Geothermal Evidence of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic Lithospheric Thinning in the Liaohe Depression

The Liaohe （辽河） depression is an important part of the Bohai （渤海） Bay Basin, and the Bohai Bay Basin located in the center of Hthospheric destruction and thinning in the eastern north china craton. The north china Hthospheric thinning activities have been verified from evidences of structural geology, petrology, geochemistry and geophysics, but there are still some controversies on their timing, mechanism and controlling factors. The sedimentary basin is a thin-bedded geologic unit with a limited distribution in the upper lithosphere, and its formation and evolution represent the shal- low response of the deep geodynamic process. Therefore, its thermal evolution is closely related to the deep dynamic conditions. In this article, the Mesozoic-Cenozoic thermal history of the Liaohe depres- sion is reconstructed using the vitrinite reflectance and apatite fission track data. Meanwhile ＂thermal＂ ilthospheric thicknesses in the Mesozoic and Cenozoic are calculated using the geothermic method on the basis of the above thermal history results. The results show that the Liaohe depression has undergone the Cretaceous and Paleogene heat flow peaks, 81 and 83 mW/m2, respectively, corres- ponding to two strong rift movements. Accor- dingly, the depression has experienced two dif- ferent levels of thinning processes in the Creta- ceous and the Paleogene since the Mesozoic, and the ＂thermal＂ lithospheric thicknesses were 60 and 50 Ion, respectively. This may reveal that the depression has experienced two large-scale de- structions. The work may provide valuable geo- thermal evidence for initial revealing the time, process and stage of the lithospheric thinning in the Liaohe depression.

Petrology and tectonic significance of the early Mesozoic granulite xenoliths from the eastern Inner Mongolia, china

Granulite xenoliths are found in the early Mesozoic diorite intrusions from Chifeng and Ningcheng areas, eastern Inner Mongolia. The granulites are granoblastic and weakly gneissic with mineral assemblage of hypersthene, diopside, plagioclase and minor biotite, amphibole and ilmenite. Some samples contain the intergrowth composed of labradorite and vermicular hypersthene, and some coarse-grained plagioclases of andesine and labradorite composition occasionally develop bytownite rims with vermicular hypersthene, indicating a possible presence of garnet. Presence of blastogabbroic texture and hypersthene with diopside exsolution lamellae in some samples suggests that the protolith of the granulite is norite or gabbro. On the basis of metamorphic research and thermobaric calculation, the evolution of the granulite xenoliths is summarized into the following stages: (1) Isobaric cooling of underplated noritic or gabbroic magma in the lower crust led to the formation of probable garnet-bearing medium-high pressure granulite. (2) These higher pressure granulites were adiabatically uplifted to upper crust by dioritic magma and transformed to low pressure two-pyroxene granulite during an isothermal decompression. (3) The two-pyroxene granulite underwent retrograde metamorphism of different degrees during an isobaric cooling process as a result of crystallization and cooling of the dioritic magma. The pyroxenite-dominated cumulates and the medium-high pressure granulites may have rejuvenated the lower crust during the early Mesozoic.

The Linjiasandaogou gold deposit is located in the Qingchengzi Orefield,north china craton,china,and has not attracted many *** present geochronological,whole-rock geochemical,and Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic data to constrain the age and tectonic setting of the mineralization.U–Pb dating of zircon from pre-and post-ore dikes indicates the Linjiasandaogou Au deposit formed at ca.227–226 *** granite porphyry(ca.227 Ma)and quartz diorite porphyry(ca.228 Ma),which are slightly older than the mineralization,have(;Sr/;Sr)i-=0.7127–0.7162,εNd(t)=–13.7 to–17.0,andεHf(t)=–14.6 to–16.9,and display enrichment in light rare earth elements and large ion lithophile elements and depletion in high field strength *** lamprophyres(226 and225 Ma),which are slightly younger than the mineralization,have higher(;Sr/;Sr)i(0.7165–0.7216),negativeεNd(t)(–11.2 to–14.3)andεHf(t)(–15.6 to–18.6)values,and are enriched in light rare earth elements but depleted in high field strength elements(Nb and Ta).The geochemical characteristics of the granitoid and lamprophyres indicate a lower crustal and enriched mantle source,*** infer that the Linjiasandaogou Au deposit formed in a postcollisional tectonic setting,following the collision between the north china,Yangtze craton,and Central Asian Orogeny in Triassic.

