An extensive experimental-mechanistic study was conducted to reveal the relationship between the light weight deflectometer(LWD)measured deflections and the degree of compaction of pavement base materials.Both laboratory experiments and test pits experiments were performed with different types of pavement base materials.The modulus based maximum allowable LWD deflections under different structural and compaction conditions were developed for the most commonly used pavement base aggregate in Indiana.The maximum allowable deflections are based on the equivalent subgrade modulus and the thickness of the layer to be compacted.It is emphasized that the LWD deflections must be measured as soon as the material is compacted or before the moisture content decreases beyond a specified range.Therefore,the maximum allowable deflections are specified in terms of the difference between the actual moisture content and the optimum moisture content.The maximum allowable deflection values provide a sound basis for compaction quality control using LWD devices.

Bituminous materials are heat-sensitive, and their mechanical properties vary with temperature. This variation in properties is not without consequences on the performance of flexible road structures under the repeated passage of multi-axles. This study determines the influence of seasonal variations on the rate of permanent deformation, the rut depth of flexible pavements and the effect of alternating loading of heavy goods vehicles following the temperature variations on the durability of roads. Thus, an ambient and pavement surface temperature measurement was carried out in 2022. The temperature profile at different layers of the modelled pavement, the evaluation of deformation rates and rutting depth were determined using several models. The results show that the permanent deformation and rutting rates are higher at the level of the bituminous concrete layer than at the level of the asphalt gravel layer because the stresses decrease from the surface to the depth of the pavement. On the other hand, the variations in these rates, permanent deformations and ruts between the hot and so-called cold periods are more pronounced in the bitumen gravel than in bituminous concrete, showing that gravel bitumen is more sensitive to temperature variations than bituminous concrete despite its higher rigidity. Of these results, we suggested a periodic and alternating loading of the different types of heavy goods vehicles. These loads consist of fully applying the WAEMU standards with a tolerance of 15% during periods of high and low temperatures. This regulation has increased 2 to 3 times in the durability of roadways depending on the type of heavy goods vehicle.

The extraction of pavement cracks is always a hard task in image processing.In airport and road construction,cracking is the main factor for pavement damage,which can decrease the quality of pavement and affect transportation seriously.Cracks also exist in other artificial or natural objects,such as buildings,bridges,tunnels,etc.Among all the object images,pavement crack images are the most complex,so the image processing and analysis for them is harder than other crack images.From the early image acquisition based on photography technology to the current 3 D laser scanning technology,the pavement crack image acquisition technology is becoming more convenient and efficient,but there are still challenges in the automatic processing and recognition of cracks in images.From the early global thresholding to deep learning algorithms,the research for crack extraction has been developed for about 40 years.There are many methods and algorithms that are satisfactory in pavement crack applications,but there is no standard until today.Therefore,in order to know the developing history and the advanced research,we have collected a number of literature in this research topic for summarizing the research artwork status,and giving a review of the pavement crack image acquisition methods and2 D crack extraction algorithms.Also,for image acquisition methods and pavement crack image segmentation,more detailed comparison and discussions are made.

Influence of polyolefin fibers on the strength and deformability properties of road pavement concrete

Influence of the type and quantity of polyolefin fibers on the strength properties(compression strength, tensile strength in bending, strength in uniaxial tension), the deformation properties(elastic modulus, Poisson’s coefficient) and the abrasion resistance of cement concrete with water-to-cement ratio within 0.31 e0.55 were stated in the paper.The ways of fibers introduction into fresh concrete were investigated. It was shown that the fibers introduction method and procedure of mixing are the ways to improve the fibers uniform distribution in fresh concrete. The increase of the bending tensile strength and the uniaxial tensile strength of concrete with fibers reinforcement in comparison with the reference concrete was observed with the water-to-cement ratio decrease. The increase of uniaxial tensile strength at age of 28 days for concrete with macrofibers in amount of4.5 kg/m^3 was 23% and 29%;for macrofibers in quantity of 3 kg/m^3 was 19% and 26% with water-cement ratio equal to 0.49 and 0.31, respectively. The maximum reduction of abrasion in the range of 7.5%e10% was observed in concrete with water-to-cement ratio within0.44 e0.55 for all investigated types of fibers. The influence of fibers on the concrete abrasion with lower W/C ratio was negligible. The results can contribute to the rational use of modified polyolefin fibers in road pavement concrete.

