IHEP, China is constructing a 100 MeV/100 kW electron Linac for NSC KIPT, Ukraine. This linac will be used as the driver of a neutron source based on a subcritical assembly. In 2012, the injector part of the accelerator was pre-installed as a testing facility in the experimental hall #2 of IHEP. The injector beam and key hardware testing results met the design goal. Recently, the injector testing facility was disassembled and all of the components for the whole accelerator have been shipped to Ukraine from China by the ocean shipping. The installation of the whole machine in KIPT will be started in June, 2013. The construction progress, the design and testing results of the injector beam and key hardware are presented.

After considering supernova shock effects, Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein effects, neutrino collective ef- fects, and Earth matter effects, the detection of supernova neutrinos at the China Spallation neutron source is studied and the expected numbers of different flavor supernova neutrinos observed through various reaction chan- nels are calculated with the neutrino energy spectra described by the Fermi-Dirac distribution and the ＂beta fit＂ distribution respectively. Furthermore, the numerical calculation method of supernova neutrino detection on Earth is applied to some other spallation neutron sources, and the total expected numbers of supernova neutrinos observed through different reactions channels are given.

ANL （Argonne National Laboratory） and the National Science Center ＂Kharkov Institute of Physics Technology＂（NSC KIPT, Kharkov, Ukraine） jointly propose to design and build a 100 MeV/100 kW linear accelerator which will be used to drive the neutron source subcritical assembly. The linac has ahnost finished assembly in KIPT by a team from the Institute of High Energy Physics （IHEP, Beijing, China）. The design and measurement result of the accelerating system of the linac will be described in this paper.

We present the design and optimization of a prompt T-ray neutron activation analysis （PGNAA） thermal neutron output setup based on Monte Carlo simulations using MCNP5 computer code. In these simulations, the moderator materials, reflective materials, and structure of the PCNAA 2526f neutrons of thermal neutron output setup are optimized. The simulation results reveal that the thin layer paraffin and the thick layer of heavy water moderating effect work best for the 252Cf neutron spectrum. Our new design shows a significantly improved per- formance of the thermal neutron flux and flux rate, that are increased by 3.02 times and 3.27 times, respectively, compared with the conventional neutron source design.

Relativistic electron beams driven by laser wakefield acceleration were utilized to produce ultrashort neutron sources.The experiment was carried out on the 38 fs,~0.5 J,800 nm Ti:Sapphire laser in the 10 TW UT 3 laser lab at University of Texas at Austin.The target gas was a high density pulsed gas jet composed of 90%He and 10%N 2.The laser pulse with a peak intensity of 1.5×10^(18) W/cm^(2) interacted with the target to create a cylindrical plasma channel of 60 mm radius(FWHM)and 1.5 mm length(FWHM).Electron beams of~80 pC with the Gaussian energy distribution centered at 37 MeV and a width of 30 MeV(FWHM)were produced via laser wakefield acceleration.neutron fluences of~2.4×10^(6) per shot with hundreds of ps temporal length were generated through bremsstrahlung and subsequent photoneutron reactions in a 26.6 mm thick tungsten converter.Results were compared with those of simulations using EPOCH and GEANT4,showing agreement in electron spectrum,neutron fluence,neutron angular distribution and conversion rate.

Purpose Afission chamber with two layers of 238Ufissile materials has been developed for the measurements of fast neutrons.Methods The developed fission chamber has been tested by 60Co gamma source and 252Cf neutron source.Results The results have indicated that it is very easy to cut off the gamma rays from the neutrons by using a discriminator,when the fission chamber works in the pulse mode.The detector works well,even if the static air is used as the filling gas.Conclusion To discuss the application of the detector,Monte Carlo simulations have been performed by considering four 238U-coated fission chambers located outside the spallation target for the fast neutron measurement from spallation reaction.The simulation results have indicated that the detector can be used to measure the fast neutron flux and neutron flux ratio of four fission chambers.Furthermore,a 238U-coated fission chamber can be used within a reactor for longer time,in comparison with a 235U-coated fission chamber.
