Introduction Lots of neuroscience studies have proved the positive effects of music training on brain functions and structures that link to cognitive abilities(Choi et al., 2021). Among them, an approach of the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging(RS-fMRI), which measures the low-frequency(～0.01–0.1 Hz) spontaneous neuronal activity in brain(Lv et al., 2008), has been widely employed to examine the effect of music training on brain functions. However, almost RS-fMRI studies used the region of interest(ROI)-based method, which can only provide information about functional interactions between specific brain regions, but this kind of analysis usually requires a priori ROI definition so the results strongly depend upon or are limited by ROI chosen(Smith et al., 2011;Tian et al., 2012). Because the human brain is organized as a form of network and the local architecture(e.g., short-range connections) is integrated with the large architecture(e.g., long-range connections) in order to support the high-level cognitive functions in brain(Li et al., 2018;Park & Friston, 2013), therefore, the current study would apply the whole-brain network functional connectivity(FC)(one network science skill) to investigate the brain elements and their interactions or relationships of complex systems between the individuals with and without music training. Methods From a larger sample size(N = 320), 56 participants(11 males and 45 females) had music training experience(e.g., keyword, piano, violin, accordion, etc.) and their mean starting training age was 10.67 ± 1.44 years(8～20 years old range). 264 participants(118 males and 146 females) had no musical training experience. All participants were right-handed and without any psychiatric or neurological disease. ＜正＞Previous studies have shown that music training could improve many cognitive functions,such as visuo-spatial cognition and verbal *** present study aims to explore neural correlates of verbal memory improvement by music *** used functional magnetic resonance imaging to compare brain activation between long-term music trained and na（i|¨）ve subjects under three conditions:concrete words encoding,concrete word retrieval and pure tone pitch judgment （baseline condition）.The music trained subjects recognized the words more accuracy and more quickly than the na（i|¨）ve subjects during a post recognition *** importantly,we found activation of the early visual cortex in the music group but not in the na（i|¨）ve group during the word retrieval ***-wise random effect and ROI analysis also revealed significant group difference in bilateral early visual cortex,with larger activation volume in the left hemisphere. These findings suggest that long-term music training can induce functional reorganization of the early visual cortex,which in turn may contribute to improvement of verbal memory capability.
