Nursing practice has been expanded greatly with time passing by.One innovative form of nursing practice is nurse-led care.The term“nurse-led care/service”has been introduced in nursing discipline for years as early as in 1960s[1].Later,several nurse-led services were reported in 1980s and 1990s[2-7].The common characteristics in these units were that the nurses provided additional things to improve patients'care,and the standard of practice was extremely high[8].The accelerating development of nurse-led care was triggered by the health care system reform in United Kingdom(UK)around 2000.In 1999,the UK government document‘Making a difference’was published[9],under the pressure of redesigning services to reduce waiting time and medical cost and to meet shortfalls in junior medical staffing[10].Since then,nurse-led care has been reported in increasing studies[11].

Objective:This study aimed to describe the conflict management styles and identify factors affecting the conflict management styles of nurse managers.Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted by interviewing nurse managers with a questionnaire,including the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory-II Form B,used to assess an individual’s approach to conflict management across five styles:cooperating,competing,compromising,obliging,and avoiding.Results:A total of 30 nurse managers participated in this study.The mean scores of the cooperating style were the highest at 4.3±0.4,followed by a compromising style at 3.4±0.5,an avoiding style at 3.1±0.6,an accommodating style at 2.9±0.7,and a competing style at 2.8±0.8(χ^(2)=66.624,Pnurse managers(3.2±0.6)were higher than those of master’s degree nurse managers(2.7±0.6)(P=0.036).nurse managers over 40 years old,holding a managerial position for≥10 years,and frequent conflict handling rated higher mean scores for the cooperating style than their counterparts(Pnurse managers.Factors affecting the conflict management style were age,education level,and experience in management and conflict handling.These findings are useful for developing interventions that enhance the competencies of nurse managers in conflict management.

Factors associated with premenstrual syndrome of emergency nurse: A multicenter study in China

Objective:To study the factors associated with premenstrual syndrome(PMS)in emergency department(ED)nurses.Methods:A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in female ED nurses in China.Data gathering questionnaires included the Daily Record of Severity of Problems,Chinese nurses Stressor Scale,Social Support Rating Scale,and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale.All questionnaires were used to assess the symptoms prospectively over 2 months.Results:A total of 289 ED nurses were recruited.The incidence of PMS was 67.47%.The most common symptoms were tiredness(76.90%),anger(76.90%),restlessness(75.40%),snoring(69.20%).Univariate analysis showed that the BMI and occupational stress score was significantly higher,and the age was significantly younger in the PMS group compared with the non-PMS group.According to the multiple linear regression,the symptoms of PMS were positively associated with the occupational stress score and anxiety score,and negatively with the level of education received.Conclusions:occupational stress,anxiety,and education level may associated with the occurrence of PMS in ED nurses.

Agrarian occupational health is a neglected primary health-care service in India.A nurse-led health promotion program is planned based on a Conceptual Model for the Occupational Health nurse Specialist prepared by Ms.Janice Dees(1984)inspired from Orem’s self-care theory.The interventions included are range of motion exercise,progressive muscle relaxation technique,foot and palm massage,and literacy on safety practices.The wellness of field farmers is expected by following this program plan.

A healthy nurse work environment is a workplace that is safe,empowering,and satisfying.Many research studies were conducted on nurse work environments in the last decade;however,it lacks an overview of these research studies.The purpose of this review is to identify,evaluate,and summarize the major foci of studies about nurse work environments in the United States published between January 2005 and December 2017 and provide strategies to improve nurse work environments.Databases searched included MEDLINE via PubMed,CINAHL,PsycINFO,Nursing and Allied Health,and the Cochrane Library.The literature search followed the PRISMA guideline.Fifty-four articles were reviewed.Five major themes emerged:1)Impacts of healthy work environments on nurses'outcomes such as psychological health,emotional strains,job satisfaction,and retention;2)Associations between healthy work environments and nurse interpersonal relationships at workplaces,job performance,and productivity;3)Effects of healthy work environments on patient care quality;4)Influences of healthy work environments on hospital accidental safety;and 5)Relationships between nurse leadership and healthy work environments.This review shows that nurses,as frontline patient care providers,are the foundation for patient safety and care quality.Promoting nurse empowerment,engagement,and interpersonal relationships at work is rudimental to achieve a healthy work environment and quality patient care.Healthier work environments lead to more satisfied nurses who will result in better job performance and higher quality of patient care,which will subsequently improve healthcare organizations'financial viability.Fostering a healthy work environment is a continuous effort.

