Psychometric evaluation of Iranian version of nursing faculty’s incivility questionnaire

Objective:Faculty incivility is a growing problem in nursing schools that disrupts the learning process and affects nursing care of patients.Fostering and managing faculty incivility requires knowing this problem using a valid and reliable instrument.The purpose of this research was to evaluate the validity and reliability of the faculty’s perceived incivility questionnaire in the Iranian community.Methods:In this methodological study,the participants involved were 357 nursing students.They were selected between October and December 2019.The faculty’s perceived incivility questionnaire was evaluated in terms of content and construct validity.McDonald’s omega and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were calculated.Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to evaluate the construct validity of the questionnaire.Results:The content validity index(CVI)was 0.86-0.91 for the items and 0.87 for the whole instrument.In factor analysis,two factors of violent and irresponsible behaviors were extracted.These factors explained>41.769%of the variance.Model fit indices(Parsimonious Comparative Fit Index[PCFI]=0.783,Parsimonious Normed Fit Index[PNFI]=0.756,root mean square error of approximation[RMSEA]=0.051,Goodness-of-Fit Index[GFI]=0.955,Adjusted Goodness-of-Fit Index[AGFI]=0.932,Comparative Fit Index[CFI]=0.955,χ^(2)/df=2.26)indicated the proportion of factors.Internal consistency was 0.87-0.93.Conclusions:Faculty’s perceived incivility questionnaire is a valid and reliable tool with two factors that can be used to evaluate the incivility in Iranian faculty members.

Professional values in nursing students in Jordan:baccalaureate nursing students’perception

Objective:Baccalaureate degree curricula consist of several professional values required for nursing students,which are taught in many ways.This study aimed to explore the perception of baccalaureate Jordanian nursing students regarding professional values and to assess the relationship between students’demographics and their perception of professional values.Methods:The study design was a descriptive,cross-sectional correlational design.A convenience sample of 182 Jordanian undergraduate nursing students enrolled at one of the most prominent universities in Jordan who completed and submitted a self-administered Nurses’Professional Values Scale(NPVS)was considered for this study.Results:The NPVS total score ranged from 37 to 130,with a relatively high total score mean(99.68 with a mean of 3.83 out of 5).The highest score domain in NPVS was“Justice”with a mean of 3.97,while the lowest ranked domain was“Activism”with a mean of 3.69.The correlation coefficient showed no statistically significant correlation between age nor accumulative students’average with a total score of Nurses Professional Values Scale-revised(NPVS-R)and its subdomains.The t test results showed that gender and type of students’enrollment(regular vs.upgrading)did not affect the means of NPVS-R and its subdomains.But differences were found to be statistically significant between the means of first year students and fourth year students in the total score of NPVS-R.Conclusions:Findings of the study alert nursing educators to pay more attention to the importance of promoting the values related to“activism”and“professionalism”among nursing students.Suggestions for enhancing the roles of peer supervision and providing peer review to colleagues would contribute to improving nursing students’performance and raising self-awareness because when nursing educators pay more attention to the items of these domains,better future nursing professionals,leaders,and researchers can be gained.Also,understanding nursing students’perceptions of the importance of prof

Smartphone dependency and its impact on academics among medical and nursing students: A cross-sectional study

Objective:This study aimed to assess smartphone dependency and its impact on academics among medical and nursing students.Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional study was carried out on Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery(MBBS)and Bachelor of Science in nursing(BScN)students in a medical teaching institute.The Smartphone Dependency Scale and self-structured questionnaire on impact of smartphone on academics were used to assess smartphone dependency and its impact on academics.A total of 436 students were selected using the total enumerative sampling technique.Data were analyzed using the descriptive(frequency,percentage,mean,and standard deviation)and inferential(t-test,Chi-square test)statistics.Results:The mean age of students was 20.6±1.29 years,81%were females,and the mean body mass index score was 21.59±3.41 kg/m2.The mean impact on academics and smartphone dependency scores was 19.92±7.01 and 48.58±11.46,respectively.The impact on academics had a significant association with student category(P<0.001)and gender(P<0.001).A significant association was found between the impact on academics(P=0.003)and smartphone dependency(P=0.05)with studying class.Conclusion:The use of smartphones is more among medical students.Students studying in the first and second years are found to be more dependent on smartphone,which caused a serious impact on their academics.Smart appliances have become mandatory in this era of technology,and it is not possible to stop its usage but negative impact of smartphones on students’academic performance needs to be addressed.Therefore,it is mandatory to organize educational seminars and workshops to promote the appropriate use of smartphones.

Application of a perioperative nursing strategy in the surgical treatment of elderly patients: a narrative review

With the steady increase of older people in society, a progressively greater number of patients belonging to the geriatric group need surgical treatment. Since elderly patients with reduced physiological reserve and organ failure often have chronic diseases, geriatric syndrome, and other clinical problems, the perioperative nursing of elderly patients is more complicated. Therefore, we need to comprehensively consider clinical issues, such as patients’ preoperative status, surgical risks, and postoperative quality of life and life expectancy, and conduct comprehensive evaluations and holistic, individualized, and continuous nursing and therapy through the participation of interdisciplinary teams to achieve better curative effects. Here, the perioperative nursing of elderly patients is reviewed, including preoperative evaluation and nursing, intraoperative management, and postoperative nursing.

