Laser cladding,together with laser nitriding was used to synthesize a titanium nickel intermetallic compound layer on the nickel substrate and a TiN coating on the cladding layer. During the laser cladding, Ti and Ni powders were blown into the melting pool by a six-hole coaxial nozzle powder injection system. Exothermic reactions between Ti and Ni took place in the melting pool, and a cladding layer of titanium nickel intermetallic compounds was produced. Laser nitriding in a nitrogen-rich atmosphere followed the production of the cladding layer, and formed a golden yellow TiN layer over it. An optical and a scanning electron microscope were used to investigate the microstructures and measure the thicknesses of the cladding layer and the TiN layer. Phase identification was carried out by XRD. For the nitriding sample, the microhardness profile of the clad layer was tested. The optimal process parameters of the in situ synthesis of titanium nickel intermetallic compounds were obtained.

The construction of scintillating ceramics is of great technological importance for various fundamental applications, including medical diagnostic, security inspection, resource exploration and particle physics. The chief challenge is the facile and scalable synthesis of scintillating ceramics with the desirable combination of pore-free, reliable mechanical properties and excellent scintillating performance. Here we present a pressureless glass crystallization strategy for the construction of scintillating composite with high crystallinity. The fabricated scintillating composites are featured by small optical turbidity, excellent mechanical properties, and efficient scintillating luminescence with the scintillating light yield of 15,000 pH/MeV and about 2.46 times higher than that of the commercial BGO single crystal. Moreover, the scintillating composite derived radiation detector device is successfully elaborated. The practical application for monitoring gamma ray is demonstrated and the precision of the device is less than that of the tolerable deviation of 30%. Our results suggest an innovative approach for expanding the category of scintillating material candidates, pointing to practical application in the field of radiation detection.

Zinc telluride is a versatile wide band gap semiconductor used in many applications.But it has certain limitations like large dimensions and large band gaps.Introducing alkali metal to its bulk lattice(3D)can reduce its dimensions and lanthanide can produce a red shift in the energy gap by converting it into quaternary compounds.The alkali and lanthanide incorporated quaternary zinc tellurides CsLnZnTe_(3)(Ln=La,Pr,Nd and Sm)form layered crystal structure in which_(∞)^(2)[LnZnTe_(3)]-layers are separated by Cs+layer.The famous lanthanide contraction is experimental both from lattice constants and bond lengths.The calculated band gaps are 2.26,2.28,2.12,2.05 eV for CsLaZnTe_(3),CsPrZnTe_(3),CsNdZnTe_(3) and CsSmZnTe_(3),respectively.These compounds show direct band gap nature.The energy band gaps of these compounds have not been evaluated yet both experimentally and theoretically.Energy loss functions,refractive index and dielectric functions were also calculated to explore the potential applications of CsLnZnTe_(3) in optoelectronic devices.

The optical and thermal properties of a new class of fluoroindate glass with different erbium contents were investigated via Raman,transmission,and fluorescence spectroscopies,fluorescence decay curve analysis,and differential scanning calorimetry.The strength parameters of the samples were calculated using the Judd-Ofelt theory.The mid-infrared luminescence properties of erbium-doped fluoroindate glasses were studied,and a strong emission at 2.7μm was obtained.Compared with the traditional ZBLAN glass,this glass has excellent emission properties,especially a longer fluorescence lifetime(7.09 ms)and larger emission cross-section(6.95×10^(-21) cm^(2))at 2.7μm.The results indicate that fluoroindate glass is an attractive host for mid-infrared lasers and as a gain medium for optical amplifier applications.

Structural geometry, electronic band gaps, density of states, optical and mechanical properties of double perovskite halides Cs2InBiX6(X = F, Cl, Br, I) are investigated using the density functional theory. These compounds possess genuine perovskite stoichiometry, evaluated using various geometry-based indices like tolerance factor, octahedral factor, and formation energy. The fundamental electronic band gaps are direct and valued in the range 0.80–2.79 e V. These compounds have narrow band gaps(except Cs2InBiX6) due to strong orbital coupling of the cations. The valence band maximum and conduction band minimum are confirmed to be essentially of In 5 s and Bi 6 p characters, respectively. The splitting of Bi 6 p bands due to strong spin-orbit coupling causes reduction in the band gaps. These compounds have large dispersion in their bands and very low carrier effective masses. The substitution of halogen atoms has great influence on the optical properties. The mechanical properties reveal that Cs2InBiX6(X = F, Cl, Br, I) satisfy the stability criteria in cubic structures.

Ytterbium and rare earth ions(RE=Y,Gd,La)codoped CaF_(2)-SrF_(2)single crystals(3 at%Yb,6 at%RE:CaF_(2)-SrF_(2))were fabricated by temperature gradient technology(TGT).All the space groups remain the same Fm3m as that of Yb:CaF_(2)-SrF_(2).The lattice parameter a,unit cell volume V,as well as bond length of Ca/Sr-F and F-F increase in the sequence of rare-earth ions radius Y^(3+)optical parameter(δem×t,0.52×10^(20)cm^(2)·ms),lower Isat(3.68 kW/cm^(2))and^min(0.50 kW/cm^(2))at 1038 nm indicating the potential application in high power laser.Low phonon energy of CaF_(2)-SrF_(2)is 302 cm^(-1)which is located between those of CaF_(2)and SrF_(2)as measured by Raman spectra.It is believed that ytterbium and rare earth ions(RE=Y^(3+),Cd^(3+),La^(3+))codoped CaF_(2)-SrF_(2)eutectic solid-solution is promising for high-power and wavelength-tunable solid-state lasers.

Influences of annealing temperature on properties of Fe^2+:ZnSe thin films deposited by electron beam evaporation and their applications to Q-switched fiber laser

Fe^2+:ZnSe thin films are prepared on sapphire substrate at room temperature by electron beam evaporation and then annealed in vacuum(about 1×10^-4 Pa)at different temperatures.The influences of thermal annealing on the structural and optical properties of these films such as grain size and optical transmittance are investigated.The x-ray diffraction patterns show that the Fe2+:ZnSe thin film is preferred to be oriented along the(111)plane at different annealing temperatures.After the film is annealed,the full-width-at-half-maximum(FWHM)of the x-ray diffraction peak profile(111)of the film decreases and its crystal quality is improved.Scanning electron microscope images show that the films are more dense after being annealed.Finally,the sample is used as a saturable absorber in ZBLAN fiber laser.The annealed Fe^2+:ZnSe thin films can be used to realize stable Q-switching modulation on ZBLAN fiber laser.The results demonstrate that the Fe2+:ZnSe thin film is a promising material for generating the high-power pulses of mid-infrared Q-switched fiber lasers.
