The paper reports the study of liquid-solid phase transition in sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS)aqueous solution by using acoustic nonlinearity parameter B/A.It was found that the point of inflexion occurred in the B/A-T curve just at the liquid-solid phase transition point of SDS aqueous solution.This result indicates that the nonlinearity parameter B/A can perfectly display the liquid.solid phase transition of SDS solution and may develop a new B/A method for determining the phase transition point of fluid.

Nonreciprocal light propagation plays an important role in modern optical systems,from photonic networks to integrated photonics. We propose a nonreciprocal system based on a resonance-frequency-tunable cavity and intensity-adaptive feedback control. Because the feedback-induced Kerr nonlinearity in the cavity is dependent on the incident direction of light,the system exhibits nonreciprocal transmission with a transmission contrast of 0.99 and an insertion loss of 1.5 dB. By utilizing intensity-adaptive feedback control,the operating intensity range of the nonreciprocal system is broadened to 20 dB,which relaxes the limitation of the operating intensity range for nonlinear nonreciprocal systems. Our protocol paves the way to realize high-performance nonreciprocal propagation in optical systems and can also be extended to microwave systems.

As artificial neural networks(ANNs)continue to make strides in wide-ranging and diverse fields of technology,the search for more efficient hardware implementations beyond conventional electronics is gaining traction.In particular,optical implementations potentially offer extraordinary gains in terms of speed and reduced energy consumption due to the intrinsic parallelism of free-space optics.At the same time,a physical nonlinearity—a crucial ingredient of an ANN—is not easy to realize in free-space optics,which restricts the potential of this platform.This problem is further exacerbated by the need to also perform the nonlinear activation in parallel for each data point to preserve the benefit of linear free-space optics.Here,we present a free-space optical ANN with diffraction-based linear weight summation and nonlinear activation enabled by the saturable absorption of thermal atoms.We demonstrate,via both simulation and experiment,image classification of handwritten digits using only a single layer and observed 6% improvement in classification accuracy due to the optical nonlinearity compared to a linear model.Our platform preserves the massive parallelism of free-space optics even with physical nonlinearity,and thus opens the way for novel designs and wider deployment of optical ANNs.

Highly confining waveguides(Δne>0.1)without a degraded nonlinear coefficient and low propagation losses have been fabricated in lithium niobate(LN)by a new process that we called high vacuum vapor-phase proton exchange(Hi Vac-VPE).Index contrast,index profile,nonlinearity,and crystallographic phases are carefully investigated.Original analysis of index profiles indicates that the waveguides contain sub-layers whose depths depend on the exchange durations.Propagation behavior,propagation losses,and second-harmonic generation response of Hi Vac-VPE channel waveguides are investigated at telecom wavelength.The results recommend Hi Vac-VPE as a very promising technique for fabricating efficient nonlinear photonic integrated circuits in LN crystals.

Kerr nonlinearity is an important resource for creating squeezing and entanglement in quantum technology.Here we propose a scheme for generating Kerr nonlinearity originated from an engineered non-Markovian environment,which is different from the previous efforts using nonlinear media or quantum systems with special energy structures.In the present work,the generation of Kerr nonlinearity depends on the system-environment interaction time,the energy spectrum of the environment,and the system-environment coupling strength,regardless of the environmental initial state.The scheme can be realized in systems originally containing no Kerr interaction,such as superconducting circuit systems,optomechanical systems,and cavity arrays connected by transmission lines.

We report a universal approach based on the surface plasmon resonances(SPRs) attained in filamentation in water doped with gold nanoparticles for enhancing the nonlinear refractive index. The filament-induced supercontinuum spectrum in water overlaps with SPRs of gold nanospheres, which further leads to a modification on the Kerr nonlinear refractive index. In our experiment, the measured nonlinear refractive index(n_2) in water doped with gold nanoparticles increases by six times, as compared with that in pure water. Such enhancement may be useful for filament-induced nonlinear applications with modest incident intensity.

To improve the accuracy of indirect tensile strength for a transversely isotropic rock in the Brazilian test, this study considered the three-dimensional (3D) deformation and the nonlinear stress–strain relationship. A parametric study of a numerical Brazilian test was performed for a general range of elastic constants, revealing that the 3D modeling evaluated the indirect tensile strength up to 40% higher than the plane stress modeling. For the actual Asan gneiss, the 3D model evaluated the indirect tensile strength up to 10% higher and slightly enhanced the accuracy of deformation estimation compared with the plane stress model. The nonlinearity in stress–strain curve of Asan gneiss under uniaxial compression was then considered, such that the evaluated indirect tensile strength was affected by up to 10% and its anisotropy agreed well with the physical intuition. The estimation of deformation was significantly enhanced. The further validation on the nonlinear model is expected as future research.

In this paper, a nonlinear robust adaptive controller is proposed for gear transmission servo system (GTS) containing a sandwiched deadzone due to improper gear meshing. The controller is robust to dynamic uncertainties and can compensate the effect caused by the sandwiched nonlinearity which is separated from the control input through drive compliance. The proposed design methodology does not require an adaptive inverse deadzone function and does not require the knowledge of its parameter and only the knowledge of upper bounds is required.
