Nitrates,thiocyanates,and perchlorates are ubiquitous in the environment and can be introduced to the public through various dietary and environmental sources.Nitrates,thiocyanates,and perchlorates mainly affect health via the same mechanism.These toxins may act as endocrine disrupters and can result in decreased levels of thyroid hormones^([1]).

Background:Few studies have explored the impact of perchlorate,nitrate,and thiocyanate(PNT)on kidney function.This study aimed to evaluate the association of urinary levels of PNT with renal function as well as the prevalence of chronic kidney disease(CKD)among the general population in the United States.Methods:This analysis included data from 13,373 adults(≥20 years)from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2005 to 2016.We used multivariable linear and logistic regression,to explore the associations of urinary PNT with kidney function.Restricted cubic splines were used to assess the potentially non-linear relationships between PNT exposure and outcomes.Results:After traditional creatinine adjustment,perchlorate(P-traditional)was positively associated with estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR)(adjustedβ:2.75;95%confidence interval[CI]:2.25 to 3.26;P<0.001),and negatively associated with urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio(ACR)(adjustedβ:-0.05;95%CI:-0.07 to-0.02;P=0.001)in adjusted models.After both traditional and covariate-adjusted creatinine adjustment,urinary nitrate and thiocyanate were positively associated with eGFR(all P values<0.05),and negatively associated with ACR(all P values<0.05);higher nitrate or thiocyanate was associated with a lower risk of CKD(all P values<0.001).Moreover,there were L-shaped non-linear associations between nitrate,thiocyanate,and outcomes.In the adjusted models,for quartiles of PNT,statistically significant dose-response associations were observed in most relationships.Most results were consistent in the stratified and sensitivity analyses.Conclusions:Exposures to PNT might be associated with kidney function,indicating a potential beneficial effect of environmental PNT exposure(especially nitrate and thiocyanate)on the human kidney.

The precise regulation of interactions provided by aggregation-induced emission(AIE)probes is of considerable significance for improving the sensing performance in the field of on-site detection.Here,a highly sensitive perchlorate detection probe was designed by precisely modulating the van der Waals interactions by adjusting the length of the alkyl chain.The optimized AIE probe demonstrated superior perchlorate detection performance owing to its strong van der Waals interactions with perchlorate,including a low detection limit(53.81 nM),rapid response(perchlorate particles with a detection limit as low as 15 fg under a fluorescence microscope.Moreover,the practicality of the probe was further verified by employing a sensing chip in a portable detector,and thus the probe has been proven to be highly promising for trace perchlorate monitoring in real scenarios.We expect the present study to be of great value for the efficient design of high-performance fluorescent probes.

Artificial membrane transporters that either use chalcogen bonds to facilitate transmembrane flux of anions or show high selectivity toward perchlorate anions are rare.In this work,we report on one such novel monopeptide-based transporter system,featuring both chalcogen bonds for highly efficient anion transport and high transport selectivity toward ClO_(4)^(-) anions.Structurally,these monopeptide molecules associate with each other via H-bonds to produce H-bonded 1D stack that not only one dimensionally but also directionally aligns the terminal bicyclic thiophene motifs to the same side.Functionally,these well-aligned thiophenes create a sulfur-rich transmembrane pathway,combinatorially fine-tunable to enable anions to efficiently cross the membrane in the increasing activity of Cl^(-)

perchlorate concentrations in 387 unhusked rice samples from 15 main producing provinces/municipality in China were investigated by high-performance liquid chromatography-tanden mass spectrometry.The results indicated that perchlorate displays a mean level of 17.17μg/kg in un-husked rice samples.Intriguingly,we also found that perchlorate is mainly observed in rice husk among these collected unhusked rice samples,while less observed in rice bran and milled rice.Specifically,the perchlorate levels in rice were found in the husks(73.61%),bran(10.09%),and milled rice(19.52%),respectively.Our results indicated that there is no significantly perchlorate exposure risk in edible milled rice.

perchlorate has recently emerged as a wide- spread environmental contaminant of healthy concern. Development of novel detection methods for perchlorate with the potential for field use has been an urgent need. The investigation has shown that surface-enhanced Raman scattering （SERS） technique has great potential to become a practical analysis tool for the rapid screening and routine monitoring of perchlorate in the field, particularly when coupled with portable/handheld Raman spectrometers. In this review article, we summarize progress made in SERS analysis of perchlorate in water and other media with an emphasis on the development of SERS substrates for perchlorate detection. The potential of this technique for fast screening and field testing ofperchlorate-contaminated environmental samples is discussed. The challenges and possible solutions are also addressed, aiming to provide a better understanding on the development directions in the research field.

