Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) has been modified by Ag, Ti, Cu and Si ion implanta-tion with a dose ranging from 1 × l016 to 2 x 1017 ions/cm2 using a metal vapor vacuum arc (MEVVA)source. The electrical properties of PET have been improved by metal ion implantation. The resistivityof implanted PET decreased obviously with an increase in ion dose. The results show that the conduc-tive behavior of a metal ion implanted sample is different from Si-implantation samples. In order to un-derstant the mechanism of electrical conduction, the structures of implanted layer were observed in de-tail by XRD and TEM. The nano carbon particles were dispersed in implanted PET. The nano metallicparticles were built up in metallic ion implanted layers with dose range from 1 × 1016 to 1 x 1017 ions/cm2. The nanometer metal net structure was formed in implanted layer when a dose of 2 x 1017ions/cm2 is reached. Anomalous fractal growths were observed. These surface structure changes revealedconducting mechanism evolution, lt is believed that the change would result in an improvement of theconductive properties. The conducting mechanism will be changed with increasing metal ion dose.

An ammonia leaching process was utilized to extract Co, Ni and Cu from oceanic polymetallic nodules, whereas an acid leaching process was utilized to extract Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Mn from cobalt-rich crusts. Both processes produced nanometer materials-ammonia leaching residue and acid leaching residue. A systematic study was conducted on the phase, composition and physicochemistry properties of these residues. The result shows that both residues contain a large amount of nanometer minerals. Ammonia leaching residue mainly consists of rhodochrosite, with the average grain diameter of 17.9 nm; whereas the acid leaching residue mainly consists of well-developed bassanite, with the average grain deameter of 9.5 nm. The bassanite also has a microporous structure, the volume of the pore space is 1.23×10-2 mL/g. Both the ammonia and acid leaching residues have a large specific surface area, and they display a strong adsorption capacity to saturate sodium chloride vapour, N2 and SO2. Both residues have high

nanometer Al_2O_3 is one of new types of functional materials with broad application and development prospects in the future. The basic principle and ways of nanometer Al_2O_3 fabricated using sol-gel technique were introduced, and the factors affecting nanometer Al_2O_3 fabricated using sol-gel method were analyzed. The progress in research on nanometer Al_2O_3 and the application fields of nanometer Al_2O_3 were reviewed. The existing problems and the problems prospect for nanometer Al_2O_3 were pointed out.

The nanometer\|sized perovskite La 0.85 Sr 0.15 MnO\-3 is synthesized by a sol\|gel method. And, through controlling the conditions of heat\|treatment, a series of polycrystalline perovskite with different grain sizes is obtained. The resistance measurements with changing temperatures show that with the increase in grain size the transport properties of this kind of granular perovskite, including the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect, systematically change from an interfacial effect\|controlled form to the crystal intrinsic type. Meanwhile, the magnetoresistance effect transforms from an interfacial tunneling GMR to the intrinsic colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). For the sample with a suitable grain size (～100 nm), the two magnetoresistance effects can be observed simultaneously. And the action of both magnetoresistances in common can make a "plain" on the curve of magnetoresistance versus temperature (MR\| T ); that is, the magnetoresistance effect of the granular perovskite does not change with temperature in a wide range.

Copper oxide nanometer powder was synthesized by one step solid state reaction of CuCl-2·2H-2O with NaOH at room temperature. The solid product CuO was characterized by X-ray diffraction and a transmission electron microscope. It has been found that the particles of prepared copper oxide are spherical with average diameter of 20 nm. This new method has the advantages of convenience and high yield compared with literature methods.

PTFE dispersion composites filled with nanometer ZnO were successfully prepared by controlling stirring speed and using ultrasonic mixture with no damage to PTFE dispersion. Properties of PTFE composites, such as wear rate, friction coefficient and thermal conductivity coefficient were tested respectively. Also, the grain size of nanometer filler in composites were observed by different methods, such as small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering particle size distribution analyzer (DLSPSDA). Results show that nanometer ZnO fillers can further improve properties of PTFE-based composite, and its properties varies with the content of the fillers.
