Essential oils and functional herbs for healthy aging

As total life expectancy increases, the prevalence of age-related diseases such as diabetes and Alzheimer's disease is also increasing. Many hypotheses about Alzheimer's disease have been developed, including cholinergic neuron damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation. Acetylcholine is a major neurotransmitter in the brain and cholinergic deficits leads to cognitive dysfunction and decline. Recent studies have linked diabetes as a risk factor in developing Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia. The incidence of patients with type II diabetes and increased levels and activity of α-amylase is higher in patients with dementia. It has been shown that aromatherapy with essential oils from the mint family can improve cognitive performance in Alzheimer's disease patients. Selected monoterpenoids from these essential oils are reported to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, both in vitro and in vivo. Terpenoids are small, fat-soluble organic molecules that can transfer across nasal mucosa if inhaled, or penetrate through the skin after topical application, enter into the blood and cross the blood-brain barrier. Recent evidence supports the idea that the common constituents of essential oils also inhibit α-amylase, a starch digestive enzyme that plays an important role in the control of diabetes. The mint family is a fragrant plant family that contains most of the culinary herbs found in the Mediterranean diet. The Mediterranean diet is considered to be one of the healthiest diets in the world, and is found to be beneficial not only for the heart but also for the brain. Herbs used in this diet are rich in antioxidants that can prevent oxidative damage caused by free radicals. However, our study shows that they also contain biologically active compounds with potent α-amylase and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activities. The present paper studies the mineralogy and geochemistry of a geological section in Jianghan basin. Widely distributed immature oils in this basin have been shown to relate to the carbonate depositional stage of salt lake sedimentation cycle. It is concluded that only when the content of organic carbon in the rocks is taken into account, is it meaningful to calculate the immature oil in the source rocks.

Evaluation of antibacterial activity and synergistic effect between antibiotic and the essential oils of some medicinal plants

Cytotoxicity and penetration enhancement activity of essential oils from warming the interior medicinals with hot or warm property in terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine

OBJECTIVE: To investigate on the cytotoxicity and penetration enhancement effect of essential oils(EOs) from warming the interior medicinals(WIM)from Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM).METHODS: EOs were extracted from WIM of Bichengqie(Litseae Fructus), Dingxiang(Flos Syzygii Aromatici), Huajiao(Pericorpium Zanthoxyli Bungeani), and Xiaohuixiang(Fructus Foeniculi) with warm nature, and Ganjiang(Rhizoma Zingiberis),Gaoliangjiang(Rhizoma Alpinioe Officinari), Rougui(Cortex Cinnamomi Cassioe), and Wuzhuyu(Fructus Evodiae Rutoecorpae) with hot nature; *** chemical compositions were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS). The cytotoxicity of the extracted eight EOs on HaCaT cells was measured and compared. Moreover, analyses of cell cycle and cell apoptosis were performed to investigate the cytotoxic *** transdermal penetration enhancement effects of the extracted eight EOs on ibuprofen were further compared by the modified Franz diffusion cell ***: The most abundant constituents in the extracted eight EOs were determined to be monoterpenes, especially oxygen containing *** HaCaT cell cytotoxicity of EOs from WIM with hot nature were significantly(P = 0.020) higher than that with warm nature. Both ginger oil and zanthoxylum oil significantly induced G0/G1 phase arrestment in HaCaT cell cycle. For ginger oil from WIM with hot nature and zanthoxylum oil from WIM with warm nature, the main mechanisms of the cytotoxicity were found to be the induction of cellular necrosis and the cellular apoptosis, respectively. Furthermore, most of the tested EOs showed remarkable penetration enhancement activity on ibuprofen. However, no statistical significance(P =0.18) was found between penetration enhancement activity of EOs from WIM with warm nature and EOs from WIM with hot ***: With the enhanced penetration activity, the extracted EOs from the WIM demonstrated their significant effect of the cytotoxicity

Impact of essential oils and organic acids on the growth performance,digestive functions and immunity of broiler chickens

