Vehicle emissions are a major source of urban air pollution, and therefore a real-time monitoring system can be very useful in analyzing such emission and consequently assisting the policy making process. In this work we discuss the principle and structure of three different types of remote sensing detectors, and also the key techniques to establish a networked remote sensing monitoring system. We finally conclude this paper with data analysis from some preliminary experiments.

End-to-end delay measurement has been an essential element in the deployment of real-time services in networked systems. Traditional methods of delay measurement based on time domain analysis, however, are not efficient as the network scale and the complexity increase. We propose a novel theoretical framework to analyze the end-to-end delay distributions of networked systems from the frequency domain. We use a signal flow graph to model the delay distribution of a networked system and prove that the end-to-end delay distribution is indeed the inverse Laplace transform of the transfer function of the signal flow graph. ~vo efficient methods, Cramer＇s rule-based method and the Mason gain rule-based method, are adopted to obtain the transfer function. By analyzing the time responses of the transfer function, we obtain the end-to-end delay distribution. Based on our framework, we propose an efficient method using the dominant poles of the transfer function to work out the bottleneck links of the network. Moreover, we use the framework to study the network protocol performance. Theoretical analysis and extensive evaluations show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Deconvolution Estimation of Systems with Packet Dropouts

This paper studies the optimal and suboptimal deconvolution problems over a network subject to random packet losses, which are modeled by an independent identically distributed Bernoulli process. By the projection formula, an optimal input white noise estimator is first presented with a stochastic Kalman filter. We show that this obtained deconvolution estimator is time-varying, stochastic, and it does not converge to a steady value. Then an alternative suboptimal input white-noise estimator with deterministic gains is developed under a new criteria. The estimator gain and its respective error covariance-matrix information are derived based on a new suboptimal state estimator. It can be shown that the suboptimal input white-noise estimator converges to a steady-state one under appropriate assumptions.

This paper studies the mean square stabilizability of linear discrete-time systems over a lossy digital communication *** packet losses process of the channel is modeled as a time-homogeneous binary Markov *** temporal correlations of the channel and stochastically time-varying data rate due to packet losses pose a significant challenge,which is solved by developing a randomly sampled system *** is shown that the number of additional bits to counter effects of the Markovian packet losses on stabilizability is exactly quantified by the magnitude of the unstable mode and the transition *** result contains existing results on data rate and packet dropout rate for stabilizability of linear systems as special *** and sufficient conditions on the minimum data rate problem for vector systems are also provided respectively and shown to be optimal for some special cases.
