Climate-driven variations in productivity reveal adaptive strategies in Iberian cork oak agroforestry systems

Background:Cork oak agroforestry systems(AFS)have been managed for centuries by humans to produce cork and other goods and services and have recently been recognised as an important reservoir for biodiversity improvement and ***,despite having recently been included as a natural habitat of community-wide interest within the EU Habitats Directive,these systems are in a critical situation of *** other factors,they are strongly threatened by climate change,the effects of which are also expected to be particularly severe in the Mediterranean *** this study,we aimed to evaluate the influence of climate variability by examining primary production indicators and also to analyse whether the geographical location may have a role in the incidence of the adverse effects of ***:Cork oak AFS were identified in the Forest Map of Spain and the Land use map of Portugal and categorized on the basis of canopy *** climate data from 2001 to 2020 were used to model relationships with climate predictors and proximity to the *** analysis was conducted to identify significant spatial clusters of high-and low-efficiency ***:The responses to the influence of climatic conditions differed among the various cork oak AFS categories,particularly in the forest category,which was less dependent on climate *** humidity and water availability were the main drivers of net primary production(NPP).Carbon use efficiency(CUE)was limited by relative humidity and spring temperature in open *** to the coast proved beneficial,especially in years with adverse weather conditions,but was not a limiting factor for survival of the ***,the results of the hotspot analysis supported the other findings,highlighting high-efficiency areas close to the coast and cold spots grouped in specific areas or dispersed ***:Canopy plays a key role in the influence of climatic conditions,particu

Simulation and Evaluation of Terrestrial Ecosystem NPP with M-SDGVM over Continental China

Using the regional terrestrial net primary production （NPP） from different observations and models over China, we validated the NPP simulations and explored the relationship between NPP and climate variation at interannual and decadal scales in the Modified Sheffield Dynamic Global Vegetation Model （M-SDGVM） during 1981–2000. M-SDGVM shows agreement with the NPP data from 743 sites under the Global primary production Data Initiative （GPPDI）. The spatial and the zonal averaged NPP of M-SDGVM agree well with different historic datasets and are closest to the IGBP NPP. Compared to the 1980s, NPP in the 1990s increases in most of China with a high degree of spatial heterogeneity. The multi-year mean NPP of forest types is reasonably modeled （above 500 g C m-2 yr-1 ） while that of C 3 path of photosynthesis （C 3 ） grasslands is underestimated. The NPP of 7 M-SDGVM main plant functional types （PFTs） increases and the increment of the broad-leaved deciduous forest is the most obvious （5.05 g C m-2 yr-1 ）. During the studied period, the annual NPP of M-SDGVM over China increases, with significant fluctuations, at an average rate of 0.0164 Gt C yr-1 . Regulated by annual temperature and precipitation, the interannual variation of the total NPP shows more significant correlation with temperature （relativity and probability are R= 0.61, P = 0.00403） than precipitation （R = 0.40, P = 0.08352）. CO 2 fertilization may play a key role in the increase of terrestrial ecosystem NPP over continental China, and CO 2 stimulation increases with CO 2 concentrations, and also with the climate variability of the 1980s and 1990s.

Improving Simulation of the Terrestrial Carbon Cycle of China in Version 4.5 of the Community Land Model Using a Revised V_(cmax) Scheme

The maximum rate of carboxylation （Vcax） is a key photosynthetic parameter for gross primary produc- tion （GPP） estimation in terrestrial biosphere models. A set of observation-based Vcax values, which take the ni- trogen limitation on photosynthetic rates into consideration, are used in version 4.5 of the Community Land Model （CLM4.5）. However, CLM4.5 with carbon-nitrogen （CN） biogeochemistry （CLM4.5-CN） still uses an inde- pendent decay coefficient for nitrogen after the photosyn- thesis calculation. This means that the nitrogen limitation on the carbon cycle is accounted for twice when CN bio- geochemistry is active. Therefore, to avoid this double nitrogen down-regulation in CLM4.5-CN, the original Vcmax scheme is revised with a new one that only accounts for the transition between Vcmax and its potential value （without nitrogen limitation）. Compared to flux tower- based observations, the new Vcmax scheme reduces the root-mean-square error （RMSE） in GPP for China's Mainland by 13.7 g C m-2 yr-1, with a larger decrease over humid areas （39.2 g C m 2 yr-1）. Moreover, net primary production and leaf area index are also improved, with reductions in RMSE by 0.8% and 11.5%, respectively.

The Tibetan Plateau(TP)and Arctic permafrost constitute two large reservoirs of organic carbon,but processes which control carbon accumulation within the surface soil layer of these areas would differ due to the interplay of climate,soil and vegetation ***,we synthesized currently available soil carbon data to show that mean organic carbon density in the topsoil(0-10 cm)in TP grassland(3.12±0.52 kg C m^(-2))is less than half of that in Arctic tundra(6.70±1.94 kg C m^(-2)).Such difference is primarily attributed to their difference in radiocarbon-inferred soil carbon turnover times(547 years for TP grassland versus 1609 years for Arctic tundra)rather than to their marginal difference in topsoil carbon *** findings highlight the importance of improving regional-specific soil carbon turnover and its controlling mechanisms across permafrost affected zones in ecosystem models to fully represent carbon-climate feedback.

Dynamic changes of habitats in China's typical national nature reserves on spatial and temporal scales

Until 2015,China had established 2740 nature reserves with a total area of 1.47million km^2,covering 14.8%of China’s terrestrial land *** on remote sensing inversion,ecological model simulation and spatial analysis methods,we analyzed the spatial and temporal variations of fractional vegetation coverage(FVC),net primary production(NPP),and human disturbance(HD)in habitats of typical national nature reserves(NNRs)during the first 15 years of the 21st century from 2000 to *** then the three indicators were compared between different NNR types and varied climate *** results showed that(1)the average 5-year FVC of NNRs increased from 36.3%to 37.1%,and it improved in all types of NNRs to some *** annual average FVC increased by 0.11%,0.84%,0.21%,0.09%,0.11%and 0.08%in NNRs of forest ecosystem,plain meadow,inland wetland,desert ecosystem,wild animal and wild plant,respectively.(2)The NPP annually increased by 2.06 g·m^(-2),1.23 g·m^(-2),0.28 g·m^(-2)and 0.4 g·m^(-2)in NNRs of plain meadow,inland wetland,desert ecosystem and wild animal,***,it decreased by 3.45 g·m^(-2)and2.35 g·m^(-2)in NNRs of forest ecosystem and wild plant respectively.(3)In the past 15 years,besides the slight decreases in the NNRs located at the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the south subtropical zone,HD enhanced in most of NNRs,especially HD in the warm temperate humid zone increased from 4.7%to 5.35%.