The aim of the experiment was to study the effects of feeding blends of sorbic acid, fumaric acid, and thymol(EOA) on growth performance, digestive functions, and immunity of broiler chickens. A total of 640 one-day-old male Cobb 500 chicks with similar BW(41.8 ± 0.6 g) were randomly divided into 4dietary treatment groups consisting of 10 replicates with 16 birds per replicate and fed a basal diet until d 42(CON) or diets with 0.15 g/kg enramycin during the grower period(AG), 0.30 g/kg EOA during the grower period(EG), or 0.30 g/kg EOA during the finisher period(EF). At d 42, the feed conversion ratio was reduced(P < 0.05) for birds in EG group compared with other groups. Birds in EG group showed a higher villus height of the duodenum and jejunum and muscular layers of the duodenum and ileum than birds in CON group(P < 0.05). Compared with other groups, crypt depth of the jejunum and ileum was markedly increased(P < 0.05) by EOA supplementation during the finisher period at d 42. The EOA supplementation during grower period increased significantly lipase, trypsin and chymotrypsin activities of the duodenum at d 21 and 42, as well as lipase and trypsin at d 21, and trypsin and chymotrypsin at d 42 in the jejunum, and trypsin and chymotrypsin activities of the ileum at d 21 compared to the control diet(P < 0.05). Birds of EG and EF groups showed a higher(P < 0.05) spleen index than birds of CON group. The level of secretory immunoglobulin A in duodenal and ileal mucosa was increased(P < 0.05) in EF group at d 42 compared with other groups. In conclusion, the results indicate that EOA can be effectively applied in broiler diets, especially during the grower phase by improving intestinal morphology and increasing digestive enzyme activity.

Anti-inflammatory activity of the essential oils of Cymbopogon validus(Stapf) Stapf ex Burtt Davy from Eastern Cape, South Africa

Objective: To evaluate the essential oil composition and the anti-inflammatory activity of Cymbopogon validus(C. validus) leaves and flowers. Methods: A total of 300 g of fresh or dry(leaves and flowers) of C. validus were cut into small pieces and subjected to hydro-distillation method for approximately 5 h using the Clevenger apparatus. The extracted essential oils were then used for testing the anti-inflammatory activity. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by using egg-albumin induced paw edema. Results: The extracted oils had the following yields 2.2% for fresh leaves, 2.0% for dry leaves and 2.4% v/w for dry flowers. GCMS results revealed that the oils contained artemisia ketone(37.5%), linalool(3.2%-29.6%), northujane(4.4%-16.8%), verbenone(13.5%), naphthalene(1.7%-9.6%), δ-cadinene(0.5%-8.1%), hedycaryol(5.4%-7.6%) and α-eudesmol(6.5%-6.7%) as the major constituents. C. validus essential oils showed significant(Poils.

Designing Microalgal oils

Vegetative oils are closely associated with our daily life. They are widely used in food, both in cooking and as nutritional supplements, as well as in cosmetics and as fuels. Contrary to animal fats, vegetative oils are mixtures of liquid triacylglycerols (TAGs) with a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs). However, in many higher plants, only their fruits and/ or seeds contain a significant amount of oils that are valuable for industrial utilization. Microalgae are single-cell photosynthetic organisms. They contain all the oil-producing machinery present in higher plants and are original oil producers on Earth. Importantly, they can be cultivated on a large scale for production of microalgal oils with rare long-chain polyunsaturated FAs (LC-PUFAs) such as omega-3 FAs and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), which have health ben efits. The geno mes of human and vertebrate animals do not encode enzymes for synthesizing LC-PUFAs, and thus they have to acquire these so-called "essential FAs" via diet.

Control of Tetranychus urticae Koch by extracts of three essential oils of chamomile,marjoram and Eucalyptus

Objective:To evaluate the acaricidal activity of extracts of three essential oils of chamomile,marjoram and Eucalyptwi against Tetranychus urtiaie(***.)***:Extracts of three essential oils of chamomile,marjoram and Eucalyptus with different concentrations(0.5%,1.0%,2.0%,3.0%and 4.0%)were used to control *** ***:The results showed that chamomile(Chamomilla recutita)represented the most potent efficient acaricidal agent against Tetranychus followed by marjoram(Marjorana hortensis)and *** LC_(50)values of chamomile,marjoram and Eucalyptus for adults were 0.65,1.84 and 2.18,respectively and for eggs 1.17,6.26 and 7.33,*** of enzymes including glutathione-Stxansferase,esterase(α-esterase andβ-esterase)and alkaline phosphatase in susceptible mites were determined and activities of enzymes involved in the resistance of acaricides were *** enzyme was significantly decreased at LC_(50)of both chamomile and marjoram compared with positive *** chromatography-mass spectrometer(CC-MS)proved that the major compositions of Chamomilla recutita areα-bisabolol oxide A(35.251%),and trans-3-farersene(7.758%),while the main components of Marjorana hortensis are terpincne-4-ol(23.860%),p-cymene(23.404%)and sabinene(10.904%).Conclusions:It can be concluded that extracts of three essential oils of chamomile,marjoram and Eucalyptus possess acaricidal activity against ***.
