A series of global major geological and biological events occurred during the permian Period. Establishing a highresolution stratigraphic and temporal framework is essential to understand their cause-effect relationship. The official International timescale of the permian System consists of three series(i.e., Cisuralian, Guadalupian and Lopingian in ascending order) and nine stages. In China, the permian System is composed of three series(Chuanshanian, Yansingian and Lopingian) and eight stages, of which the subdivisions and definitions of the Chuanshanian and Yangsingian series are very different from the Cisuralian and Guadalupian series. The permian Period spanned ～47 Myr. Its base is defined by the First Appearance Datum(FAD) of the conodont Streptognathodus isolatus at Aidaralash, Kazakhstan with an interpolated absolute age 298.9±0.15 Ma at Usolka, southern Urals, Russia. Its top equals the base of the Triassic System and is defined by the FAD of the conodont Hindeodus parvus at Meishan D section, southeast China with an interpolated absolute age 251.902±0.024 Ma. Thirty-five conodont, 23 fusulinid, 17 radiolarian and 20 ammonoid zones are established for the permian in China, of which the Guadalupian and Lopingian conodont zones have been served as the standard for international correlation. The permian δ13 Ccarbtrend indicates that it is characterized by a rapid negative shift of 3–5‰ at the end of the Changhsingian, which can be used for global correlation of the end-permian mass extinction interval, but δ13 Ccarbrecords from all other intervals may have more or less suffered subsequent diagenetic alteration or represented regional or local signatures only. permian δ18 Oapatitestudies suggest that an icehouse stage dominated the time interval from the late Carboniferous to Kungurian(late Cisuralian). permian Tectonic Evolution in the Middle Part of Central Asian Orogenic Belt: Evidence from Newly Identified Volcanic Rocks in the Bilutu Area, Inner Mongolia

In this study, zircon U-Pb ages, geochemical and Lu-Hf isotopic data are presented for the newly identified volcanic rocks which were considered as Bainaimiao group in Bainaimiao Arc Belt(BAB), Inner Mongolia, which could provide important constraints on the evolution of the northern part of North China Block(NCB) and BAB. Basalt to basaltic andesite and andesite to dacite were collected from two sections, which showed eruption ages of 278.2±4.1 Ma and 258.3±3.0 Ma respectively. All samples are characterized by high abundances in Al2O3, LREEs, and LILEs, but depleted in HFSEs. Together with high Mg# ratios and low K/tholeiite to calc-alkaline series, these features indicated that basalt to andesite was likely derived from relatively low degree partial melting of the subduction-fluid related mantle in the spinel phase. And dacite was mainly from the partial melting of crust, then affected by mantle. All samples barely went through fractional crystallization process with the slight Eu anomaly. Compared with the contemporary basalt in NCB, rocks in BAB have a complex composition of zircon and a more positive εHf(t) value(-6.6-6.4), indicating that they had different magma sources of rocks. Though with different basements, NCB and BAB have become an integrated whole before 278 Ma. Therefore, it could be concluded that NCB and BAB belonged to the active continental margin and the PAO had not closed yet until late permian and then it disappeared gradually and the CAOB developed into a condition of syn-post collision.

A Kubergandian （Kungurian） fusuline fauna from the lower part of the Lugu Formation in the Cuozheqiangma area,central Qiangtang Block is *** fusuline fauna belongs to the Southern Transitional Zone in palaeobiogeography,and is characterised by the presence of the distinctive bi-temperate genus Monodiexodina and many genera common in lower latitude Tethyan areas such as Parafusulina and *** occurrence of Monodiexodina in the fauna confirms that the seamount-type carbonates of the Lugu Formation did not originate from the Palaeotethys Ocean,but rather from a branch of the Neotethys Ocean after the rifting of the Qiangtang Block from the Tethys Himalaya area in the Artinskian.

permian Radiolarians from the A'nyemaqen Mélange Zone in the Huashixia Area of Madoi County,Qinghai Province,Western China,and Their Implications on Regional Tectonism

The Huashixia area in the Madoi County, Qinghai Province, western China is one of the most important areas for the studies of the formation and evolution of the A＇nyemaqen mélange zone due to the well exposed, relatively complete tectonostratigraphic successions. However, the timing and evolutionary process of the A＇nyemaqen paleo-ocean has long been poorly understood. Recently, we obtained abundant radiolarians from the siliceous rocks of the Maerzheng Formation of this mélange zone in Huashixia. Total 19 species in 10 radiolarian genera have been identified. They belong mainly to the Albaillellaria, Spumellaria, Entactinaria, and Latentifistularia. Four radiolarian assemblage zones are established, including： the Pseudoalbaillella rhombothoracata, Pseudoalbaillella scalprata, Ruzhencevispongus uralicus, and Follicucullus bipartitus-Follicucullus sp. cf. F. ventricosus zones. Radiolarian faunal correlations suggest a late Artinskian-early Kungurian age and late Capitanian-early Wuchiapingian age for the first two zones from the lower part and the last two zones from the upper parts of the Maerzheng Formation, respectively. All radiolarians are typical of deep water elements living in deep oceans in low latitudes during the permian. Previously, the radiolarians of Early Carboniferous to Early permian age and fusulinids of Early-Middle permian age have also been reported from the A＇nyemaqen mélange successions. The combination of the newly found radiolarians with the previously reported faunal and microfloral assemblages as well as radiometric ages obtained from the same stratigraphic units indicates that the A＇nyemaqen paleo-ocean may have opened initially during the Early Carboniferous, expanded from the Early-Middle permian, reached its acme in the early Late permian, shrunk during the latest permian to Early Triassic, and eventually was closed in the Middle Triassic.

