A comparison of animal color measurements using a commercially available digital color sensor and photograph analysis

An animal's pelage,feather,or skin color can serve a variety of functions,so it is important to have multiple standardized methods for measuring *** of the most common and reliable methods for measuring animal coloration is the use of standardized digital photographs of *** tech no logy in the form of a commercially available handheld digital color sensor could provide an alter native to photography-based animal color *** determine whether a digital color sensor could be used to measure animal coloration,we tested the ability of a digital color sensor to measure coloration of mammalian,avian,and lepidopteran museums *** compared results from the sensor to measurements taken using traditional photography *** study yielded significant differences between photography-based and digital color sensor measurements of brightness(light to dark)and colors along the green to red *** was no difference between photographs and the digital color sensor measurements for colors along the blue to yellow *** average difference in recorded color(AE)by the 2 methods was above the threshold at which humans can perceive a *** were sign讦icant correlations between the sensor and photographs for all measurements indicating that the sensor is an effective animal coloration measuring ***,the sensor's small aperture and narrow light spectrum range designed for human-vision limit its value for ecological *** discuss the conditions in which a digital color sensor can be an effective tool for measuring animal coloration in both laboratory settings and in the field.

Trachypithecus,which currently contains 20 species divided into four groups,is the most speciose and geographically dispersed genus among Asian *** several morphological and molecular studies,however,its evolutionary history and phylogeography remain poorly ***’s langur(Trachypithecus phayrei) is one of the most widespread members of the genus,but details on its actual distribution and intraspecific taxonomy are limited and ***,to elucidate the evolutionary history of Trachypithecus and to clarify the intraspecific taxonomy and distribution of ***,we sequenced 41 mitochondrial genomes from georeferenced fecal samples and museum specimens,including two *** analyses revealed a robustly supported phylogeny of Trachypithecus,suggesting that the *** group branched first,followed by the *** group,and the *** and *** groups most *** four species groups diverged from each other 4.5-3.1 million years ago(Ma),while speciation events within these groups occurred much more recently(1.6-0.3 Ma).Within ***,we found three clades that diverged 1.0-0.9 Ma,indicating the existence of three rather than two *** the phylogenetic species concept and based on genetic,morphological,and ecological differences,we elevate the *** subspecies to species level,describe a new species from central Myanmar,and refine the distribution of the three ***,our study highlights the importance of museum specimens and provides new insights not only into the evolutionary history of *** but the entire Trachypithecus genus as well.

Amphibians Testing Negative for Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau,China

A disease caused by the fungi Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis（Bd） and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans（Bsal） is responsible for recent worldwide declines and extinctions of amphibian *** Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau（QTP） is aglobal biodiversity hotspot,yet little is known about the prevalence of Bd and Bsal in this *** this study,we collected 336 non-invasive skin swabs from wild amphibians（including an exotic amphibian species） on the *** addition,to assess the historical prevalence of Bd and Bsal on the QTP,we collected 117 non-invasive skin swabs from museum-archived amphibian samples（from 1964-1982） originating from the *** results showed all samples to be negative for Bd and *** government should ban the potentially harmful introduction of non-native amphibian species to the QTP and educate the public about the impacts of releasing exotic amphibians from chytridinfected areas into native environments of the QTP.
