Stock index adjustments and analysts' forecast optimism:A quasi-natural experiment on the CSI 300 Index

As stock index adjustments comprise a basic system of capital market,their potential influence on analysts’earnings forecasts is worthy of research.Based on a research sample of 23 adjustments to the CSI 300 Index from June 2007 to June 2018 and the backup stocks announced during the same period,this study examines the impact of additions to stock index on analysts’forecast optimism using a staggered difference-in-differences model.The research results show that after stocks are added to the stock index,analysts’earnings forecast optimism about these stocks increases significantly.Cross-sectional analysis indicates that this increase is more significant when the market is bullish,institutional ownership is low,the ratio of listed brokerage firms is low,star analyst coverage is low,firms show seasoned equity offering activity,the ratio of analysts from the top five brokerage firms ranked by commission income is high,and the analysts’brokerage firms are shareholders.However,analystlevel tests find that analysts’ability helps to reduce the impact of additions to stock index on earnings forecast optimism.Furthermore,additions to stock index significantly increase analyst coverage and forecast divergence.Economic consequences tests find additions to stock index significantly increases stock price synchronization,which is partly mediated by analysts’earnings forecast optimism.This study enriches the literature on the impact of basic capital market systems and analyst behavior.The findings suggest that investors should rationally evaluate analysts’earnings forecasts for stocks added to the stock index and obtain further information from various channels to improve asset allocation efficiency.

哲学术语optimism源于拉丁文optimus,于19世纪中后期传入中日两国。通过调查中日两国多种近现代词典与两国语料库发现,在译介到两国之初时,日语先后译为「楽天教」「萬物皆善説」「楽観主義」「楽天主義」等,其后译词传入汉语。而现代,两国在译词选择上出现了不同倾向,中方较统一地以“乐观主义”对译;日方则较为复杂,同时存在多个译词且较不固定,但整体上来说以「楽天」为语素的译词占优。这与汉日语中的同形词“乐观/楽観”“乐天/楽天”的语义及使用相关,同时也与汉日语分别使用反义词“乐观—悲观”和「楽天―厭世」对译哲学术语optimism与pessimism有密切关联。

Background and Objective: Individuals apply various emotion regulation strategies, some of which are adaptive and others are maladaptive affecting people’s general health. Moreover, individual life-orientation including favorable expectancies about future (optimism) is associated with health-related behaviors. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship of optimism and emotion regulation strategies with general health of university students. Materials and Methods: This was a correlational study. In this regard, 182 students of University of Sistan and Baluchestan (70 males and 112 females) were chosen. The statistical population of the present study consisted of all undergraduate students of the university of Sistan and Baluchestan in the second semester of the 2009-2010 academic year. Considering the nature of the current study, the correlational method was applied. Based on Krejcie and Morgan’s table, a sample of 200 subjects was selected from students majored at different fields including human sciences, basic sciences and technical-engineering through applying multi-stage random sampling method. Eighteen incomplete questionnaire forms were excluded. Finally, data obtained from 182 subjects (112 females, 70 males) were analyzed. The mean age was 21.1 year-old and standard deviation of the sample was 2.06. Samplings were assessed using the Revised Life-Orientation Test (LOT-R), Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) and General Health-28 Questionnaire (GHQ-28). Data were analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient and regression analysis. Fuzzy numbers are convenient for representing imprecise numerical quantities in a vague environment, and their comparison or ranking is very important for application purposes. Despite many methods suggested in the literature, there is no single measure that is universally applicable to a wide variety of situations. This paper suggested a new method for comparing fuzzy numbers based on the combination of maximizing possibility and minimizing possibility using an index of optimism in [0,1] reflecting the decision makers’ risk taking attitude. The method is simple, but has many comparative advantages.

Coping with Covid

Aim and Objective: What determines how people coped with the challenges of adapting to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions and requirements? In four studies, conducted in 2021, groups of European adults (N>1800) noted how they had personally coped with Covid-19. Method: In each study, participants reported on their age, sex and education, their political and religious beliefs, as well as giving self-ratings and completing a number of standard tests on such things as their personality, intelligence and belief in conspiracy theories. Results: In the first study, sex, self-esteem, optimism and intelligence were significant predictors of self-assessed coping. In the second study, only optimism and emotional stability were significant predictors. In the third study, sex, optimism, self-esteem and ratings of change were related to coping. In the fourth study, self-esteem was the only significant predictor. Discussion: The results suggest that optimistic, better adjusted people, with higher self-esteem claim to be better copers. Age, education as well as political and religious beliefs and many personality measures were not related to self-reported coping with Covid-19. Implications for targeting those who require most help were discussed, and limitations were acknowledged.

Background:Quality of life is an important indicator in patients with breast cancer.Studies here reported that the quality of life in patients with breast cancer is low and many factors contribute to this poor quality of life.Purpose:To examine the relationships among demographic characteristics,optimism,social support,illness related factors,appraisal of illness,coping strategies and the quality of life of Chinese women with breast cancer residing in Wuhan,China.Methods:A convenience sample of 156 Chinese women with breast cancer was recruited from five teaching hospitals in Wuhan,China.Participants completed the Revised Life Orientation Test,the Perceived Social Support Scale,the Symptom Distress Scale,the Appraisal of Illness Scale,the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire,and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast.Path analysis was used to examine factors influencing quality of life.Results:Significant relationships were found between optimism,symptom distress,social support,appraisal of illness,a give-in coping mode and quality of life.optimism,social support,symptom distress,lymph node status,appraisal of illness,and a give-in coping mode accounted for 66.6%of the variance in quality of life.Conclusions:The findings of this study underscore the importance of helping women reduce symptoms distress,appraise their illness positively,use less negative coping modes,and maintain optimism,maintain good social support,because all of these factors indirectly or directly affect their quality of life.

However, over-optimism does nothing but harm to us. This passage mainly argues about why we need to be optimistic, the influence of over-optimism and what we should do.