Composite solid propellant is prepared using tri-modal Ammonium perchlorate(AP)containing coarse,fine and ultrafine fractions of AP with average particle size(APS)340,40 and 5 mm respectively,in various compositions and their rheological,mechanical and burn rate characteristics are evaluated.The optimum combination of AP coarse to fine to ultrafine weight fraction was obtained by testing of series of propellant samples by varying the AP fractions at fixed solid loading.The concentration of aluminium was maintained constant throughout the experiments for ballistics requirement.The propellant formulation prepared using AP with coarse to fine to ultrafine ratio of 67:24:9 has lowest viscosity for the propellant paste and highest tensile strength due to dense packing as supported by the literature.A minimum modulus value was also observed at 9 wt.%of ultrafine AP concentration indicates the maximum solids packing density at this ratio of AP fractions.The burn rate is evaluated at different pressures to obtain pressure exponent.Incorporation of ultrafine fraction of AP in propellant increased burn rate without adversely affecting the pressure exponent.Higher solid loading propellants are prepared by increased AP concentration from 67 to 71 wt.%using AP with coarse to fine to ultrafine ratio of67:24:9.Higher solid content up to 89 wt.%was achieved and hence increased solid motor performance.The unloading viscosity showed a trend with increased AP content and the propellant couldn't able to cast beyond 71 wt.%of AP.Mechanical properties were also studied and from the experiments noticed that%elongation decreased with increased AP content from 67 to 71 wt.%,whereas tensile strength and modulus increased.Burn rate increased with increased AP content and observed that pressure exponent also increased and it is high for the propellant containing with 71 wt.%of AP due to increased oxidiser to fuel ratio.Catalysed composite solid propellant is prepared by using burn rate modifiers Copper chromite and Iron oxide.Addition of Co

To investigate the effects of exogenous lanthanum （La） on Alternanthera philoxeroides （Mart.） Griseb under perchlorate stress, changes in the growth and physiological parameters were investigated in solution culture experiments under controlled condi- tions. Different concentrations of La （NO3）3 were used in our study. It was shown that 0. 1 and 0.5 mg/L La3＋ alleviated the inhibition effect of perchlorate on A. philoxeroides, including relative growth yield, dry weight of different organs, leaf area and root activity. And La3＋ prevented decline in the relative chlorophyll content and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters including Fv/Fm, Fv＇/Frn＇, φPSll and ETR induced by perchlorate stress. Moreover, 0.5 mg/L La3＋ showed an optimal mitigative effect, while excess La3＋（5.0 mg/L） led to synergistic effect on stress. Correlation analysis revealed a significant positive relationship between growth indexes and the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, root activity and relative chlorophyll content （p〈0.05）. The results suggested that appropriate concentration of La3＋ could effectively alleviate growth inhibition and injury ofA. philoxeroides caused by perchlorate stress, and the mitigative effect of La3＋ might be achieved by improving root activity, maintaining chlorophyll content and promoting photochemical efficiency of photosystem II ofA. philoxeroides under perchlorate stress.

Process control parameters influencing microbial perchlorate reduction via a flow-through zero-valent iron （ZVI） column reactor were investigated in order to optimize perchlorate removal from water. Mixed perchlorate reducers were obtained from a wastewater treatment plant and inoculated into the reactor without further acclimation. Examined parameters included hydraulic residence time （HRT）, pH, nutrients requirement, and perchlorate reduction kinetics. The minimum HRT for the system was concluded to be 8 hr. The removal efficiency of 10 mg. L-1 influent perchlorate concentration was reduced by 20%-80% without control to the neutral pH （HRT = 8 hr）. Therefore pH was determined to be an important parameter for microbial perchlorate reduction. Furthermore, a viable alternative to pH buffer was discussed. The microbial perchlorate reduction followed the first order kinetics, with a rate constant （K） of 0.761 hr-1. The results from this study will contribute to the implementation of a safe, cost effective, and efficient system for perchlorate reduction to below regulated levels.