Experimental studies of melt-peridotite reactions at 1–2 GPa and 1250–1400°C and their implications for transforming the nature of lithospheric mantle and for high-Mg signatures in adakitic rocks

Experiments of the melt-peridotite reaction at pressures of 1 and 2 GPa and temperatures of 1250–1400°C have been carried out to understand the nature of the peridotite xenoliths in the Mesozoic high-Mg diorites and basalts of the north china craton,and further to elucidate the processes in which the Mesozoic lithospheric mantle in this region was *** used Fuxin alkali basalt,Feixian alkali basalt,and Xu-Huai hornblende-garnet pyroxenite as starting materials for the reacting melts,and lherzolite xenoliths and synthesized harzburgite as starting materials for the lithospheric *** experimental results indicate that:(1)the reactions between basaltic melts and lherzolite and harzburgite at 1–2 GPa and 1300–1400°C tended to dissolve pyroxene and precipitate low-Mg#olivine(Mg#=83.6–89.3),forming sequences of dunite-lherzolite(D-L)and duniteharzburgite(D-H),respectively;(2)reactions between hornblende-garnet pyroxenite and lherzolite at 1 GPa and 1250°C formed a D-H sequence,whereas reactions at 2 GPa and 1350°C formed orthopyroxenite layers and lherzolite;and(3)the reaction between a partial melt of hornblende-garnet pyroxenite and harzburgite resulted in a layer of orthopyroxenite at the boundary of the pyroxenite and *** reacted melts have higher MgO abundances than the starting melts,demonstrating that the melt-peridotite reactions are responsible for the high-Mg#signatures of andesites or adakitic *** experimental results support the proposition that the abundant peridotite and pyroxenite xenoliths in western Shandong and the southern Taihang Mountains might have experienced multiple modifications in reaction to a variety of *** suggest that melt-peridotite reactions played important roles in transforming the nature of the Mesozoic lithospheric mantle in the region of the north china craton.

Differences in lithospheric structures between two sides of Taihang Mountain obtained from the Zhucheng-Yichuan deep seismic sounding profile

A 2-D model of lithospheric velocity structures in the southern part of the north china craton was obtained using data from the Zhucheng-Yichuan deep seismic sounding *** show that there are great differences in lithospheric structures between two sides of Taihang *** the eastern region,the lithosphere is thinner,with a thickness of about 70-80 km,while in the western region,the thickness is 85-120 *** is a jump of the lithospheric thickness across Taihang Mountain gravity anomaly belt with a magnitude of about 30 km.P wave velocities of the lithospheric mantle and lower crust are lower in the eastern region and higher in the western *** the eastern region,there are low velocity bodies in the middle and lower crust,while none were found in the western *** differences indicate that the Taihang Mountain gravity anomaly belt is a belt with a abrupt change of lithospheric thickness and lithological *** to the Pm waveform,it can be deduced that the Moho in the eastern region is not a sharp discontinuity,but a complex transitional *** a preliminary analysis,it is found that the geothermal mechanical-chemical erosion could be the main mechanism causing the thinning and destruction of the lithosphere beneath the eastern side of Taihang *** addition,subduction of the Pacific Plate is an important factor which changes the properties of the lithospheric mantle of the north china craton.

