Artificial intelligence-driven autonomous optical networks: 3S architecture and key technologies

In the optical networks, the dynamicity, the complexity and the heterogeneity have dramatically increased owing to the deployment of advanced coherent techniques, and the optical cross-connect technologies and diverse network infrastructures pose great challenges in the optical network management and maintenance for the network operators. In this review, we propose a "3 S" architecture for AI-driven autonomous optical network, which can aid the optical networks operated in "self-aware" of network status, "self-adaptive" of network control, and "self-managed" of network operations. To support these functions, a number of artificial intelligence(AI)-driven techniques have been investigated to improve the flexibility and the reliability from the device aspect to network aspect. Adaptative erbium-doped fiber amplifier(EDFA) controlling is an example for the device aspect, which provides a power self-adaptive capability according to the network *** the link aspect, adaptive fiber nonlinearity compensation, optical monitoring performance and quality of transmission estimation are developed to monitor and alleviate the link-dependent signal impairments in an automatic way. From the network aspect, traffic prediction and network state analysis methods provide the self-awareness, while automatic resource allocation and network fault management powered by AI enhance the self-adaptiveness and self-management capabilities. Benefit from the sufficient network management data,powerful data-mining capability and matured computation units, these AI techniques have great potentials to provide autonomous features for optical networks, including the network resource scheduling and the network customization.

For future multi-dimensional optical networks, vast network resources provided by space division multiplexing and wavelength division multiplexing technologies, require new network architectures to scale up current network functions. The huge switch-granularity range requires a more dynamic way to deploy network resources. In this paper, we proposed a hardware-programmable optical network which deploys network resources according to incoming traffic requests. The proposed network supports node function programmability and node architecture adaptability, which are critical for dynamic function and resources deployments. Architecture-onDemand based node architecture adapts node architectures and also enables network function programmability by incorporating with several flexible node functions. Other enabling technologies, such as ubiquitous power monitoring and dynamic optical power management, assures the programmable optical node work *** on all these technologies, we established a hardware-programmable optical network testbed. Several use cases were demonstrated successfully, such as dynamic power equalization and optical debugging. These work verified the feasibility of hardware-programmable optical network, which dynamically allocate network resources for service provision. The proposed hardware programmable optical network will lead to a better hardware utilization and provide a possible solution for the future multi-dimensional optical network.

For the quality of service （QoS） and fairness considerations, the hop counts of various lightpaths in a wavelength division multiplexing （WDM） optical network should be short and compact. The development of multi-granularity optical switching technology has made it possible to construct various fiber topologies over a fixed physical topology. This paper describes a fiber topology design （FTD） problem, which minimizes the maximum number of required fibers in the physical links for a maximum lightpath hop count in the fiber topology. After the formular description for the FTD problem, a method was given to obtain the lower bound on the maximum number of required fibers. For large or moderate scale networks, three heuristic algorithms are given to efficiently solve the FTD problem. This study gives a new way to optimize the resource configuration performance in WDM optical networks at the topology level and proves its effectiveness via both analyses and numerical experiments.

Software defined optical networks （SDONs） integrate software defined technology with optical communication networks and represent the promising development trend of future optical networks. The key technologies for SDONs include software-defined optical transmission, switching, and networking. The main features include control and transport separation, hard-ware universalization, protocol standardization, controllable optical network, and flexible optical network applications. This paper introduces software defined optical networks and its innovation environment, in terms of network architecture, protocol extension solution, experiment platform and typical applications. Batch testing has been conducted to evaluate the performance of this SDON testbed. The results show that the SDON testbed has good scalability in different sizes. Meanwhile, we notice that controller output bandwidth has great influence on lightpath setup delay.

Due to the vulnerability of fibers in optical networks, physical- layer attacks targeting photon splitting, such as eavesdrop- ping, can potentially lead to large information and revenue loss. To enhance the existing security approaches of optical networks, a new promising technology, quantum key distribu- tion （QKD）, can securely encrypt services in optical networks, which has been a hotspot of research in recent years for its characteristic that can let clients know whether infomlation transmission has been eavesdropped or not. In this paper, we apply QKD to provide secret keys for optical networks and then introduce the architecture of QKD based optical net- work. As for the secret keys generated by QKD in optical net- works, we propose a re-transmission mechanism by analyzing the security risks in QKD-based optical networks. Numerical results indicate that the proposed re-transmission mechanism can provide strong protection degree with enhanced attack protection. Finally, we illustrated some future challenges in QKD-based optical networks.

One of the major challenges for optical network operators is related to realizing profitable networks that preserve the overall satisfaction of their end *** necessitates ensuring a controlled network resource usage while decreasing connection blocking ***,optical networks are witnessing the introduction of an increasing number of new services,each having different *** such,the evolution towards resource efficient connection setup management strategies that provide differentiated call-blocking probability becomes *** on the previous observation,we propose in this paper a novel connection setup management *** latter aims to differentiate the blocking probability among different classes of lightpath requests,while avoiding the starvation of the lower class *** main idea behind our proposal is to privilige higher class lightpaths via preemption and to protect the lower class lightpaths through *** this manner,the proposed strategy serves the double objective of minimizing the overall connection blocking probability and of realizing Quality of Service（QoS） *** previous claim is asserted through our simulation results that gauge the main benefits behind our proposed connection setup *** simulation results drawn from the National Science Foundation Network（NSFNET） and the European optical Network（EON） show that the proposed strategy achieves both differentiated and low blocking probabilities.

In this paper,we proposed a quality of transmission(QoT)prediction technique for the quality of service(QoS)link setup based on machine learning classifiers,with synthetic data generated using the transmission equations instead of the Gaussian noise(GN)*** proposed technique uses some link and signal characteristics as input *** bit error rate(BER)of the signals was compared with the forward error correction threshold BER,and the comparison results were employed as *** transmission equations approach is a better alternative to the GN model(or other similar margin-based models)in the absence of real data(i.e.,at the deployment stage of a network)or the case that real data are scarce(i.e.,for enriching the dataset/reducing probing lightpaths);furthermore,the three classifiers trained using the data of the transmission equations are more reliable and practical than those trained using the data of the GN ***,we noted that the priority of the three classifiers should be support vector machine(SVM)>K nearest neighbor(KNN)>logistic regression(LR)as shown in the results obtained by the transmission equations,instead of SVM>LR>KNN as in the results of the GN model.

In optical networks without optical amplifiers(ONWOAs) photons may fade or fail to be detected, but new photons cannot be generated. Hence, under normal conditions, only 1 → 0 errors can occur. However, in some situations, the photodetector may generate a false 0 → 1 error. This mostly occurs in cases when the dark current is higher than specified. With this in mind, in this paper,the authors present a class of codes suitable for use in ONWOAs using self-synchronous *** presented codes can correct single errors and random asymmetric(1 → 0) errors within a b-bit byte. Unlike classical codes, these codes use integer and lookup table operations. As a result, their interleaved version, implemented on a dual-core 3.0 GHz processor, achieves the theoretical throughput above the operating rate of 10 G networks.
