The flowering time of Arabidopsis is sensitive to climate variability, with lighting conditions being a major determinant of the flowering time. Long-days induce early flowering, while short-days induce late flowering or even no flowers. This study investigates the intrinsic mechanisms for Arabidopsis flowering in different lighting conditions using mutual information networks and logic networks. The structure parameters of the mutual information networks show that the average degree and the average core clearly distinguish these networks. A method is then given to find the key structural genes in the mutual information networks and the logic networks respectively. Ten genes are found to possibly promote flowering with three genes that may restrain flowering. The sensitivity of this method to find the genes that promote flowering is 80%, while the sensitivity of the method to find the genes that restrain flowering is 100%.

To evaluate the wear condition of machines accurately,oil spectrographic entropy,mutual information and ICA analysis methods based on information theory are presented. A full-scale diagnosis utilizing all channels of spectrographic analysis can be obtained. By measuring the complexity and correlativity,the characteristics of wear condition of machines can be shown clearly. The diagnostic quality is improved. The analysis processes of these monitoring methods are given through the explanation of examples. The availability of these methods is validated and further research fields are demonstrated.

Optical fiber communication networks play an important role in the global telecommunication network. However, nonlinear effects in the optical fiber and transceiver noise greatly limit the performance of fiber communication systems. In this paper, the product of mutual information(MI) and communication bandwidth is used as the metric of the achievable information rate(AIR). The MI loss caused by the transceiver is also considered in this work, and the bit-wise MI, generalized mutual information(GMI), is used to calculate the AIR. This loss is more significant in the use of higher-order modulation formats. The AIR analysis is carried out in the QPSK, 16QAM, 64QAM and 256QAM modulation formats for the communication systems with different communication bandwidths and transmission distances based on the enhanced Gaussian noise(EGN) model. The paper provides suggestions for the selection of the optimal modulation format in different transmission scenarios.

For many image classification tasks,color histogram is usually employed as an important"signature"to describe the color distribution of the image and infer the image ***,most traditional color histograms cannot achieve satisfactory results in many image classification *** order to improve the accuracy and reduce the computational complexity of the classification task,an information-based color feature representation is proposed in this *** mutual information between the feature and the class label is adopted to evaluate the discriminative power of the feature.A novel quantization scheme is presented,which removes the redundant color components and combines the adjacent components together to generate a new feature to maximize the discriminative *** iterative algorithm is performed to derive the color space quantization and color feature *** order to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed color representation,a specific image classification task,i.e.,differentiating the adult images from benign ones,is *** results show that our color feature achieves better classification performance and better efficiency compared with the traditional color histogram.

A MNCIE method for registration of ultrasound images

A new approach to the problem of registration of ultrasound images is presented, using a concept of Nonlinear Correlation information Entropy (NCIE) as the matching criterion. The proposed method applies NCIE to measure the correlation degree between the image intensities of corresponding voxel in the floating and reference images. Registration is achieved by adjustment of the relative position until NCIE between the images is maximized. However, unlike mutual information (MI), NCIE varies in the closed interval [0, 1], and around the extremum it varies sharply, which makes it possible that thresholds of NCIE can be used to boost the search for the registration transformation. Using this feature of NCIE, we combine the downhill simplex searching algorithm to register the ultrasound images. The simulations are conducted to testify the effectiveness and rapidity of the proposed registration method, in which the ultrasound floating images are aligned to the reference images with required registration accuracy. Moreover, the NCIE based method can overcome local minima problem by setting thresholds and can take care of the differences in contrast between the floating and reference images.

Chinese Term Extraction Based on PAT Tree

A new method of automatic Chinese term extraction is proposed based on Patricia （PAT） tree. mutual information is calculated based on prefix searching in PAT tree of domain corpus to estimate the internal associative strength between Chinese characters in a string. It can improve the speed of term candidate extraction largely compared with methods based on domain corpus directly. Common collocation suffix, prefix bank are constructed and term part of speech （POS） composing rules are summarized to improve the precision of term extraction. Experiment results show that the F-measure is 74.97%.

Considering that growing hierarchical self-organizing map(GHSOM) ignores the influence of individual component in sample vector analysis, and its accurate rate in detecting unknown network attacks is relatively lower, an improved GHSOM method combined with mutual information is proposed. After theoretical analysis, experiments are conducted to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by accurately clustering the input data. Based on different clusters, the complex relationship within the data can be revealed effectively.

As the basis of network of biology organism, the genetic network is concerned by many researchers. Current modeling methods to genetic network, especially the Boolean networks modeling method are analyzed. For modeling the genetic network, the information theory is proposed to mining the relations between elements in network. Through calculating the values of information entropy and mutual entropy in a case, the effectiveness of the method is verified.

A list sphere detector can use a smaller list than commonly believed by employing an appropriate soft output approximation method. Its effect on the ＂quality＂ of detector＇s soft output value is evaluated by measuring mutual information under ergodic channel. The result shows a length 40 list is adequate for a 4×4 16QAM MIMO system without system-level iteration. For the ergodic channel, the gain of a sphere detector over the linear MMSE detector is dependent on channel coding rate, which answers an important question when sphere detector should he used in system level design. All these theoretical results are then verified by Monte Carlo simulation.
