glow discharge in atmospheric pressure gases is of considerable interest for technological applications because it has some advantages over low pressure discharges [1,2]. Under the discharge current up to several amperes it is contracted at the cathode into a spot with the radius of the order of 10-3 m, i.e., it burns in the normal mode [3]. The cathode surface in the spot is heated by the flow of heat generated by the electric current in the discharge cathode sheath. An increase of the gas temperature near the cathode results in a local reduction of the gas density and in an increase of the spot radius. Calculations of gas heating in the atmospheric pressure glow discharge were fulfilled in [4-6], where heat transfer in the cathode body was not taken into account and it was supposed that the cathode surface temperature to be known, which restricts generality of the proposed models. In this work, the two-dimensional non-stationary heat conduction equation in the cylindrical cathode volume is analytically solved under presence of the glow discharge spot at its surface, and time dependence of the cathode surface temperature in the spot is calculated. A system of equations connecting the cathode temperature to the discharge cathode sheath parameters is formulated. Time dependences of the cathode spot radius and temperature for discharge in helium are obtained. Results of this work can be used under development of a closed model of the heat the transfer process in the discharge cathode sheath and in the cathode volume.

Two-Dimensional Numerical Simulation of the DC glow discharge in the normal Mode and with Einstein’s Relation of Electron Diffusivity

This paper presents an investigation of a DC glow discharge at low pressure in the normal mode and with Einstein＇s relation of electron diffusivity. Two-dimensional distributions in Cartesian geometry are presented in the stationary state, including electric potential, electron and ion densities, longitudinal and transverse electrics fields as well as electron temperature. Our results are compared with those obtained in existing literature. The model used in this work is based on the first three moments of Boltzmann＇s equation. They serve as the continuity equation, the momentum transfer and the energy equations. The set of equations for charged particles presented in monatomic argon gas are coupled in a self-consistent way with Poisson＇s equation. A parametric study varying the cathode voltage, gas pressure, and secondary electron emission coefficient predicts many of the well-known features of DC discharges.