A cross-sectional study on nurse turnover intention and influencing factors in Jiangsu Province, China

Background:nurses'turnover has been a major concern globally,which is strongly influenced by nurses'intent to leave.However,only a few large sample studies on the predictive factors associated with nurses'turnover intention were conducted in Jiangsu Province.This study mainly aims to examine the level and factors that influence nurses to leave their work in Jiangsu Province of Eastern China.Methods:A cross-sectional survey of 1978 nurses was conducted at 48 hospitals in 14 key cities throughout Jiangsu Province.The turnover intention in nurses was measured by the scale of intent to leave the profession.The work environment of nurses was measured by the Chinese version of the Practice Environment Scale.A multiple linear regression model was applied to analyse the factors associated with turnover intention.Results:The resignation rate of nurses in the hospitals of Jiangsu Province ranged from 0.64%to 12.71%in 2016.The mean scores were 15.50±3.44 for turnover intention,and 3.06±0.51 for work environment.Involvement in hospital affairs,resource adequacy,age,professional title,year(s)working,employment type and education level were the predictors of nurse intent to leave(Pnurses in hospitals must be improved in staffing and resource and nurses'involvement in hospital affairs.The current study corroborates that nurses have high turnover intention.Thus,effective measures are needed to improve nurse accomplishment,professional status,participation in hospital affairs and career planning to reduce their turnover intention.

Background:The number of countries where nurses are legally permitted to prescribe has grown rapidly due to a variety of external and internal forces.Despite its international popularity,nurse prescribing has not yet been implemented in China widely.Objective:The intent of this paper is to review the current international literature regarding nurse prescribing so as to explore the necessity and possibility of implementation of nurse prescribing in China and classify the research gap.Methods:Eight electronic databases including Embase,SpringerLink,EBSCO,CINAHL,Medline,Wiley,Science Direct,CochraneLibrary were electronically searched to identify related peer-review articles published in the English language only from 2007 to 2017.Relative references found from the identified studies were traced back to ensure that potentially eligible articles were included.Results:Thirty-three publications which met the inclusion criteria were included in this literature review.The literature shows that not only could nurse prescribing provide quicker service,improvements in quality,but also could make better utilization of the nurses' professional skills and increase nurses' autonomy.Moreover,the barriers of nurse prescribing are explored to identify the factors that may facilitate the success of its implementation.Conclusion:The review advises that nurses' views towards nurse prescribing have played a significant role in the success of nurse prescribing.While no literature regarding Chinese nurses' attitudes towards nurse prescribing could be identified,it is imperative to examine their attitudes on it.This would help Chinese healthcare policymakers ascertain the necessity of the introduction of nurse prescribing and provide them with valuable information for service planning.

Objectives:Clinical experience is an essential component of nurse practitioner(NP)education that relies heavily on preceptors.Recruitment and retention of preceptors is challenging due to many variables that can affect NP education and practice.We surveyed Canadian NP programs to understand their preceptorship structures,how they support preceptorship,and to identify gaps and challenges to recruitment and retention of preceptors.Methods:An 18-item survey,developed by the NP Education Interest Group,was distributed to 24 universities across 10 Canadian provinces.Construct validity and reliability was assessed by experienced NPs and NP faculty.Data were analyzed using relative frequency statistics and thematic analysis.Participants consisted of administrative staff and/or faculty designated as responsible for recruitment and retention of NP preceptors.Results:Seventeen returned surveys were analyzed and demonstrated more similarities than differences across Canada's NP programs,particularly related to barriers affecting recruitment and retention of preceptors.The findings identified NP programs have too many students for the number of available clinical sites/preceptors,resulting in overutilization,burnout,or refusal to take students.Competition with other health disciplines for clinical placements was identified as a challenge to placements.Respondents commented they lack time to recruit,provide follow-up,offer support,or seek preceptors'feedback due to competing work demands.They identified the need for standardized funding for preceptor remuneration and recognition across the country.Conclusion:The findings suggest the need for exploring a wider intraprofessional collaboration among graduate NP programs/faculty,clinical placement sites,and NPs to facilitate the recruitment and retention of preceptors.

“Should research using animal models be included in the field of nursing science study?”When asked by colleagues during her Ph.D.program,Sharon G.Casavant,a student at the University of Connecticut School of Nursing,realized she was not prepared to answer.This question inspired her to embark on a self-reflection journey regarding nursing roles and subsequently create the nurses’Role Integration Model adapted from the Neuman Systems Model.In this model,Casavant identifies research such as investigation using animal models,collecting human clinical biomarkers,and clinical data analysis as primary prevention under the heading Science of Nursing,reflecting the nurse’s work.
