Two series of solid complexes of europium and terbium with biphenyl 4-carboxylic acid and phen were synthesized and characterized in this report. Their elemental analysis, molar conductivities and TG-DTA studies indicate that the complexes have the composition of Eu(phen)L3·1/2H2o, Eu0.5RE0.5(phen) L3·1/2H2o; Tb (phen) L3·H2o and Tb0.5 RE0.5(Phen)L3·1/2H2o. (RE = Y3+, La3+ and Gd3+; L = biphenyl 4-carboxylic acid; phen = o-phenanthroline). The studies of their IR, UV 1H NMR and molar conductivities demonstrate that biphenyl 4-carboylic acid is bounded with RE (III ) ion. Rare earth ions coordinate with two nitrogen atoms of phen molecules directly in these rare earth complexes. The fluorescence spectra and fluorescence lifetimes of the rare earth complexes show that the fluorescent intensity and lifetime of a series of europium complexes are longer than those of the series of terbium complexes as having the some ligands. There are better fluorescent intensity and lifetime of hetero-nuclear rare earth complexes than homo-nuclear rare earth complexes for europium complexes. The fluorescence emission intensity of Eu3 + is raised by inert fluorescent rare earth ions (Y3+ , Gd3+ and La3+ ), but in Tb3+ hetero-nuclear rare earth complexes the intensity of Tb3+ ions are quenched by the inert fluorescent rare earth ions.

Five novel ternary complexes of rare earth ions with L-Aspartic acid (Asp) and o-phenanthroline (Phen) were synthesized in ethanol aqueous solution. Their compositions were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, FT-IR, Raman, UV-VIS and TG-DTA. The compositions of the complexes were confirmed to be: RE( Asp)3PhenCl3·3H2o (RE: Ce3+ , Pr3+ , Nd3+ , Sm3+ , Er3+ ). The antibacterial activity test shows that all these complexes exhibit excellent antibacterial ability against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. The antimicrobial spectrum of the complexes are broad.

Five novel ternary complexes of the rare earth ions with o-phenanthroline（Phen） and Schiff base salicylaldehyde L-phenyla- lanine（KHL） were synthesized in ethanol. Their compositions were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, ^1H NMR, FT-IR, and Raman spectra. The formulas of the complexes were verified to be RE（L）（Phen）Cl（H2o）（RE=La^3＋, Ce^3＋, Nd^3＋, Er^3＋, and Gd^3＋; L=Schiff base salicylaldehyde L-phenylalanine; phen=o-phenanthroline）. Methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium （MTT） colorimetry and flow cytometry were used to test the anticancer effect of the complexes with K562 tumor cell. The research showed that the complexes could inhibit K562 tumor cell＇s growth, generation, and induce apoptosis. The inhibition ratio was accelerated by increasing the dosage, and it had significant positive correlation with the medication dosage.

Devising a desirable adsorbent for efficiently selective capture of Ag(Ⅰ) from wastewater has attracted much attention but faced with huge challenges. Herein, a novel linear o-phenanthroline-based polymer L-PRL was prepared via chemical oxidative polymerization for the adsorption of Ag(Ⅰ). The maximum adsorption capacity for Ag(Ⅰ) by L-PRL is 325.8 mg/g at pH 0. In addition, L-PRL owes ascendant selectivity for Ag(Ⅰ) from aqueous solutions containing various interfering metal ions of Pb(Ⅱ), Co(Ⅱ), Ni(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ)and Fe(Ⅲ). Multiple characterizations of FT-IR and XPS uncover that the N groups on L-PRL act as adsorption sites to coordinate with Ag(Ⅰ). Density functional theory(DFT) calculations further evidence the mechanism that L-PRL is provided with the admirable adsorptivity and selectivity for Ag(Ⅰ). It is mainly attributed to the most stable complexes of L-PRL with Ag(Ⅰ), which possesses shortest Ag-N bond length compared with other heavy metal ions. Furthermore, 93.5% of initial adsorption capacity is reserved after four continuous regeneration cycles, indicating that L-PRL is equipped with superior recyclability and durability, and L-PRL is capable of removing Ag(Ⅰ) in low-concentration actual Ag(Ⅰ)-containing wastewater completely. This study shed light on the rational design of polymer adsorbents and in-depth insight into selective removal of aqueous Ag(Ⅰ).

Their composition were characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, IR, Raman, UV-VIS, TG-DTA. The compositions of the complexes were confirmed to be RE （ Phe ）3Phen Cl3 · 3H2o （ RE = La^3＋, Ce^3＋, Pr^3＋, Nd^3＋, Sm^3＋, Eu^3＋, Er^3＋, Y^3＋）. The antibacterial activities testing indicates that all these solid ternary complexes have antibacterial ability against Escherich coli, Staphy lococcus aureus, Candida albican （MIC are about 65 × 10^-4%, 15 × 10^-3%, 4 × 10^-2%, respectively）.

A mixed-ligands complex with the formula of [Cu(R-lact)(o-phen)(H2o)]·4H2o was synthesized by the reaction of copper carbonate with racemic lactic acid(RS-H2lact), and then with o-phenanthroline(o-phen) in ethanol-water(95%) solution. one of the two obtained compounds was dark blue column single crystal and was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectrum and X-ray single crystal diffraction. The crystal belongs to triclinic system with space group P1, a=7.2825(5), b=11.7322(8), c=12.1194(8), α=65.8280(10)°, β=84.2120(10)°,γ=75.3290(10)°, V=913.88(11)3, Z=2, Dc=1533kg·m-3, Mr=421.89, μ(Mo K\α)=1.240mm-1,λ =0.71073, the final R =0.0483 and ωR =0.1199 [I>2σ(I)] for 3120 observed reflections,F(000)=438. The copper atom is five coordinated with the distorted square pyramid *** five coordinated atoms are two oxygen atoms of depronated hydroxyl group and carboxyl of H2 lact, two nitrogen atom of o-phen and one oxygen atom of water molecule.