Geochemistry and Petrogenesis of Neoarchean Metamorphic Mafic Rocks in the Wutai Complex

Neoarchean metamorphic mafic rocks in the lower and the middle Wutai Complex mainly comprise metamorphic gabbros, amphibolites and chlorite schists. They can be subdivided into three groups according to chondrite normalized REE patterns. Rocks in Group #1 are characterized by nearly flat REE patterns （Lan/Ybn=0.86-1.3）, the lowest total REEs （29-52 ppm）, and weak negative to positive Eu anomalies （Eun/Eun=0.84-1.02）, nearly flat primitive mantle normalized patterns and strong negative Zr（Hf） anomalies. Their geochemical characteristics in REEs and trace elements are similar to those of ocean plateau tholeiite, which imply that this group of rocks can represent remnants of Archean oceanic crust derived from a mantle plume. Rocks in Group #2 are characterized by moderate total REEs （34-116 ppm）, LREE-enriched （Lan/Ybn=1.76-4.34） chondrite normalized REE patterns with weak Eu anomalies （Eun/Eun=0.76-1.16）, and negative Nb, Ta, Zr（Hf）, Ti anomalies in the primitive mantle normalized spider diagram. The REE and trace element characteristics indicate that they represent arc magmas originating from a sub-arc mantle wedge metasomatized by slab-derived fluids. Rocks in Group #3 are characterized by the highest total REEs （61-192 ppm）, the strongest LREEs enrichment （Lan/Ybn=7.12-16） with slightly negative Eu anomalies （Eun/Eun=0.81-0.95） in the chondrite normalized diagram. In the primitive mantle normalized diagram, these rocks are characterized by large negative anomalies in Nb, Ta, Ti, negative to no Zr anomalies. They represent arc magmas originating from a sub-arc mantle wedge enriched in slab-derived melts. The three groups of rocks imply that the formation of the Neoarchean Wutai Complex is related to mantle plumes and island-arc interaction.

Experimental Study on Gold Dissolution from Hosting Minerals of the Hadamengou Gold Deposit and the Implications

The Hadamengou gold deposit is located in western part of the northern margin of the north china craton. It is a hydrothermal deposit related to alkaline magmatism. Dissolution of Au, Fe from pyrite and iron oxide （including magnetite and hematite） individual minerals in the three main types of ore shows： in iron oxides （magnetite and hematite）, Au and Fe were dissolved simultaneously and their solubilities are positively correlated, which means Au is mainly chemical-bonded （lattice gold） and/or colloidal-adsorbed in iron oxides; while in pyrite, on the contrary, Au dissolution obviously lags behind Fe and the solubility of Au shows negative relationship with that of Fe, which indicates Au is mainly hosted as grains of elemental gold （or native gold） within pyrite. Previous studies revealed that the Hadamengou gold deposit is characterized by intensive K-feldspathization and holds high content of iron oxides occasionally replaced by sulfides, which was caused by oxidizing K-enriched alkaline fluids under a stretching geodynamic setting. These geological features, together with the high Au-content in iron oxides, comparable with that of the Olympic Dam deposit in South Australia, suggest that this deposit is the first example of iron oxide-type gold deposits in china.

Dunite Xenoliths and Olivine Xenocrysts in Gabbro from Taihang Mountains: Characteristics of Mesozoic Lithospheric Mantle in Central china

