Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome(POTS)is a disabling condition characterized by orthostatic intolerance with tachycardia in the absence of drop-in blood pressure.A custom-built near-infrared spectroscopy device(NIRS)is applied to monitor the muscle oxygenation,noninvasively in patients undergoing incremental head-up tilt table(HUT).Subjects(6 POTS patients and 6 healthy controls)underwent 30 mins of 70on a *** results showed a signicant difference in deoxyhemoglobin(Hb),change-in-oxygenation(△Oxy)and blood volume(△BV)between patients and healthy ***,oxyhemoglobin(HbO_(2))showed a significantly faster rate of change in the healthy controls during the first 10 mins of the tilt and during the *** NIRS muscle oximetry tool provides quantitative measurements of blood oxygenation monitoring in diseases such as POTS.

oxygenation constants and thermodynamic parameters DeltaH degrees and DeltaS degrees of cobalt (II) complexes with bis-(furaldehyde) Schiff bases (1, 2, 3, 4)were obtained by mearsuring saturated dioxygen uptake of these complexes in pyridine at different temperature. These complexes could activate molecular oxygen and were used as catalysts in cyclohexene oxidation. The influence of ligand structure on the dioxygen affinity and catalytic activity of the complexes were discussed.

Cobalt(II) Salen Complex with Two Aza-crown Pendants and Its Analogues as Synthetic Oxygen Carriers

Salen with two aza-crown ether pendants H2L1 and its analogues H2L2--H2L4 were successfully synthesized starting from benzo-10-aza-15-crown-5 (BN15C5) or morpholine. Their structures were characterized by IR, MS, H-1 NMR and elemental analysis, and were confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis of H2L1. Moreover, the saturated oxygen uptake of their cobalt(II) complexes CoL1-CoL4 in diethyleneglycol dimethyl ether was determined at different temperature. The oxygenation contants ( K-O2) and thermodynamic parameters (DeltaHdegrees and DeltaSdegrees) were calculated. The modulation of O-2-binding capabilities by pendant substituents were investigated as compared with the parent Schiff base complex CoL5 (CoSalen). The results indicate that the dioxygen affinities of CoL have been much more enhanced by aza-crown pendants than that by morpholino pendants, and the O-2-binding capabilities of CoL1 and CoL2 with aza-crown pendants would also be enhanced by adding alkali metal cations.

Background To summarize the experience of management of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) *** We presented three neonates with PPHN supported by ECMO in our *** records and patient management notes were retrospectively *** For two neonates with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH),diaphragm repair surgery was done under ECMO *** patient was weaned from ECMO after 73 hours,and recovered well at the last follow-up after 1 *** other patient was weaned from ECMO after 167 hours,and he died from septic shock 21 days after *** the neonate with idiopathic PPHN,ECMO was withdrawn *** ECMO is an effective rescue means for refractory *** intervention timing,accurate coagulation,and volume management are important.

Background: We report two cases of acute respiratory distress syndrome in burn patients who were successfully managed with good outcomes with extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) after failing multiple conventional modes of ventilation, and review the relevant *** presentation: The two patients were a 39-year-old male and 53-year-old male with modified Baux Scores of 79 and 78, respectively, with no known inhalation injury. After the initial modified Parkland-based fluid resuscitation and partial escharotomy, both patients developed worsening hypoxemia and acute respiratory distress *** hypoxemia continued to worsen on multiple modes of ventilation including volume control, pressure regulated volume control, pressure control, airway pressure release ventilation and volumetric diffusive *** both cases, the PaO2 ≤ 50 mm Hg on a FiO2100% during the trial of mechanical ventilation. The deterioration was rapid (oxygenation) in both cases.A decision was made to trial the patients on ECMO. Veno-Venous ECMO (V-V ECMO) was successfully initiated following cannulation-under transesophgeal echo guidance—with the dual lumen Avalon? (Maquet, NJ, USA) cannula. ECMO support was maintained for 4 and 24 days, respectively. Both patients were successfully weaned off ECMO and were discharged to rehabilitation following their complex hospital ***: Early ECMO for isolated respiratory failure in the setting on maintained hemodynamics resulted in a positive outcome in our two burn patients suffered from acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Photosynthetic rate (Pn) and the partitioning of noncyclic photosynthetic electron transport to photorespiration (Jo) in seedlings of four subtropical woody plants growing at three light intensities were studied in the summer time by measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence and CO2 exchange. Except Schima superba, an upper canopy tree species, the tree species Castanopsis fissa and two understory shrubs Psychotria rubra, Ardisia quinquegona had the highest Pn at 36% of sunlight intensity. The total photosynthetic electron transport rate (JF) and the ratio of Jo/JF were elevated in leaves under full sunlight. Jo/JF ratio reached 0.5-0.6 and coincided with the increasing of oxygenation rate of Rubisco (Vo), the activity of glycolate oxidase and photorespiration rate at full sunlight. It is suggested that an increasing partitioning proportion of photosynthetic electron transport to photorespiration might be one of the protective regulation mechanisms in forest plant under strong summer light and high temperature conditions.

AIM To examine whether high-flow nasal oxygen(HFNO) availability influences the use of general anesthesia(GA) in patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound(EUS) and associated *** In this retrospective study, patients were stratified into 3 eras between October 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014 based on HFNO availability for deep sedation at the time of their endoscopy. During the first and last 3-mo eras(era 1 and 3), no HFNO was available, whereas it was an option during the second 3-mo era(era 2). The primary outcome was the percent utilization of GA vs deep sedation in each period. Secondary outcomes included oxygen saturation nadir during sedation between periods, as well as procedure duration, and anesthesia-only time between periods and for GA vs sedation cases *** During the study period 238 ERCP or EUS cases were identified for analysis. Statistical testing was employed and a P oxygenation for ERCP and EUS during sedation.

In recent years there has been significant developments in photosensitizers(PSs), light sources and light delivery systems that have allowed decreasing the treatment time and skin phototoxicity resulting in more frequent use of photodynamic therapy(PDT) in the clinical settings. Compared to standard treatment approaches such as chemo-radiation and surgery, PDT has much reduced morbidity for head and neck malignancies and is becoming an alternative treatment option. It can be used as an adjunct therapy to other treatment modalities without any additive cumulative side effects. Surface illumination can be an option for pre-malignant and early-stage malignancies while interstitial treatment is for debulking of thick tumors in the head and neck region. PDT can achieve equivalent or greater efficacy in treating head and neck malignancies, suggesting that it may be considered as a first line therapy in the future. Despite progressive development, clinical PDT needs improvement in several topics for wider acceptance including standardization of protocols that involve the same administrated light and PS doses and establishing quantitative tools for PDT dosimetry planning and response monitoring. Quantitative measures such as optical parameters, PS concentration, tissueoxygenation and blood flow are essential for accurate PDT dosimetry as well as PDT response monitoring and assessing therapy outcome. Unlike conventional imaging modalities like magnetic resonance imaging, novel optical imaging techniques can quantify PDT-related parameters without any contrast agent administration and enable real-time assessment during PDT for providing fast feedback to clinicians. Ongoing developments in optical imaging offer the promise of optimization of PDT protocols with improved outcomes.