A review on the best practices in concrete pavement design and materials in wet-freeze climates similar to Michigan

The research presented in this paper aims to identify best practices of design and materials for concrete pavements in wet-freeze climates similar to the Michigan State. For the purposes of this paper, a best practice is a procedure that has been shown by field-validated research or experience to produce improved results and that is established or proposed as a standard suitable for widespread implementation. The local wet-freeze climate makes the requirements for Michigan's pavement system different from many other regions. Wetfreeze climates can result in various concrete pavement distress mechanisms such as thermally-induced cracking, freeze-thaw deterioration, accelerated cracking due to loss of support, frost heave, and material degradation. Therefore, appropriate procedures for design and material selection need to be selected to withstand high precipitation and freezing winter temperatures. Failure to take into account the climatic conditions may lead to inadequate or reduced pavement performance. However, utilizing appropriate techniques and materials could potentially improve the quality and increase the service life of the concrete pavement. Three design methods and five materials have been identified, and examples of their successful performance in wet-freeze climates are provided. In addition, the reasons that give them the superior performance in wet-freeze climates are discussed in detail.

Investigation of accuracy of pavement mechanistic empirical prediction performance by incorporating Level 1 inputs

The recently developed AASHTOWare pavement mechanistic empirical(M-E)design requires advanced characterization of pavement materials.In particular,M-E Level 1 analysis requires materials input parameters to be obtained from the laboratory test results.In cooperation with the New Mexico Department of Transportation(NMDOT),six pavement sites were selected to compare M-E Level 1 predicted performances from laboratory tested data with the field performances.pavement materials such as subgrade,base,asphalt concrete,binder,aggregate,etc.,were collected from these pavements sites during construction.Laboratory dynamic modulus,fatigue endurance limit(FEL),dynamic shear rheometer,and resilient modulus tests were conducted on the collected materials.Using these parameters,pavement sections,as constructed,were modeled and analyzed in M-E at Levels 1,2 and 3.The predicted distress quantities for international roughness index(IRI)and rutting were compared with the field collected data as well as among the three design levels.The analysis results demonstrated that M-E overpredicts IRI and rutting in the pavement compared to the field performance.It was also observed that Level 1 showed the lowest rutting,whereas the maximum rutting was found at Level 2.The dynamic modulus of AC layer was underpredicted at Levels 2 and 3 resulting in higher rutting and IRI.

There is much research conducted on the vehicle technologies required for operation of autonomous vehicles(AV) on public roads, as well as analysis of the interaction between AV and the road environment. However, limited research exists on the impact of AV on road pavement structures. The research includes issues such as the effect of more channelized traffic loading, shorter inter-vehicle following distances and potential higher traffic volumes of more uniform vehicle types and loads. This paper discusses the application of existing and generation of new, relevant accelerated pavement testing(APT) data in understanding the effects of AV on pavement infrastructure. The paper presents development of provisional guidelines for the use and application of APT data to ensure that road pavement structures cope with anticipated increase in AV use. It is concludes that the use of AV fleets on existing road pavement infrastructure may lead to different behaviors and responses than what became the norm under non-autonomous vehicle fleets;appropriate analysis of existing APT data will contribute to the improved understanding of these expected changes in behaviors and responses; appropriate planning of AV operations-focused APT is possible with existing technology to contribute to the provision of economic and durable road pavement infrastructure in future.

System Identification Method for Evaluating the Effect of Thickness Error on Backcalculated pavement Layer Moduli

Based on system identification theory and FWD testing data, the effect of thickness error on backcalculating pavement layer moduli is studied and the method of singular value decomposition (SVD) is presented to solve the morbidity problem of sensitivity matrix in this paper.The results show that the thickness error has great effects on the backcalculated pavement layer moduli. The error of backcalculated moduli can be controlled within the range of ±15% by limiting the thickness error within the range of ±5%.

Asphalt concrete pavements in hot and dry climates deteriorate prematurely some time after their construction. This degradation is accelerated under the effect of heavy vehicle traffic pressure and high temperatures after the bitumen has softened. A study was conducted on the RN1 in Burkina Faso in order to analyze the evolution of temperature and traffic in the process of degradation of asphalt concrete pavements. It consisted on the one hand in recording the temperatures at different points inside the layers of asphalt concrete pavements and the layer of laterite. These results were compared with the values of the softening temperatures of the bitumen obtained in the laboratory. On the other hand, this study is supplemented by the daily counting of heavy goods vehicles passing through the RN1 during the month of April in order to study the influence of the evolution of heavy goods vehicle traffic on the degradation of pavements in hot and dry climatic conditions. The results obtained for temperatures and the frequency of heavy goods vehicle traffic favor pavement deterioration under certain conditions.