This article reports the petrography and mineral chemistry of dunite xenoliths and olivine xenocrysts entrained by the Early Cretaceous Xi＇anli （西安里） hornblende （Hb）-gahbros from the southern Taihang （太行） Mountains, with the aim of constraining the nature of the Mesozoic lithospheric mantle in Central china. Rounded dunite xenoliths are 1-3 cm3 in size and display porphyroelastic, tabular, and protogranular textures. Chromite with Cr#=60-89 is common in the xenoliths. Oilvine xenocrysts of 4-6 mm in size are also found in the Hb-gabbros. Orthopyroxene reaction rims are commonly observed around olivine xenocrysts or between dunite xenoliths and host rocks. The porphyroclastic olivines within dunite xenoliths and olivine xenoerysts have kink bands and Mg#=83-94. The Mg# of olivine cores and rims are 89-94 （average, 90） and 83-86 （average, 84.4）, respectively. The CaO contents of all olivines from the xenoliths and xenocrysts are less than 0.1 wt.%, suggesting a Hthospheric mantle origin. The Ca content （214 ppm-818 ppm） and Ti content （15 ppm-137 ppm） in the xenoliths and xenocrysts are similar to those of olivines from the dunite xenoliths, but are much higher than those of olivines from harzburgite and lherzolite xenoliths in the Fushan （符山） intrusion. This finding implies that the xenoliths and xenocrysts may have originated from harzburgites or lherzolites that were intensively modified by silica-rich melts. This result, combined with high Mg# （92-94） of olivine cores from the dunite xenoliths and xenocrysts, indicates that these ofivine xenocrysts and dunite xenoliths could represent the residue of ancient （Archean or Paleopro. terozoic） lithospheric mantle and might have experienced the same intensive modification by silica-rich melts as the host magma, resulting in enrichment in MgO and SiO2.

Provenance and paleogeography of Carboniferous-Permian strata in the Bayanhot Basin:Constraints from sedimentary records and detrital zircon geochronology

The Bayanhot Basin is a superimposed basin that experienced multiple-staged tectonic movements;it is in the eastern Alxa Block,adjacent to the north china craton(NCC)and the north Qilian Orogenic Belt(NQOB).There are well-developed Paleozoic-Cenozoic strata in this basin,and these provide a crucial window to a greater understanding of the amalgamation process and source-to-sink relationships between the Alxa Block and surrounding tectonic ***,due to intensive post-depositional modification,and lack of subsurface data,several fundamental issues-including the distribution and evolution of the depositional systems,provenance supplies and source-to-sink relationships during the Carboniferous-Permian remain unclear and thus hinder hydrocarbon exploration and limit the geological understanding of this *** integrated outcrop surveys,new drilling data,and detrital zircon dating,this study examines the paleogeographic distribution and evolution,and provenance characteristics of the Carboniferous-Permian strata in the Bayanhot *** results show that the Bayanhot Basin experienced a long-term depositional evolution process from transgression to retrogression during the Carboniferous-late *** transgression extent could reach the central basin in the early *** maximum regional transgression occurred in the early Permian and might connect the Qilian and north china seas with each ***,a gradual regression followed until the end of the *** northwestern NCC appeared as a paleo-uplift area and served as a sediments provenance area for the Alxa Block at that *** NCC,Bayanwula Mountain,and NQOB jointly served as major provenances during the *** was no ocean separation,nor was there an orogenic belt between the Alxa Block and the NCC that provided sediments for both sides during the *** accretion of the Alxa and north china blocks should have been completed before t

Glacial diamictite may provide important information on paleoenvironment and average composition of the upper continental crust(UCC).In this study,we report sedimentary facies,petrological and geochemical characteristics of Neoproterozoic diamictite from a profile of the Luoquan Formation on the southern margin of the north china Block(NCB).Upwards the sampling profile,lithostratigraphic strata vary from massive diamictite with poorly sorted carbonate gravels to laminated diamictite with small gravels of terrestrial detrital *** the profile,CaO-MgO-LOI-Sr values decrease with the increase of SiO_(2)-Al2O_(3)-K2O *** these petrological and geochemical variations indicate a change from lodgement till deposition in the proximal of ice sheet to ice-rafting deposition in glacial-marine environment with less dolomite to supply their *** with previous studies on diamictite from other outcrops on the NCB,the deposition of Luoquan diamictite reflects that the glaciation on the NCB vanished and the ice-rafting effect weakened with glacial transgression *** addition,significant co-variations of various elements with La and Al2O_(3)confirm the significant conservation of most analyzed elements during the sedimentary processes to produce diamictite.