The tectonic evolution and history of continental accretion of the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt(CAOB)are not yet fully *** this study,we investigate permian intrusive rocks from the Jiamusi Block of the eastern CAOB to constrain the tectonic evolution and continental accretion of this region during the late-stage evolution of the Paleo-Asian *** new data show that Early permian gabbro-diorites were derived from the partial melting of depleted mantle metasomatized by oceanic-slab-released *** permian adakitic granites have low Na2O and MgO and high K2O contents,indicating a thickened-lower-crust *** permian S-type granites were derived from the partial melting of continental crust.A compilation of the available geochronological data for permian intrusive rocks(including adakitic and A-,S-,and I-type granites and mafic rocks)from the eastern CAOB reveals that the A-type granites formed mainly during the Early–Middle permian,S-type and adakitic granites mostly during the Middle–Late permian,and I-type granites and mantle-derived mafic rocks throughout the *** A-type granites,which are proposed to have been sourced from thinned continental crust,indicate an extensional setting in the eastern CAOB during the Early *** Middle–Late permian adakitic granites imply a thickened continental crust,which indicates a compressional ***,the eastern CAOB underwent a transition from extension to compression during the Middle permian,which was probably triggered by the late-stage subduction of Paleo-Asian oceanic *** the petrogenesis of the intrusive rocks and inferred regional tectonic evolution of the eastern CAOB,we propose that vertical underplating of mantle-and oceanic-slabderived magmas contributed the materials for continental crust accretion.

permian radiolarians, chert and basalt from the Daxinshan Formation in Lancangjiang belt of southwestern Yunnan, China

The stratigraphical sequences composed of chert and basalt were found in the Daxin-shan area of Simao and the Manbie area of Jinghong, southwestern Yunnan. The Middle permian to ealiest Late permian radiolarians, such as Follicucullus and Pseudoalbaillella, have been identified from the chert. The chert from the Manbie area of Jinghong is characterized by high SiO2 content (over 92%), large ratios of MnO/TiO2 (2.15) and low ratios of AI/(AI+Fe+Mn) (≤0.1) and Ce/Ce*(0.4), which indicate that the chert was deposited in pelagic basin. The chert from the Dax-inshan area of Simao, however, is characterized by low SiO2 content, low ratios of MnO/TiO2 (0.27) and high ratios of Al/(Al+Fe+Mn) (0.49) and Ce/Ce*(0.88), which imply that the chert was deposited in continental margin basin. The basalts from the both areas belong to tholeiite series, and the chemical compositions of their major, rare earth and trace elements show the characteristics of MORB. permian–Triassic Charophytes: Distribution, Biostratigraphy and Biotic Events

permian charophytes are known from the Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Germany, Saudi Arabia, China, the USA, Brazil, Paraguay and India. Most of these records are of Middle- Late permian Age and are the basis of local biostratigraphic zonation in southern Russia and China. Development of a robust permian charophyte biostratigraphy will require a more extensive record. Triassic charopbytes are known from Germany, Sweden, Poland, Slovenia, Bulgaria, the Ukraine, Russia, Morocco, Congo, the USA, Argentina, Kazakhstan and China. This encompasses records from all Triassic stages and has been the basis of detailed biostratigraphic zonation in southern Russia-Kazakhstan-eastern Europe. permian and Triassic charophyte biostratigraphy at the level of genus does not provide detailed correlations beyond local or regional schemes. Nevertheless, it does identify some important evolutionary datums that constrain the timing of important biotic events in the permian-Triassic evolutionary history of the Charophyta, including：（1） Early permian extinction of the Palaeocharaceae; （2） Late permian extinction of the ＂Trochiliscales＂（Moellerinales）; （3） Carboniferous origin of the paraphyletic Porocharaceae, soon followed during the permian by the origin of the multicellular basal plate; and （4） an important generic turnover of charophytes across the Triassic-Jurassic boundary, though there are insufficient data to identify this as a mass extinction.

permian sequence stratigraphy of slope facies in southern Guizhou and chronostratigraphic correlation

The permian in slope facies area of southern Guizhou consists of 16 third order sequences, which can be grouped as four sequence sets and further into two mesosequences. Most of them are delineated by conformable or submarine erosion surfaces, and well controlled by conodont and fusulinid zones. Four important sea-level falls are recognized in the area, which occur respectively at the basalSweetognathodus whitei zone, *** zone, middleJinogondolella xuanhanensis zone and the basalClarkina yini zone. Among the recognized transgression events, three are regarded as the most significant. They occur respectively at the basalNeogondolella exculptus zone, basalJinogondolella nankingensis zone and the lowerClarkina postbitteri zone, and are all accompanied by faunal turnovers. The key surfaces in sequences can be used to fine-tune the boundaries of bio-chronozones, stages and series.

A statistical test on diversity changes of Early and Middle permian fusulinacean fauna in South China

The rarefaction analysis has been conducted to test the species diversity changes of the Early and Middle permian fusulinacean fauna in South China. The results reveal that the number of species dramatically increased since the earliest permian and quickly reached the maximum value in the early Zisongian representing the highest species diversity for the whole Early and Middle permian. The species diversity stabilized in the plateau through the Zisongian; however, it started to decline in the following Longlinian and sustained a longstanding low level during the mid-Early permian. With the appearance of new fusulinacean taxa with septulum structures, the number of species raised again in the late-Early permian, followed by a decline in the Middle permian Neoschwagerina simplex zone. Although the species diversity increased apparently in the Kuhfengian, it never rebounded back to the same level as in the Early permian. In the mid-Middle permian, species diversity began to decrease continuously and led to the disappearance of most fusulinacean species by the end of the Middle permian.
