Human cadaver dissection remains a core and preferred method of anatomical instruction at most low- and middle-income health professional training institutions. Dissection, which is both traumatic and stressful, sets the tone of the students’ responses to later and or similar stressful learning opportunities like the post-mortems or care for terminally ill patients. partial least squares structural equation modelling was used to determine the effect of the students’: personality, perception of the learning environment, learning approach, and effect of the environment on the student, on undergraduate health professional student’s activity in the human cadaver dissection room. This was a secondary analysis of previously collected data from a cross sectional survey of undergraduate health professional students. We found that personality type and perception of the environment had a positive effect on dissection room activity. Approach to learning and being affected by the dissection room experience (impact), had a negative effect on dissection room activity. All the above effects on dissection room activity were not significant. This study showed that personality, perception of the learning environment, learning approach and effect of the environment on the student, had effects on undergraduate health professional student’s activity in the human cadaver dissection room. The modelled effects are opportunities for educational interventions aimed at increasing student activity in the dissection room.

Predicting Pain in Total and partial Knee Arthroplasty

Object: Although pain relief is a primary goal of a total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and partial knee arthroplasty (PKA), a significant number of arthroplasty patients experience unexplained pain. This study attempts to determine preoperative or intraoperative factors that may predict pain after knee arthroplasty. Methods: 2585 primary TKAs and 423 PKAs were performed between 1993 and 2013. Infections, loosening, and revision arthroplasty were excluded. Knee Society scores, demographics, component sizes, pre- and postoperative alignment, treatment of the posterior cruciate ligament, range of motion, and diagnosis were analyzed. Statistical analysis utilized repeated measures ANOVA. Results: Significant predictors of increased pain after TKA were pre-operative varus alignment >5° (p = 0.0042), postoperative flexion range of motion 5° (p = 0.0006), small tibial component sizes (p = 0.0080), excision of the posterior cruciate ligament (p = 0.0259), and diagnosis as osteonecrosis (p = 0.0077). Factors not associated with pain included age, body mass index, gender, postoperative alignment and bone quality. For PKA, age was the only factor associated with pain. Conclusions: Six factors were found to be relevant to postoperative pain in TKA. For PKA, reported pain is not associated with any of the same factors, but is associated with age. Surgeons should be aware of these risk factors as we continue to understand pain after total and partial knee arthroplasty.

In this paper, Laplace decomposition method (LDM) and Pade approximant are employed to find approximate solutions for the Whitham-Broer-Kaup shallow water model, the coupled nonlinear reaction diffusion equations and the system of Hirota-Satsuma coupled KdV. In addition, the results obtained from Laplace decomposition method (LDM) and Pade approximant are compared with corresponding exact analytical solutions.

Ericson formula represents the first formula, which was suggested to describe the partial level density (PLD) formula in pre-equilibrium region of the nuclear reactions. Then a number of corrections were added to this formula in order to make it more suitable to physical meaning. In this paper, there are two aims to be done: the first aim is to study the correspondence between one and two-components formulae in Ericson, Pauli, and pairing corrections;the second aim is to compare and study the results of Comprehensive formula, which contents with all corrections, with Ericson, Pauli, and pairing formulae. The Comprehensive formula was suggested to simulate the reality. To achieve these aims the 56Fe and 90Zr nuclei were chosen and the results showed that the difference between one and two-components formulae was too small which can be neglected. Furthermore, the results strongly recommended that for cross section calculations of the nuclear reaction, one must use Comprehensive formula rather than Pauli formula.

Background: 5-HT4receptors in cortex and hippocampus area are considered as a possible target for modulation of cognitive functions in Alzheimer’s disease (AD). A systems pharmacology approach was adopted to evaluate the potential of the 5-HT4 modulation in providing beneficialeffects on cognition in AD. Methods: A serotonergic synaptic cleft model was developed by integrating serotonin firing, release, synaptic half-life, drug/tracer properties (affinity and agonism) as inputs and5-HT4 activity as output. The serotonergic model was calibrated using bothinvivo data on free 5-HT levels in preclinical models and human imaging data. The model was further expanded to other neurontransmitter systems and incorporated into a computer-based cortical network model which implemented the physiology of 12 different membrane CNS targets. A biophysically realistic, multi-compartment model of 80 pyramidal cells and 40 interneurons was further calibrated usingdata reported for working memory tasks in healthyhumans and schizophrenia patients. Model output was the duration of the network firing activity in response to an external stimulus. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology, in particular synapse and neuronal cell loss in addition to cholinergic deficits, was calibrated to align with the natural clinical disease progression. The model was used to provide insights into the effect of 5-HT4 activation on working memory and to prospectively simulate the response of PF- 04995274, a 5-HT4partial agonist, in a scopolamine-reversal trial in healthy human subjects. Results: The model output suggested a beneficial effect of 5-HT4 agonism on working memory. The model also projected no effect or an exacerbation of scopolamine impairment for low in- trinsic activity 5-HT4agonists, which was supported by the subsequent human trial outcome. The clinical prediction of the disease model strongly suggests that 5-HT4 agonists with high intrinsic activity may have a beneficial effect on cognition in AD patients.

New Implementation of Legendre Polynomials for Solving partial Differential Equations

In this paper we present a proposal using Legendre polynomials approximation for the solution of the second order linear partial differential equations. Our approach consists of reducing the problem to a set of linear equations by expanding the approximate solution in terms of shifted Legendre polynomials with unknown coefficients. The performance of presented method has been compared with other methods, namely Sinc-Galerkin, quadratic spline collocation and LiuLin method. Numerical examples show better accuracy of the proposed method. Moreover, the computation cost decreases at least by a factor of 6 in this method.

Various abnormal phenomena have been observed during PCR so far. The present study performed a series of consecutive PCRs (including many rounds of re-amplification continuously) and found that the abortion of re-amplification was inevitable as long as a variety of complicated product appeared. The aborting stages varied, according to the lengths of targets. Longer targets reached the abortion earlier than the shorter ones, marked by appearance of the complex that was immobile in electropho-resis. Denatured gel-electrophoresis revealed that the complex was mainly made up of shorter or partially synthesized strands, together with small amounts of full-length ones. Able to be digested by S1 nuclease but unable by restriction endonucleases (REs), the complex was proved to consist of both single regions and double-helix regions that kept the complex stable thermodynamically. Simulations gave evidence that partial strands, even at lower concentration, could disturb re-amplification effec- tively and lead to the abortion of re-amplifications finally. It was pointed out that the partial strands formed chiefly via polymerase’s infidelity, and hence the solution to lighten the abnormality was also proposed.
