A systematic review of the attractant-decoy and repellent- plant hypotheses: do plants with heterospecific neighbours escape herbivory?

Aims this systematic review highlights the relative support and implica-tions of the attractant-decoy and repellent-plant hypotheses,discuss-ing important linkages between these theories and the opportunity for novel integration into ecological and applied *** an extensive systematic review of the current literature on the attract-ant-decoy and repellent-plant hypotheses was done to describe the following attributes of the research to date:(i)the geographic extent(country and biome)of studies on this topic,(ii)the scope of experi-mental designs used,(iii)the level of support for these hypotheses with respect to the breadth of ecological niches tested,(iv)the level of support for these hypotheses with respect to the classes of herbi-vores examined and,lastly,(v)the ecological impact or purpose of these ***,we summarize important research gaps in the empirical literature on this topic and identify novel opportunities for critical linkages between ecological and applied *** Findingsa total of 37%of experiments testing these two associated hypotheses were done in North america,frequently in either temperate broadleaf(26%of studies)or taiga ecosystems(15%of studies).the majority of these studies involved experimental manipulations such as removing and transplanting vegetation and either tracked or excluded mammalian *** implications were primarily examined(59%of studies),but there were also implications described for agriculture and commercial forestry in 22%of *** repellent-plant hypothesis was well supported in many ecological systems,particularly for mammalian herbivores,but the attractant-decoy hypothesis has been less frequently tested,thereby representing an important research *** herbivores were under-represented in all categories except in applied contexts such as commercial forestry and *** is a clear need for studies to connect these two ecological hypotheses with the manageme

Blocking Response Surface Designs Incorporating Neigh-bour Effects

In this paper, blocking in response surface for fitting first order model incorporating neighbour effects has been investigated. The conditions for orthogonal estimation of the parameters of the model have been obtained. A method of constructing designs which ensures the constancy of variance of the parameter estimates of the model has also been given.

Enhancing Firefly Algorithm with Best Neighbor Guided Search Strategy

Firefly algorithm(FA)is a recently-proposed swarm intelligence *** has shown good performance in solving various optimization *** to the standard firefly algorithm and most of its variants,a firefly migrates to every other brighter firefly in each ***,this method leads to defects of oscillations of positions,which hampers the convergence to the *** address these problems and enhance the performance of FA,we propose a new firefly algorithm,which is called the Best Neighbor Firefly Algorithm(BNFA).It employs the best neighbor guided strategy,where each firefly is attracted to the best firefly among some randomly chosen neighbors,thus reducing the firefly oscillations in every attraction-induced migration stage,while increasing the probability of the guidance a new better ***,it selects neighbors randomly to prevent the firefly form being trapped into a local *** experiments are conducted to find out the optimal parameter *** verify the performance of BNFA,13 classical benchmark functions are *** show that BNFA outperforms the standard FA and other recently proposed modified FAs.

A Fast Fractal Image Compression Coding Method

Fast algorithms for reducing encoding complexity of fractal image coding have recently been an important research topic. Search of the best matched domain block is the most computation intensive part of the fractal encoding process. In this paper, a fast fractal approximation coding scheme implemented on a personal computer based on matching in range block's neighbours is *** results show that the proposed algorithm is very simple in implementation, fast in encoding time and high in compression ratio while PSNR is almost the same as compared with Barnsley's fractal block coding .

STUDY ON Fe ION DISTRIBUTION IN NATURAL CHROMITE BY MOSSBAUER TECHNIQUE

Mossbauer absorption spectra in a natural chromite from Shanxi province of China were measured, covering a temperature range from 12 K to 800 K. Each spectrum at low temperature can be fitted to three doublets: the first two are attributed to tetrahedral T-site Fe ions and the third one to octahedral M-site Fe ions. Such assignment was confirmed by the detailed analyses of the temperature dependent centre shift and other parameters. As a main result, our data strongly supported the ordered distribution with Fe2+ in T-site and Fe3+ in M-site for chromite studied. No evidence for electron hopping processes was detected.