Perioperative nursing of a newborn with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome

Objective:To explore the perioperative nursing of a newborn with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome.Methods:We observed the blood glucose of the child and prevent infection of omphalocele before transpor tation and before the operation;after the operation,we performed airway nursing,blood glucose monitoring,urination observation,and tumor marker monitoring;finally,at the time of discharge from the hospital,we provided health education.Results:After a series of perioperative nursing measures,the child was discharged smoothly from hospital 34 d after operation.Conclusions:Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome is a rare congenital malformation.Timely and accurate observation and evaluation of the child during perioperative period and targeted nursing measures can effectively reduce or avoid the occurrence of postoperative complications.

Health-care professionals acquire negative and discriminatory attitudes toward mental health.Psychiatric nursing is considered a less valuable field and they choose to work in a psychiatric setting only when there are no other employment opportunities.The global burden of disease study(2017)shows that 197.3 million people had mental disorders in India and one in seven Indians were affected by mental disorders.Extending the theory and clinical posting hours in psychiatry helps to promote a sense of preparedness and reducing the negative stereotypes can contribute to develop an interest in a future career in psychiatric nursing.Mental health is the foundation for the well-being and effective functioning of an individual.They play a plethora of roles such as case manager(clinical nurse),mentor,lecturer,researcher,policymaker,counselor,and clinical psychologist.Hence,it is the right time to choose this right field,which has a lot of opportunities.

To the Editor: Sepsis and septic shock are a leading cause of intensive care unit (ICU) admissions and induce significant morbidity and mortality.[1,2] Early propitiate antibiotics administration is significantly associated with improved survival in sepsis and septic shock[3,4] which is recommended by the international guidelines.[5] However, the compliance to sepsis protocols remains very low.[6] Nurses, who play a vital role in carrying out physician orders, are likely associated with the compliance to empiric antibiotic administration. Phua et al[7] showed that nurses occupy an essential and conscious position as brokers of doctors’ antibiotic decisions. In addition, other studies also demonstrated that nurse-led protocols were an effective, safe, and sustainable method for achieving early antibiotic administration in patients with suspected febrile neutropenia.[8] Therefore, we performed a retrospective cohort study to confirm the effect of nursing staff capacity on the compliance of nurses to empiric antibiotic treatment in patients with septic shock.

Effect of nursing intervention based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs in patients with coronary heart disease interventional surgery

BACKGROUND It is very important to provide effective nursing programs to regulate the physical and mental state of patients and to improve treatment compliance after interventional surgery for coronary heart disease(CHD).AIM To explore the effect of a nursing intervention based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory on patients with CHD undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention.METHODS Ninety-four patients with CHD undergoing interventional surgery in our hospital from January 2020 to February 2021 were randomly divided into a research group(n=47)and a control group(n=47).The control group received routine nursing,and the research group received a nursing intervention based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory.The scores of self-efficacy,negative emotion[depression(SDS),anxiety(SAS)],intervention compliance(standardized medication,moderate exercise,healthy diet,and regular review),and nursing satisfaction were calculated before and after intervention for the two groups.RESULTS Before intervention,there was no significant difference in the scores of disease general management self-efficacy,disease management self-efficacy,and total self-efficacy between the two groups(P=0.795,0.479,and 0.659,respectively).After intervention,these three scores in the research group were higher than those in the control group(Pnursing job satisfaction in the research group(93.62%)was higher than that in the control group(78.72%)(P=0.036).CONCLUSION A nursing program based on Maslow’

nursing experience of digestive function maintenance in 25 patients after thoracic and abdominal aortic eplacement

Objective: To explore the nursing experience of digestive function after thoracic and abdominal aortic replacement in order to promote the better recovery. Methods: 25 patients undergoing thoracic and abdominal aortic replacement were managed after operation. First, the fluid volume and blood pressure were controlled, and the use of vasoactive drugs was strictly regulated to ensure the perfusion of abdominal organs. And the enteral nutrition is carried out as early as possible to accelerate the recovery of gastrointestinal function of patients;And multimode analgesia is adopted to promote patients to get out of bed as early as possible to recover gastrointestinal peristalsis;At the same time, anticoagulation management is strengthened to prevent microthrombosis. Results: 23 of 25 patients after thoracic and abdominal aortic replacement recovered well and discharged smoothly. 2 Cases died,1 case died of hemorrhagic shock due to rupture of abdominal great vessels, and 1 case died of multiple organ failure due to septic shock. Conclusion: To strengthen the maintenance of digestive function, ensure the blood perfusion of gastrointestinal tract, get out of bed early, promote the gastrointestinal peristalsis and implement enteral nutrition as early as possible, can promote the recovery of gastrointestinal function, accelerate the rehabilitation process and shorten the hospitalization time.
