Feasibility study of miniature near-infrared spectrometer for the measurement of solar irradiance within Arctic snow-cover sea ice

The extremely low temperature,high humidity and limited power supply pose considerable challenges when using spectrometers within the Arctic sea *** feasibility of using a miniature low-power near-infrared spectrometer module to measure solar radiation in Arctic sea ice environments was investigated in this *** and integration time dependences of the spectrometer module were examined over the entire target operating range of–50°C to 30°C,well below the specified operating range of this *** these observations,a dark output prediction model was developed to represent dark output as a function of temperature and integration ***-induced biases in the saturation output and linear operating range of the spectrometer were also *** and integration time dependences of the signal output were *** signal output correction models were developed and compared,to convert the signal output at any temperature within the operating temperature range and integration time to that measured at the reference temperature and integration *** overall performance of the spectrometer was evaluated by integrating it into a refined fiber optic spectrometry system and measuring solar irradiance distribution in the ice cover with thickness of 1.85 m in the Arctic during the 9th Chinese National Arctic Research *** general shape of the measured solar irradiance above the snow surface agreed well with that measured by other commercial oceanographic *** measured optical properties of the sea ice were generally comparable to those of similar ice measured using other *** approach provides a general framework for assessing the feasibility of using spectrometers for applications in cold environments.

Estimation of multivariate detection limits of four quality parameters in licorice using MEMS–NIR spectrometry coupled with two sampling accessories

In this work,multivariate detection limits(MDL)estimator was obtained based on the microelectro-mechanical systems–near infrared(MEMS–NIR)technology coupled with two sampling accessories to assess the detection capability of four quality parameters(glycyrrhizic acid,liquiritin,liquiritigenin and isoliquiritin)in licorice from di®erent geographical regions.112 licorice samples were divided into two parts(calibration set and prediction set)using Kennard–Stone(KS)*** quality parameters were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)method according to Chinese pharmacopoeia and previous *** MEMS–NIR spectra were acquired from¯ber optic probe(FOP)and integrating sphere,then the partial least squares(PLS)model was obtained using the optimum processing *** indicators have been utilized to assess the PLS model *** assessment using chemometrics indicators is based on relative mean prediction error of all concentration levels,which indicated relatively low sensitivity for low-content analytes(below 1000 parts per million(ppm)).Therefore,MDL estimator was introduced with alpha error and beta error based on good prediction characteristic of low concentration *** result suggested that MEMS–NIR technology coupled with fiber optic probe(FOP)and integrating sphere was able to detect minor *** result further demonstrated that integrating sphere mode(i.e.,MDL0:05;0:05,0.22%)was more robust than FOP mode(i.e.,MDL0:05;0:05,0.48%).In conclusion,this research proposed that MDL method was helpful to determine the detection capabilities of low-content analytes using MEMS–NIR technology and successful to compare two sampling accessories.

Application of spectral technology in flame measurement

Spectral technology has become an important detection method due to its advantages such as non- intrusive measurement and on-line analysis. In this paper, two applications of spectral technology in thermal detection were proposed. First, a novel spectroscopic method based on Planck＇s law for measurement of emissivity was introduced. The emissivity, obtained by comparing the radiation intensity of the blackbody which had the same temperature as the flame with the detected intensity of the flames, could be used for on-line measurements and had a relatively higher upper tempera- ture limit. Then, a spectroscopic method for composition detection of blended fuels was proposed based on the emissivity measured. By comparing the spectra of blended fuels and single fuels, the ratio of single fuels of the blended fuel could be calculated. The measurement system proposed in this paper, which consists of a spectrometer and a computer, is very compact.
