Large-area nanopatterned graphene for ultrasensitive gas sensing

Chemical vapor deposited （CVD） graphene is nanopatterned using a spherical block copolymer etch mask. The use of spherical rather than cylindrical block copolymers allows homogeneous patterning of cm-scale areas without any substrate surface treatment. Raman spectroscopy was used to study the con- trolled generation of point defects in the graphene lattice with increasing etching time, confirming that alongside the nanomesh patterning, the nanopatterned CVD graphene presents a high defect density between the mesh holes. The nanopatterned samples showed sensitivities for NO2 of more than one order of magnitude higher than for non-patterned graphene. NO2 concentrations as low as 300 ppt were detected with an ultimate detection limit of tens of ppt. This is the smallest value reported so far for non-UV illuminated graphene chemiresistive NO2 gas sensors. The dramatic improvement in the gas sensitivity is believed to be due to the high adsorption site density, thanks to the combination of edge sites and point defect sites. This work opens the possibility of large area fabrication of nanopatterned graphene with extremely high densities of adsorption sites for sensing applications.

＜正＞ This study briefly reports a newly developed nanopatterning technology utilizing a so-called micro droplet jetting system, which can be used in various applications such as nanofabrication. Compared to the conventional methods, this technology has the advantages as follows: it can be manipulated easily and patterned freely as the user requires;furthermore, it shows high-reliability and high-stability with very low cost The typical specs of the micro droplet jetting system for fabricating nano-device show as follows: （1） nanoparticle size: 50-60 nm;（2） characteristic wavelength: 400-450 nm;（3） volume of droplet: 6 ppl;（4） size of pixel: 70 μm. In this article, the nanopatteming technology adopting the micro droplet jetting system has been demonstrated to be useful for nanopatteming the pixels which consist of nanoparticles, organic luminescent materials The micro emulsion in which the water-dispersed nanoparticles encapsulate the different electro-luminance materials has been adopted as the key components of the patterned layer which is obtained by means of the micro droplet jetting system on a flexible substrate. In addition, the micro topography and the luminescent property of the patterned surface have been characterized by using Scanning Electron Microscope （SEM） and fluorescence microscopy, respectively. Finally, the fluorescence of the patterned nanoparticles was observed.
