirs,with special attention focusing on the diagenetic environment and timing of dolomitization,and the attributes of dolomitizing fluids.

The Early permian (Shansi + Lower Shihhotse Formations) palynofloras of Longshoushan are dominated by Cathaysian-Euramerican common forms, mainly composed of pteridophytic and pteridospermous spores. But up to the Lower Shihhotse Formation, gymnosperms greatly developed, and they possibly already dominated the vegetation in the Upper Shihhotse Formation; while in the late Late permian, they indicate a strong colour of Subangara area. In other words, during the whole permian, the Cathaysian flora had a history from prosperity to decline, and Subangara plants might have had a reverse tendency there.

Growth characteristics and sedimentary mode of permian reefs,Lengwu,Tonglu,Zhejiang Province,southern China

Organic reefs are favourabte accumulation spaces for hydrocarbons and various mineral resources. A complete permian organic reef profile about 44 m thick with distribution area no more than 1 km2 is exposed near Lengwu, Tongtu, Zhejiang Province. Examination of outcrops and thin sections revealed that the main reef-building organisms are catcisponges, with inozoans as dominant type. Five types of rocks have been recognized in the reef, and they are catcisponge framestone, catcisponge bafflestone, bindstone, rudstone and bioctastic wackestone. The profile was constructed in three reef-building stages. The thickness of the second stage is largest, followed by the first stage and the third stage is smallest. Each stage started with a frame-stone or bafflestone, ended as the reef grew near the sea-level, and died because of influx of terrigenous sediments. The development of the Lengwu reef is controlled by biological factors and sea-level changes. Based on the study a reef sedimentary model is established.

Geochemical Characteristics and Petrogenesis of permian Basaltic Rocks in Keping Area,Western Tarim Basin:A Record of Plume-Lithosphere Interaction

ABSTRACT： The two basalt flows in Kupukuziman （库普库兹满） Formation of Keping （柯枰） area are the typical products of permian magmatism. Based on systematic field investigations, we carried out geochemical studies on representative Keping basalts. The results show that the SiO2 contents in basalts range from 44.69 wt.% to 51.68 wt.%, and the total alkalis range from 4.05 wt.% to 5.5 wt.%, belonging to alkaline basalts. The Ti/Y=468.27-565.35 and TIO2=（2.88-3.82） wt.% compared to those of the high-Ti basalts in Emeishan （峨眉山） large igneous province （LIP）（TIO2=（3.58-5.21） wt.%, Ti/Y〉500, Xiao et al., 2004）. The contents of MgO and compatible elements Cr （12.9-18.6 ppm）, Ni （13.7-22.7 ppm）, and Co （39.6-50.2 ppm） are low, which suggest that the samples have undergone varying grades of fractional crystallization. All the samples have uniform REE and other trace element characteristics, with enriched LREE and LILE relative to HREE and HFS, similar REE patterns without Eu anomaly. The basalts are also show slightly depleted of Ta and Nb. They have higher initial STSr/S6Sr ratios （0.707 211-0.708 300）, lower tNd（t） values （-2.47 to -4.14）, and a narrow range of （208pb/204pb）t=37.535 2-38.297 7, （207pb/204pb）~=15.435 7-15.517 0, and （206Pb/204pb）t=17.206 5-17.874 7 ratios. The Ce/Y versus Zr/Nb diagram shows that the parent magmas were originated from low-degree partial melting of the garnet-lherzolite. Nonmarine time-stratigraphy in a rift setting: An example from the Mid-permian lower Quanzijie low-order cycle, Bogda Mountains, NW China

Sedimentological and stratigraphic studies of seven stratigraphic sections of permian Hongyanchi （HYC） and Quanzijie （QZJ） low-order cycles （LCs） in the Tarlong-Taodonggou half graben and Dalongkou area in Bogda Mountains, NW China, demonstrate effective approaches and methodology in cyclo- and time-stratigraphic analyses of complex fluviallacustrine deposits in an intracontinental rift setting. A new synchronous stratigraphic unit, the lower QZJ LC is defined. The lower and upper boundaries of this cycle include a regionally correlative disconformity, erosional unconformity, and conformity, across which significant and abrupt changes in palaeoenvironments and tectonic and climatic conditions occurred. The lower boundary is an erosional unconformity and disconformity with a high-relief topography that juxtaposes lacustrine deposits of the underlying HYC LC with the overlying meandering stream deposits of the lower QZJ LC, and was caused by a regional tectonic uplift. The up- per boundary is a disconformity and local erosional unconformity and conformity, juxtaposing stacked paleosols developed on fluvial sediments with overlying fluvial and loessial deposits of the upper QZJ LC. The paleosols indicate landscape stability and a prolonged period of subaerial exposure and minimal deposition and suggest that climatic conditions were semiarid with strong precipitation seasonality in the Tarlong-Taodonggou half graben and subhumid in the Dalongkou area. The fluvial-loessial deposits indicate a renewed tectonic uplift and a change in the atmospheric circulation pattern. The newly-defined lower QZJ LC facilitates accurate palaeogeographic reconstruction in the study area during a period of major tectonic and climatic changes. The interpreted tectonic and climatic conditions provide a critical data point in the mid-latitude east coast of NE Pangea during the Mid-permian icehouse-hothouse transition. The Claromec o Basin is located at the south-western sector of the Buenos Aires province,*** basin is considered a foreland basin closely related to the evolution of the southwestern Gondwana *** contribution focuses on the provenance analysis of the Tunas Formation(permian,Pillahuinc o Group),which represents the last filling stage for the Claromec o Foreland *** and tectonic provenance analyses were performed in sandstones recovered from subsurface(PANG 0001 and PANG0003 exploration wells)and outcrops located close to the basin center(Gonzales Chaves locality).In the subsurface,the analyzed succession is composed of medium-to fine-grained sandstones interbedded with tuffs,mudrocks,carbonaceous mudrocks and coal *** outcrops,the succession is dominated by mediumto fine-grained sandstones interbedded with *** composition patterns are distributed into the recycled orogen and transitionally recycled to mixed *** analyses,in addition to provenance and sedimentological studies,confirm that sedimentary material was derived from a mixed source,which largely comes from the Sierras Australes fold and thrust belt,located towards the W-SW,where the sedimentary succession is interbedded with volcanic *** Tunas Formation shows clear differences in its modal composition,paleocurrent direction and paleoenvironmental conditions with respect to the underlying units of the Pillahuinc o Group(Sauce Grande,Piedra Azul and Bonete formations).Source areas changed from cratonic to mixed fold belt/arc-derived material,suggesting variations in the Claromec o Basin configuration during the Late *** in the paleotectonic scenario during the deposition of the Tunas Formation have been interpreted as a consequence of a compressive post-collisional deformation event,the product of adjustment,accommodation and translation of terrains towards the equator during the permian-Triassic to form Pangea.
