Optimizations for High Performance network virtualization

The increasing requirements of intensive interoperaterbility among the distributed nodes desiderate the high performance network connections, owing to the substantial growth of cloud computing and datacenters. network I/O virtualization aggregates the network resource and separates it into manageable parts for particular servers or devices, which provides effective consolidation and elastic management with high agility, flexibility and scalability as well as reduced cost and cabling. However, both network I/O virtualization aggregation and the increasing network speed incur higher traffic density, which generates a heavy system stress for I/O data moving and I/O event processing. Consequently, many researchers have dedicated to enhancing the system performance and alleviating the system overhead for high performance networking virtualizatiou. This paper first elaborates the mainstreaming I/O virtualization methodologies, including device emulation, split-driver model and hardware assisted model. Then, the paper discusses and compares their specific advantages in addition to performance bottlenecks in practical utilities. This paper mainly focuses on the comprehensive survey of state- of-the-art approaches for performance optimizations and improvements as well as the portability management for network I/O virtualization. The approaches include various novel data delivery schemes, overhead mitigations for interrupt processing and adequate resource allocations for dynamic network states. Finally, we highlight the diversity of I/O virtualization besides the performance improvements in network virtualization infrastructure.

As a key technology to realize smart services of Internet of Things（IoT）, network virtualization technology can support the network diversification and ubiquity, and improve the utilization rate of network resources. This paper studies the service-ori- ented network virtualization architecture for loT services. Firstly the semantic description method for loT services is proposed, then the resource representation model and resource management model in the environment of network virtualization are presented. Based on the above models, the service-oriented virtual network architecture for loT is established. Finally, a smart campus system is designed and deployed based on the service-oriented virtual network architecture. Moreover, the proposed architecture and models are verified in experiments.

Topology-aware virtual network embedding based on closeness centrality

network virtualization aims to provide a way to overcome ossification of the Internet. However, making efficient use of substrate resources requires effective techniques for embedding virtual networks： mapping virtual nodes and virtual edges onto substrate networks. Previous research has presented several heuristic algorithms, which fail to consider that the attributes of the substrate topology and virtual net- works affect the embedding process. In this paper, for the first time, we introduce complex network centrality analysis into the virtual network embedding, and propose virtual network embedding algorithms based on closeness centrality. Due to considering of the attributes of nodes and edges in the topology, our studies are more reasonable than existing work. In addition, with the guidance of topology quantitative evalua- tion, the proposed network embedding approach largely improves the network utilization efficiency and decreases the embedding complexity. We also investigate our algorithms on real network topologies （e.g., AT＆T, DFN） and random network topologies. Experimental results demonstrate the usability and capability of the proposed approach.

A model for virtual network embedding across multiple infrastructure providers using genetic algorithm

network virtualization is an important aspect in cloud computing, where network is assumed to be consisting of infinite amount of nodes and links. The substrate network(physical network), has limited capacity and so virtual network embedding on the substrate network becomes a problem. Virtual network embedding is a computationally hard problem, considering various constraints on nodes and links. The proposed work applies Genetic Algorithm for the virtual network embedding problem for mapping multiple virtual network requests on infrastructure providers managing multiple substrate networks. Performance evaluation, through simulations,indicates that the proposed model preforms better for the performance metrics such as infrastructure provider revenue, acceptance ratio and node and link utilization in comparison to few other contemporary mapping models.

Virtual network embedding based on real-time topological attributes

As a great challenge of network virtualization, virtual network embedding/mapping is increasingly important. It aims to successfully and efficiently assign the nodes and links of a virtual network （VN） onto a shared substrate network. The problem has been proved to be NP-hard and some heuristic algorithms have been proposed. However, most of the algorithms use only the local information of a node, such as CPU capacity and bandwidth, to determine how to map a VN, without considering the top- ological attributes which may pose significant impact on the performance of the embedding. In this paper, a new embedding algorithm is proposed based on real-time topological attributes. The concept ofbetweenness centrality in graph theory is borrowed to sort the nodes of VNs, and the nodes of the substrate network are sorted according to the correlation properties between the former selected and unselected nodes. In this way, node mapping and link mapping can be well coupled. A simulator is built to evaluate the performance of the proposed virtual network embedding （VNE） algorithm. The results show that the new algorithm significantly increases the revenue/cost （R/C） ratio and acceptance ratio as well as reduces the runtime.

Collaborative network Security in Multi-Tenant Data Center for Cloud Computing

A data center is an infrastructure that supports Internet service. Cloud comput the face of the Internet service infrastructure, enabling even small organizations to quickly ng is rapidly changing build Web and mobile applications for millions of users by taking advantage of the scale and flexibility of shared physical infrastructures provided by cloud computing. In this scenario, multiple tenants save their data and applications in shared data centers, blurring the network boundaries between each tenant in the cloud. In addition, different tenants have different security requirements, while different security policies are necessary for different tenants. network virtualization is used to meet a diverse set of tenant-specific requirements with the underlying physical network enabling multi-tenant datacenters to automatically address a large and diverse set of tenants requirements. In this paper, we propose the system implementation of vCNSMS, a collaborative network security prototype system used n a multi-tenant data center. We demonstrate vCNSMS with a centralized collaborative scheme and deep packet nspection with an open source UTM system. A security level based protection policy is proposed for simplifying the security rule management for vCNSMS. Different security levels have different packet inspection schemes and are enforced with different security plugins. A smart packet verdict scheme is also integrated into vCNSMS for ntelligence flow processing to protect from possible network attacks inside a data center network

Topology awareness algorithm for virtual network mapping

network virtualization is recognized as an effective way to overcome the ossification of the Internet. However, the virtual network mapping problem (VNMP) is a critical challenge, focusing on how to map the virtual networks to the substrate network with efficient utilization of infrastructure resources. The problem can be divided into two phases: node mapping phase and link mapping phase. In the node mapping phase, the existing algorithms usually map those virtual nodes with a complete greedy strategy, without considering the topology among these virtual nodes, resulting in too long substrate paths (with multiple hops). Addressing this problem, we propose a topology awareness mapping algorithm, which considers the topology among these virtual nodes. In the link mapping phase, the new algorithm adopts the k-shortest path algorithm. Simulation results show that the new algorithm greatly increases the long-term average revenue, the acceptance ratio, and the long-term revenue-to-cost ratio (R/C).

network virtualization(NV) is considered as an enabling tool to remove the gradual ossification of current Internet. In the network virtualization environment, a set of heterogeneous virtual networks(VNs), isolated from each other, share the underlying resources of one or multiple substrate networks(SNs) according to the resource allocation strategy. This kind of resource allocation strategy is commonly known as so called Virtual network Embedding(VNE) algorithm in network virtualization. Owing to the common sense that VNE problem is NP-hard in nature, most of VNE algorithms proposed in the literature are heuristic. This paper surveys and analyzes a number of representative heuristic solutions in the literature. Apart from the analysis of representative heuristic solutions, a taxonomy of the heuristic solutions is also presented in the form of table. Future research directions of VNE, especially for the heuristics, are emphasized and highlighted at the end of this survey.
